Food to Avoid Before Smoking

Went to a ballgame with my son at Dodger Stadium, and ate a bag-full of sunflower seeds. We decided to herf in the parking lot after the game to let some of the traffic flow out. I had an LFD Double Ligero, one of my go-tos. The salt from the sunflower seeds must've burned my taste buds or affected my palate because the cigar tasted and felt hot and harsh.

Any other foods to avoid before ruining a good cigar?

Umm, is stout a food group?

I really like Samuel Smiths oatmeal stout from the UK.

Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout - Samuel Smith Old Brewery (Tadcaster)

I've noticed several times, any cigar I smoke with it sucks, and the stout doesn't taste as good either.

Something about the combination is not good.

FWIW, I drink other brands of stout often while smoking a cigar, and they are fine.

Just that brand for some reason.

For me I'd say anything bitter, sour, or citrus-like.

Ruined many a good cigar.

i had sushi right before a cigar, spicy tuna. The spicy from the sushi and the wasabi killed my palate, couldn't taste my cigar. Sucked!

Dead opossum roadkill enhances a Ghurka.

Most really spicy foods like salsa kill a cigar for me.

Hey Ken,

Must be YOU! Frying pan I've had a few SSOSs with different 'gars and always had a good experience. If you haven't already, try an Ayinger Celebrator - man, that's good chit! A tad pricey but if I could afford to drink it often, I would (...but of course, YMMV...).

Probably is.

I'll have to check out this Ayinger Celebrator, see if one of the local stores has it.

They have been getting in a lot of different product during recent years.

Available locally as we speak.

Will get some soon, going to have to try it.

I like German dark beers anyhow. Quit buying St Pauli Girl dark, and Becks dark when it became hard to find at my regular spots, and/or seemed to be getting old.

The local Total Wine has Celebrator.

Same for me. Love the sammie oatmeal with a cigar and the celebrator is great with anything... although I haven't tried it with corn flakes

One of my favorite beers. Had one with an L40 tonight. I think you just have to grab a Full cigar or the Sammy will overpower it. I wouldn't smoke a RyJ or HdM with one.

I usually have a PB&J if I light one up on an empty stomach, seeing as I am still a n00b I need to be careful with the nic rush. Be careful with chili, some chilies are too spicy or have too many beans, and will either ruin the palate or come back at your later when you are smoking.
I did have an 1876 reserve paired with a vitamin water Power-C - Dragonfruit the other day (Manly, I know BigGrin). And it was an awesome combo, like smoking a blueberry pie LOL. When doing mixed drinks with coke, try using sugar sweetened coke (Mexican coke) instead of the normal corns syrup kind. I will be trying a nice mojito with a good cigar this weekend if I can swing it.
As far as food to avoid, my rule is anything that tastes bad if you burp it up. I usually do the sunflower seeds after I smoke though - gives my mouth something to do, and I like the saltiness.

I would suggest that you avoid eating anything that leaves an aftertaste. For me, that would include Mexican, Italian, and oriental (except Japanese, which has no aftertaste if you eat it properly).

Picked up a 4 pack of Ayinger Celebrator and had one when I smoked this evening.

it was pretty darn good.

In all honesty, I prefer the Green Flash brewing company Double stout, I have been drinking lately.

http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/2743/41626

Right up there with the best stout I have ever had.

the Ayinger was quite good, and I lean heavily toward German dark beers.

Even so, that green flash stuff is really good. And, about a buck a bottle cheaper.

My beer drinking is on a level with my cigar smoking. I have cut back so much, that if I go higher dollar it's no big deal on a weekly basis.

Having another one out of the 4 pack now while smoking.

Really nice.

The first one did get a head on it, but not as much and had a slightly flat taste.

This is getting a nice head, and is noticeably smoother, with a more balanced yet complex flavor.

Not sure if I would start drinking ayinger instead of the green flash, but definitely the best german dark I have ever had. I will buy more. It will be a pleasant change.

FWIW, one really nice thing about german dark beers in terms of me personally - zero or almost zero farts.

YMMV, but really nice for me and those around me Bwahahahah

I go in the specialty stores and they are absolutely full of stuff I have never tried.

So, I'll have to see if I can pick up some Old Rasputin or Yeti.

Although, at the recommendation of my new health advisor, I'm cutting back the beer and shifting more towards wine.

My son and his wife have been going to this person for years, and have changed how/what they eat and drink - love how they are doing.

I've been following a large part of the regime for about six weeks and cannot believe how much better I am doing and how much better I feel. My wife is doing better also.

Cut back to one coffee each morning, still start each cigar with a beer and then switch to wine, not doing all of what was recommended but probably more than half.

the rest of that Ayinger Celebrator was really good.

Going to pick up more today, and see if they have old Rasputin or Yeti.

ooops, didn't try it. At those prices, I figured I would be in trouble if I really liked it.

Man, I have really developed a taste for that Ayinger Celebrator. It is quickly becoming my go-to beer.

Not drinking as much beer lately, but when I do it's like a let down if I don't grab an Ayinger.

Can't say I've ever really noticed this as an issue.

How soon after eating are we talking? 10 min? 30 min? 1 hr? 2hr? 6hr?
