Been smoking a pipe for 6 days now and really like it.

Mason jars all over the house and 47 tins of pipe baccy on the way. Just jump starting my cellar.

Back to the Pysch Doctor for more treatment now.

I bought some pipe baccy for a ggift but have never smoked a pipe. I was curious how far does say 2 oz or whatever a tin is go. Sorry for the thread jack but was interested cause seem like it could be a cheaper hobby then cigars.

Shaun it depends on the rate you smoke. Two bowls a day and I'll kill a tin in a week easy. But I don't smoke a lot of tin stuff regularly, mostly PS bulk stuff .

Yup. The tins I like range between $7-15/ea whereas the PS bulk is like $3/Oz (less if you buy more)

I noticed the tins were more when I was looking. Now how many different pipes does one need to get started generally.

2 or 3 to start and at least one of them should be a corncob. I had 3 dozen or so at one time and smoked about a pound of tobacco every month. Now if I smoke 3 pipes a week, thats an unusual high amount.

Depends on one's level of anal-retentivness.

I say one for Virginias/VaPurs one for English/Orientals so you avoid major ghosting issues. 2 Cobbs is best to start.

Not sure about owing me one, I appreciate it though. I guess I should probably let Zito have his thread back now right.

Pipes grow on you. I collected carved briars at first, then started carving myself, and then got a few Meerschaums. I had Calabashes, and all sorts of cool shapes. Rebuilding my collection this summer, i even got a Gandalf Churchwarden pipe. (insert pipe smoking smiley here)

Nice contemplative way to smoke, different kind of relaxing.
Haven't smoked any of my pipes in ages. Seriously don't need to start another compulsion. Even made my own blend in 03...canned and in mason jars in the basement every since. Chit. Now I want to dig out the pipes.

Way to jump start TimApplause The first week or two I was getting a bite on my tongue and wasn't sure if I was going to stay with a pipe but now I love it. Also thanks to Jamie for hooking me up with a nice sampler to get the ball rolling.
Just bought two more corn cobs. Since this is the only pipe I've used, question, how does other pipes differ from your experience? The Cobb is very light and when it gets to crusty I throw it away and start another.

I've smoked several kinds of pipes and the corn cobs seem to lend to bite free smoking, but they do burn out. I had a hickory pipe once too and it was my favorite until the bowl burned out. In the past couple of decades I've been strictly a briar smoker and primarily smoked E.A. Carey pipes. I still have an old tobacco can somewhere with a few corncobs in it. The Carey pipes came as clsoe to eliminating the bite as corn cobs and do not require the maintenance time that other pipes do.

Chazbo, was looking at the cellar site I told you about and I tried to match what the majority of smokers were cellaring. Some of what I bought was to cellar and some to try now and I tried to purchase a very wide variety of blends to figure out what I really like and then I will cellar those. You can check the site to keep track of what I am buying.

I too have experienced the bite of which you speak and thought the same thing about stopping. I read some where to use Biotene which I put in the frig and used it after smoking a bowl and that feeling, kinda dry and sandpaper like has all but gone away. The experience is getting much better now.

I bought the MM 10 pack seconds which I used a couple right away, got a MM County Gentleman Bent which I like much better and easy to hold. I did get a Dr. Grabow Omega Bent to try a Briar and I like it also but only used it for 3 bowls so far, seems to smoke well and dry. I also got a Stanwell POTY 2012 for 79.00 which I have not used. I am too new so I did not want to mess it up. As of now I like the cobs and the CG is very nice and for the price, when I burn it out I will just get a new one.

I got some SPC Plum Pudding and MB Plumcake on the way with some CHF. Are you still at the same address?
