Am I the only one noticing that people are routinely bidding up the prices of these cigars well past what you would pay for them from a retailer or wholesaler? I have counted numerous occasions where individuals have bidded significantly higher amounts for gars than what you would pay, say on ** website. I'm talking $10.00 to $20.00 more for boxes of cigars. Occasionally I have seen reasonably good deals on closeouts where the quantities range from 100 to more of a given item. For the most part though, this does not seem like such a deal to me. Also, I object to the tactics of the owners of this site in advertising only 1 or 2 of a given item during a given auction, just to run the same quantity the next day or the next week in the hope of attracting the same suckers to outbid one another. As a protest, I think I will stop bidding for awhile. Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

have also wondered why someone would pay more for a box of cigars at an auction than they would from JR or anyone else for that matter. I would hope it's because they don't know about other sources. Think of the people out there who only know of **. Or the people who pay $150.00 or more for a humidor that was purchased at a Sam's Club for $39.00. Live and learn I guess.

you think its bad on this site , have you ever looked at what some people bid on cigars on yahoo auctions, and what some sellers put them up for ??, people are amazing how they bid on items without finding out what they can pick them up for elsewhere.......for example the montecristo milleniums cigars that come 12 in a nice box , people paying in excess of 120.00, i went on a site and payed 75 bucks for the same thing...

quit whining. i have gotten several excellent prices on this site. it's an auction, if you don't want to bid, then don't bid. i also enjoy seeing what's out there and trying some brands like indian tabac that i might not have otherwise tried. i have found the service to be quite good and thinks it's great, especially since amazon and others have stopped cigar auctions.

I think there is something psychological with some people when it comes to auctions, once they decide they want something they can't bear the thought of losing that particular auction, you can spot this early enough in an auction and it is foolish to get in a bidding war in this scenario. I always consider if an auction can be won, for a cigar I would truly enjoy for less than what I would pay at **** or the CI main catalog, then it is a job well done. The last good deal I got was on a box CAO L´Anniversaire CAMEROON Churchill.

Yes, you are 100% correct, I sit and watch auctions go far beyond the worth value in amazement. For an example, I recently seen a box of Cohiba's (yellow bands) go for $120! I went to phatash.com and seen you can get 2....TWO boxes for $99! I don't know if it is the competition factor or people not doing a little work to find the compeditors prices. Like I have stated before, I haven't won a bid here in a while. Auctions are supposed to be deals not retail pricing. Although I can't blame the owners of this site, it's the people that are driving the prices.

Thank God for the overbidders. They make it possible for this site to survive. I everyone only bid when the price ws great, we'de all be wondering what happened to that site and wasn't it grand. Live and let live. Let fools do what they do best. I have gotten some great buys on cigars I've never tried before. I suspect that getting a buy on a well know cigar wouldn't be as easy. ..........Russ

I'm with Russ: thank God for overbidders! I've won auctions here where I ALMOST felt guilty for the low $ I paid; I ALWAYS do the research. The dummies are where the site makes the $$ to survive. Doug: the next time you lose an auction cause some dopes inflated the price, be GLAD it gets posted again in a few days. Eventually the jerks drop off and you & I get the bargain!

I was able to beat the single box price at ***. They list theirs for $69, and I got a box here for $61. I did not want two boxes. Even that was heated bidding, with a $10 increase after the posted close of the auction time. Seems others were nursing their bids also. I hope they smoke OK, but mostly I just wanted some of those yellow bands because they look like the Cuban ones.

I've won a few five packs of good quality cigars for relatively low bids ($10-12), so I'm generally satisfied..However, I get a good chuckle at some of the high bids on some of the five packs and boxes that some people seem to really have to have..Unbelievable.

Hmmm, very suprised to here anything negative about ***. I have made at least a dozen orders with them throughout the last year and a half and have had nothing but great customer service, prompt shipping and great products. I know you can't order online or by email but they have always been easy to get in contact with by phone. They even have 5 star ratings on various cigar sites. Sounds like you had a very rare transaction and you might want to give them another crack, like here, they have some really good specials.

Could it be that those offering the item are bidding against theselves to drive the price up? What would they have to lose?

rjruch: The auctions run by CigarBid (Cigars International): if they bid themselves they MAY up the price, but they also may lose the sale! Only they know if this really happens, but if so why don't they always do it? I've gotten some very expensive Davidoffs and AVO's at 1/2 the price of ANY web site (believe me, I check); why didn't they jump in and bid up to prevent that?

On the ridiculous amounts payed for some of those 5 packs: go into a finer tobacconist and try to get a like 5 pack from them for less. What happens if you live in PoDunk Wyoming?? This is easier than a 5 hour drive to Cheyenne or Denver.

my question is why do you care how much people are willing to pay for things? I mean its up to them if they want to pay outrageous prices for stuff. You don't want to do it, well that's fine, but if someone else wants to do it - it is up to them. Making fun or berating people for doing it isn't going to stop them, so discussing it seems to me like a moot point, when there is so much more entertaining and productive things to talk about :-)

I've never seen so many edited emails!!!

People!!! Read the rules... you can't reference competitors or their websites.

On a lighter note... how Cbid runs this site is their business.. I have the choice of being here and doing business with them or not. I've seen a lot of brands I enjoy getting bid up higher and higher... but that's the nature of economics.

Liz, it is a dead horse that has always been beaten....cello on/off, etc.

The beef is that people are taking away the opportunity to get good deals by blowing up highly sought after items.......I'd love to snag a bargain DC 5'er, but somebody always goes ape-sh&t and bids up to $50+.

see there you go Sonny, if all else fails you have very generous BOTL on these boards that can come through for you - even if it is just for a few sticks of something that you are trying to get your hands on :-) trust me I know about bidding wars since before finding this site Clive was doing auctions and such at the big E site and we would see bidding going nuts there too - but there's nothing you can really do about it - just give it a shot and when it goes above what you can pay shrug it off - at least on this site there still is a chance of getting a few sticks of the desired gar :-)

I have probably bought over 2000 cigars at cigarbid over the years and my average is probably 50-60 percent off retail on average and much less on some of my favorites like Indian Tabac or Puros Indios. Certain cigars get "bid up" and I don't win them...so I bid on them next time. Prices here in the Atlanta area are rather high and having the cigars delivered every Tuesday to my office is quick and easy. I have had one problem in probably 100 deliverys and it was resolved quickly. I sometimes wish they carried certain other products, but it is an auction site...

The whole point of an auction is to get the highest price possible for an item on a given day. Many do pay well over retail! Yet I never have. How do I explain it? Discipline!! I am thrilled to have stumbled onto C-bid!

I suspect it's mostly new guys who do the over-bidding--certainly nobody who reads the forums with any regularity. I always check CI and a handful of other sites so I know when to quit. Whatever the item, it'll be around again.

I see this too, and just dont understand either. I think some people just have to win the bid no matter what. If everyone had some self discipline, and we could say 'self govern' ourselves, we would save big bucks. I DO though get some good buys, but often have to worry about my original bid. Its a topsy turvey curve most of the time.

I do believe that the Diceman may be a shill. Possibly for the aforementioned site. I have noticed his only posts have been to complain. I know that many online sites have lost buisness, to cbid, over the past couple of years. I know of several sites, which I visit, but don't buy from, because I can beat their prices here. When a bid goes over what I am willing to pay, I look at something else. The same smokes will be offered again, probably soon. I keep CIs' site open for reference, as well as other sites. I can always beat the aforementioned site, HERE, and Usually at CI.

Saying that someone is greedy for bidding you out of something is greedy in itself.

I like capitalism.

Some people may "overbid" on things like DC because they can't get them, and want them, and can afford it.

Again, I like capitalism.

Don't assume that your bid was lost to someone that wanted the sticks just like you, you may be bidding against a doctor, who spent .8 seconds pondering that extra 9 bucks. Maybe it is someone who already has 400 bucks in that week and is combining shipping.

Oh, and if you disagree with me, send me your snailer, and the next time I want to bid on something, I'll let you know, and kindly ask you to stay away.

And for the record, I am not your nemesis, just my observations.

LOL@Rob,
Yep I should, it's rain mixed with sleet here. I am enjoying it. Sitting in my livingroom, warm and dry, and smoking a Torano Nic selection CarlosI. Savoring a glass of rum. Thanks for turning me on to Dominican rum. By the way, I did a board search for Diceman. Hell he evan put down Torano Tributes, and probably has never smoked one. LOL I haven't either, but in no way would I put them down before trying them. Actually I can't think of any Torano, that I have had, that wasn't a pleasent experience.
