Retrohaling . . .

Ok... so tonight I tried some retrohaling.

I first lit up a Tatuaje Tattoo, and then a Don Lino, and then a Gurkha Centurian. -All- of these were excellent smokes!

I made an effort to do the retrohale and I seemed to succeed at it. But... even though each of these cigars had a different flavor profile... with the retrohale... they all had the exact same sweetish kinda taste in the retrohale through the nose.

At least, that was my experience.

Try it PRELIGHT.

A trick I try with newer smokers to help them understand why retrohaling works.

you storing your cigars with candy sticks?

My experience with retrohaling was that it took a while to get the hang of it and then a little while longer to really start picking up some of the more subtle tastes...

if you retrohale all of the smoke you bring in and it may overwhelm those taste buds and you may pick up nothing... maybe try retrohaling just some smoke off the front or back of the exhale...

just my experience... it's different for everyone... but one thing's for sure, once you get the hang of it you'll never stop... much more pleasant smoking experience imo...

I'm always really surprised when veteran cigar smokers don't retrohale as it seems to improve the experience tremendously... I was actually dumbfounded when I found out dpnewell never retrohaled... all those amazing cigars at magnificent prices and he only got to taste about half of what they had to offer...

I have no idea what makes the difference but there's pretty significant differences from one cigar to another. This is typically where I pick up the textures of the smoke, differences in spices, leather, etc. At first I recall it being so new it was hard to distinguish one sensation from another. Kinda like being a baby, laugh, cry, sleep. Life goes on they cry, whine, tantrum, complain, etc.

Once I learned to do it, ive not looked back. A world of flavor and texture I was missing.

I introduced my cousin to the retro. He got it toward the end of an H. Uppman Mag 50. Also, is it really possible to distinguish between chocolate and cocoa without retro? I know I didn't.

I've tried on several occasions and still don't realize any additional flavor/benefit to my smoking experience......having allergies may make my nose more sensitive and uncomfortable to this experiencefog

I had a very minor nose bleed the first two days from this. I had a carterization done inside one of my nostrils decades ago. I think that's what it was from. Anyhow, not a problem anymore. I live in VA (the flower basket) where allergies make people crazy for months at a time and I hardly ever have issues with it. Sorry for that. I can't say I'd honestly be smoking cigars if I couldn't retro. Cool? I also get to snorkel a pipe. Snorkel. Lol

I have tried retro-hailing numerous times, and can only seem to do it on Connecticut's. I feel like I am missing out on the full experience, but my nose just cannot handle it. I do believe that this is a result of some major sniffling in my youth. Angel

not sure if you meant sniffling or sniffing... if it was the latter, I did a lot of that too in my twenties... doesn't effect the retrohale for me... it may be that you're trying to do too much smoke... try just retrohaling a small amount after you've already let most of the smoke out of your mouth... if you can do it with connies, you should be able to do it with others with some practice... and ya, you definitely are missing out on the full experience...

I'm floored that people smoke cigars without retrohaling. It just seems like a waste of time and money to me. Of course you get some flavor without it, but you really have no idea about the full spectrum of flavors that are possible until you do it. I retrohale every single puff, and I'm never turning back. I'm also a big fan of breathing in through the nose while taking a puff -- that's opens things up as well.

Retrohaling is the only way to go. If you do not do it, you're wasting time w great cigars. If you do, GOD BLESS ya.

Clean your palate after each cigar if they all seem the same. That should not happen or your taste buds are wore out. LOL

And you smoked a great cigar if it was the first run followed by two horrible ones IMO. If the Tattoo was second run(most recent) those suc IMO and they made my palate horrible for the next cigar as I didn't finish the Tattoo.

Every cigar is different. You have a range. I retro most puffs. Some of the better sticks or avg but mild-med I can retro entire drags. Some are multiple. Some are one. Some are caught before the smoke actually exits my nose, it just opens the sinuses and full palate to the way back. Obsidian black right now. Minimal retro. Offensive and burning if I don't stay in control. Better cigars=low maintenance. Cheapos=watch out but can make it work

I retro but I can also pick up the difference in cocoa and chocolate without for the most part. Sometimes when the retro is stronger the I expect I try too much the first time and it burns it out for the most part. If this happens I wont try it again until close to the finish of the cigar. Its not everything to me in smoking a cigar. I get plenty of flavor from them otherwise just might pick something else up from retro once in awhile.

I don't consider my palate to be that great either I just concentrate on the smoke when I am enjoying a good one.

My fav vid on retrohaling. I can't imagine smoking without it. Retrohaling adds the second dimension to the smoking experience.

I don't understand how some of these "cigar reviewers" do so without retrohaling.

I usually only retro the last 1/4 or so of the smoke otherwise it's just too intense for me, but whenever I do retrohale, I seem to pick up more floral/sweet/pepper/cocoa that may be present

Last 1/4 makes it less intense? If there's anywhere for me to get overwhelmed that's where it'll be. I know we're all different but this just seems counterintuitive to the burning of tobacco. But hey, I'm a psych guy so I suppose I should appreciate counters

I loves me a good retrohale, all thanks to you guys for telling me I wasn't smoking right.

I like to open my mouth and raise my tongue up slightly into the smoke, then as most of the smoke has drifted out of my mouth I breath the last bit of it out through my nose slowly. Just like a quick puff will burn a cigar down and overheat it a quick retrohale just blasts the smoke out your nose.

Very cool little trick, really brings out the spice. Kind of like riding a bike, I don't even remember when I started retrohaling, and only recently realized it had a name, but I never thought about doing it pre-light. Thanks Jamie.Applause
