I stopped in tonight after work to watch the meteor showers. I first grabbed a Room 101 305 (I think)... It smoked ok and all... but I am a little spoiled by the MF 2014 TAA from last night. Anyway, not a -bad- cigar.

After that I grabbed another Gurkha Centurian. I've smoke a -LOT- of the Centurians. I like me some Centurians. But, tonight's Centurian... well, it smoked normally into the first third. But then it started to get a bit harder to draw. So, I started squishing around on it and discovered it was kinda hard right up next to the cherry. So, I squished it pretty good there and then had to let the jumping embers fly off. Then I saw that it was tunneling pretty bad. I squished it some more to break that up and the end of the cigar really splayed out... you haters would call it 'exploded'...

I kept at it and touched up the edges and it finally got back to almost normal in the second third. But it never recovered exactly, so I put it down right into the last third.

Moral of the story is... you can smoke a hundred good cigars of one type and then have -one- not perform up to expectations and then you can dismiss the whole line as no good.

Thanks for playing.... ;-)

The centurion didn't impress me. Not a bad cigar but nothing to chase. I don't recall any problems when I smoked one, tho the shape may make the burning inconsistent.

i used to smoke a lot of the Centurions. Thought it was a great cigar but haven't had any in a while, or at least
since they changed the blend.

I can honestly say I've smoked hundreds of Gurkhas and the whole "exploding" thing has never been a problem.
been enjoying cigars for almost 20 years and Gurkhas have not had anymore issues than any other manufacture.

The very worst burning cigar I've ever smoked on average was the Tatuaje Black tube for some reason but, I
didn't mind the burn issues because the flavor was always great.

I love to see what other "cigar experts" on here write about Gurkhas because it makes it easier to win bids on the
Gurkhas I like.............

well in my opinion gurkha's are cheap cigars rolled with inferior tobacco that's been artificially aged with flue curing... hence the completely muted flavors... smoke away... if you feel the quality of gurkha cigars are no different than other cigar brands, you should try some fuentes...

I was a huge gurkha fan at one point in time... smoked more than my share but now that I've experienced quality cigars that can be had for not much more in price, I've realized I would rather smoke "good cigars occasionally" rather than "bad cigars all the time"...

speaking of gurkha, anyone ever heard of the triad? it was considered a high end gurkha, and pretty costly... I mention it because I noticed in one of the CI magazines that they advertised having the Gurkha Triads for something like $4 each... there's no sign of them now, either here or the mothership... just wondering why that was... maybe I'll start a new thread and ping trish...

I have a ton of Fuentes and they are great cigars but i also have a ton of Gurkhas and most are really
good also. Not all Gurkhas are created equally, however.

You guys keep bashing Gurkha so the prices stay low. You certainly can't get any deals on Fuentes or Padron's
here, that's for sure!

I don't consider getting a gurkha for $2 a deal... especially after you factor in cbids cockamamie shipping structure...

858 maduro's are better than any gurkha sold here and can be had for around $4 each...

Tat Fausto's are better than any gurkha sold here and can regularly be had for around $4 each...

EP Carillo has some sticks that are easily better than the gurkha's sold here and they can be had for around the same price as the gurkhas...

I agree with the "not all gurkhas created equally" thing... it's true, but the question is why would you want to support a business that has the reputation that they do? they earned that rep by doing some truly despicable things - things they still do...

If you like Gurkhas buy them. You'll almost always get them at a good price. I'll continue buying cigars from companies that I respect. To each his own.

I was totally off... they are Tridents, not Triads... my bad... The difference is tridents are a couple bucks each and triads are like $50 each (not $50 and then marked down 97.3%, just $50)...

Apparently you have bought only the bad and mediocre Gurkhas on CBID. There are Gurkhas I would buy again, but I can't think of a Punch I want to buy.

when I bought Gurkhas here, I doubt there was one they had that I didn't try...

I used to defend gurkha as well... I didn't know what made a cigar good back then...

here's a challenge to you: pick your favorite cigar bid gurkha, cut it open and dissect it into it's whole leaf parts... then take some pics and post them for us to see... we can discuss all the stems and small leaf fragments you see...

Seriously, some you jokers act like little kids posting on social networking entertainment site, LOL

Gurkha was the gateway that got me into cigar smoking years ago. You don't like their business practices, no one is forcing you to buy their product. I would say that some opinions expressed here are WAY OVER THE TOP!

You can hate on Gurkha ALL DAY LONG, doesn't mean they don't make some EXCELLENT cigars, some of which have made the TOP 10 via Cigar Aficionado.

2013 Gurkha made the #9 spot on Cigar Aficionado with their 125th Anniversary XO

You CERTAINLY cannot take that away from Gurkha! Put that in your pipe and smoke it!

I disagree, actually more like the the little kid having a meltdown/tantrum all thru this post bashing Gurkha at every chance he can get and ranting about how Punch is superior to Gurkha, LOL

Funny thing is, I don't see ANY cigar Punch produces in the Top 25 for 2013. LOL!!!!

Your just a troll or have some serious issues to go to the extent you do to bash a company and the people who like their products.

Personally, I think Punch is a horrible cigar, but I am not going to bash people who like em'

I'm not bashing anybody but the gurkha company themselves... if you approve of the shady business practices of that company, buy away...

I will continue to call a spade a spade... gurkha is a bad company with far more inferior products than quality ones...

you've also cited CA's top 25 a couple of times... start a new thread and ask some cigar smokers - far more experienced than I - what they think of those ratings...

If you hate Gurkhas send the leftovers to my crew, they don't care. It is just a diversion to them. I have been thinking about getting a couple of bundles of RP seconds something mild to medium and cheap, or something, just in case...

I know once I smoke a good cigar I can never go back....some times ignorance is bliss, but at least it is cheap. I have really enjoyed my summer here sampling gars I have traded for. If I go sparingly I have enough for me for a while when we sail. I still have 2 40 ct travel humidors and 2 airtight shipping chest to fill for the crew. Hillbilly has the chest at one of his friends house waiting for me to pick them up they are sweet! I gifted a chest for the person storing them for us. You can put about 1000 gars in them out of their boxes. I am just a bit short, but there is still time.

Tick tock, my time is running out.

Hey man, I am not a cheerleader for anybody.

I actually hardly ever post on the forum, though I have been buying from CI for many years and been using Cigarbid for at least 5 years. I just happened to stumble on this thread after starting a topic about resurrecting the Castle Hall.

I will agree with you that not all of Gurkha's line up are the greatest. I have actually had a few where I couldn't get past the initial third. Some happen to be absolute favorites of mine.

As for the company, I can't say that I have in depth knowledge of their business practices. I know they are very clever marketers for sure but never heard them being shady in any way.

And before things escalate further, I wasn't here to start a flame war I just saw people going back and forth about Gurkha and thought it was funny. My apologies if I came across as otherwise.

There are a few factors being overlooked here:

The same Gurkhas you get on here are not the same you get at most B&M's. Gurkhas are affordable here and not so much at a B&M.
That being said, Gurkha did use to make some decent blends that I enjoyed and they still have a few new blends I enjoy. But Gurkha has placed more focus in marketing than the cigar itself. Most of the new blends arnt even true Gurkhas as they are being made by secondary factories such as the cellar reserve, ghost etc.

Bottom line, for the money, $2 online or $10 at your local, to me they are just like RP, over priced rolled bland cardboard with fancy bands.

Too many other good cigars that are better priced and consistent in quality.

I don't care enough to look into it, but I wonder what factories they use for their real blends? Not the rebanded ones.

Ive had a couple good ones, and they were really the first non ACIDs I enjoyed, which got me into cigars. But, on the other hand, I almost quit cigars early after trying to get through a couple samplers of Gurkha with every cigar blowing up or plugging. I was very frustrated and at the time didn't realize what I was doing wrong.

Thanks Kaizad, but this thread has been pretty mild compared to the countless others ripping on Gurkha and their BS marketing and crappy product. Would you still think you're driving an exotic sports car if the list price on your Yugo was $125k and sold new off the lot for $10k? A few years ago he bought a name of a company for pocket change and then acts like its his legendary company that goes back decades. The dozens and dozens of lines with catchy names and flashy packaging do nothing to help that inferior smoke you want to enjoy, after all that's what we're after, a good smoke, and the majority just aren't good anymore. Trim the catalog, improve the better lines and drop the ridiculous marketing strategies of $450/box but in the next 48 hours I'll send you a box for $39.95 and a Sham-Wow. Because after all it's not a $450 box of super premium sticks, it's a $39.95 box of yard 'gars that couldn't come close to a true premium or super premium stick in quality.

Lets say there are 5 labels out of his few dozen cigar line ups I really like, and we'll even say the rest are all garbage. If it's a good smoke, it's a good smoke.

No denying Gurkha has some lines people like.

Do you think Diamond Crown's and Zino Platinum's are worth it? Personally I don't think so, and I think both of those are quite bland. They may have great construction, great fillers, binder, and wrapper but in the end they are boring. I'll take a San Cristobal over them or a $2.00 Gurkha for that matter.
