Weren't these the same guys that were selling at a ridiculous price recently? Something like $300 a cigar or am I wrong? Just asking.

Yeah the cigar roller that rolls the $399.00 cigar is left handed and you can clearly tell in the pic above that those cigars were rolled by someone that is right handed. That makes all the difference.

Probably more in common between those cigars then the price of either suggests.

There was a time before I learned what a true premium cigar was, that I thought a Gurkha was a great cigar. Mostly because I saw that they were expensive. The ones I bought from my shpo for $10-15 didn't impress me even then, but I felt like I was just smoking their entry level stuff and it's probably better than others. Was going to buy a $20 one for my birthday and the shpo owner (acquaintance I've known for about 10 years) told me to spend that coin pretty much on anything else in the humidor, and if I didn't like it, he'd give me the $20 Gurkha. That was the day I learned of good, truly premium cigars.

Just to answer OP's question and to elaborate a bit more:

No, it's not the same cigar. The one you are referring to is "Gurkha His Majesty's Reserve." It's infused with Remy Martin Louis XIII Grande Champagne Cognac and sells between $300-$400 a pop.

Apparently, this is not the only Gurkha cigars infused with Louis XIII Cognac. A quick search shows Gurkha The Royal Reserve, around $25/pop, Gurkha Grand Reserve, around $10.50/pop.

A notch below is Gurkha Private Reserve, infused with XO Champagne cognac. I am sure you can find a few more different Gurkha cigars infused with XO Cognac.

Then there is the one you listed, Cognac infused. Not XO Cognac, just Cognac. This is probably the one Bill Clinton used.

Other than the Gurkha His Majesty's Reserve, most of the rest are usally 3 for $21 around here. Prices are up lately because of MAP and the lack of selection available.

I don't think anyone is trying to be wise. You'll find many cigar smokers fall into one of these categories: a) they have smoked a Gurkha and realize just how chitty they are regardless of what they are infused with; b) they feel proud to smoke a chitty cigar because they bought such an outstandingly chitty cigar at a huge discount; or c) they have tons of money and would rather spnd hundreds of dollars on a chitty cigar just because they can.

I am a cigar smoker and have smoked my fair share of Gurkha cigars. Some I like, some not so much. Never had one exploded yet. Split wrapper? yes, so do other brands.

My favorite Gurkha cigars were the old Ancient Warrior with the purple foot band and Master Select.

The only infused cigar I ever smoked was a Gurkha XO Cognac a friend gave me in a Reno casino. Let's just say that I prefer to have a cigar in one hand and a glass of XO Cognac in the other. :)

"It’s impossible to know precisely what’s behind this portal of secrets, but I’ll give you a few clues. First, I can tell you that this premium handmade treasure hails from Gurkha, purveyor of the some of the finest cigars on Earth. "
