Nope. Just trying to get my platinum membership. I screwed up by shutting down CBID. Thought I'd suck up some. Thanks for being a good sport

A nude picture of me right now would make a woman go blind. I need to get back to the gym. I'm sure my membership would be bloody'ed if I postered myself up

Why is it that you MAC guys pay too much for A Computer and then have to pay to upgrade to keep it working. MACs suck.

well I typically don't buy new..........this imac was discontinued Oct 2005...
I bought from my local University surplus in early 2009 for $200, it came loaded with software....
I bumped the RAM to a whopping 1.5 gig for $20.....
been using it every day for over 5 years.......
only lately running into web site display issues more frequently.....

I'll just buy another one from the surplus depot, prolly a 2010ish Intel machine for a couple hundred bucks and be good for another 5 years......

I like Macs............been using them since 1985......lost track of how many I've owned............I know good places to buy high quality used macs......although on occasion I'll buy new (laptops for wife and daughter, imac for son)
I've used plenty of Windows machines, still have a pre-Lenovo buyout Thinkpad........................meh

Do you really think the life cycle of a Mac is less than that of a PC?

The thing with Apple is that it's expensive and built to stay that way. The longevity of any system depends on the quality of the components. I'm prejudiced against Macs because I had them at one place I worked and was always taking them in for power supply replacement.

No. Not even close. Plus you will need to figure in the additional prices for virus, spyware & malware protection into the price of an IBM. iMac..........not so much. (actually not even close)

Mac's will cost 2-3x as much for the same amount of relative computing power of a pc. The RAM a little more, but not 2-3x more. On the other hand, the peripheral components for a Mac or a pc system cost about the same. A Mac uses a RISC based processor. A PC uses a CISC based one. For rendering graphics and such the RISC processor is better. For complex computing. The CISC based chip is bettor. The average household user isn't going to notice much difference in the two as long as they are generationally the same or similar.

With that in mind, one may tend to think a Mac is bettor at gaming or watching movies due it's bettor rendering capabilities. Unfortunately that's not the case. In most of those applications, those graphics are rendered by the graphics processor of which most if not all or RISC based, not the CPU.

As far as how long they are good for, that's like comparing apples to oranges. PC's tend to become obsolete because they slow down. They usually slow down because of the amount of shovelware that gets loaded onto them. For reasons unknown, I always found that Mac users tended to not load as much crapola on their computers as pc users did. Absent such resource hogging processes the Mac's tended to have longer useful lives.

Having made a living for many many years working on computers, one of the best ways I found to get a 300% increase in speed on a pc is to fdisk the hard drive and reinstall the OS and only essential software. For years I built some extremely cheap pc's that would out perform most new pc's by using used components a generation or two older than what was in the newer pc's.

I was very careful when loading the software. I always deselected the 5 or so "helper" apps that would come bundled with something I actually needed. You would be amazed if you really knew what some of that crap really does.

All that being said, I've been away from the IT field for a few years. Some things have changed, some have not.

For the most part all that is free or extremely cheap.
