These good to go for a while? Or will they referment in a few months?

Two things are keeping me from jumping in the deep end. One, I don't have a Visa card, so all the sources I know of are out until I get one. (Think I'm gonna get a Cabelas Visa - buy CCs, earn points for ammo)

The other is that I don't have the patience to allow them to age properly. I really enjoy most of the CCs I've had, but 90% of them have years on em, and came from Kyle's humidor. I've had some downright awful CCs as well, assumed they were in their secondary fermentation. Maybe eventually I'll be willing to make the commitment of space and time, but I dont want to spend that kind of money for something I can't enjoy for a year or more. Or does the "sick period" not last that long?

Just like any other cigar, some Cubans are great and some are not, or as you put it, downright awful.

David, just thought I'd throw this out there but since we're close to each other, if you ever want to split a box let me know... would save on extra shipping too.

And I haven't tried it, but the PSD4 was recommended to me as well from dharbolt.

Upmann Half coronas are the best cc I have had rott. Honestly though they all seem to get better with age on them, have yet tried one that tasted like the so called sick period people reference just some I thought were too light for my palate. My favorites are JL #2s, and Mag 46 but the PSD4 is pretty good and Boli PC are nice also. Only smoked 1 cohiba so far and enjoyed it but tough to say how old it even was cause it was gifted to me.

Definitely a different profile then any NC I had and I am keeping less on hand now that I have found they are more of a once in awhile smoke for me then something I would go to often.

I don't think there is such a thing as a "sick" period for production CC's I think its more of a over humidification during storage at the warehouse and the time allotted on our end to get them back to the correct %.... now if we are talking custom roll cc's then thats a different story.

no.

.....or maybe I should say, probably not

problem is what is meant by 'sick'.

I take it to mean that period after rolling in which the cigar continues to ferment slightly and give off ammonia smell.
That smell is very common, but almost always gone less than a year after rolling.

If there's another meaning to 'sick', that has to do with storage, I'm not aware of it...nor do I apply it that way

I was saying i think there is confusion with the term (I agree with your definition btw) I dont think it is possible to get a "sick" box of cigars from regular production due to the aging time of the tobacco regardless of the box code... but I may be wrong. Custom rolls are a whole different animal and are shipped shortly after being rolled in most cases and have no real curing time so to speak. But Im just a noop new to this game so I could be completely off....

I read this not to long ago:
To truly and accurately judge a box of cigars as "sick" one would have to smoke every cigar in the box and conclude that each cigar has the same "defects."

Who the hell in their right mind..... So I was just saying some ppl blame bad taste of a certain singular cigar as being "sick" it may just be a bad cigar

That could be why I never had one that I thought was in the so called sick period cause I have thought they were all decent just some not for me. Ones I have found that are not for me but others seem to love are any Partagas and Rass. I feel they are good in their own style but are mild Imo for my likes.

Rass are too soft in flavor IMO but the Ramon Allones LCDH and the PSD4's have some of the best flavor and strength for my taste

this....however, I'm not a fan of the HdM's...but not because of their age

Add H Upmann Half Corona - its a good thing because when you go through a couple/few a week, its hard to get any age on them

I disagree somewhat with the PSD4 recommendations...or at least I caution that not all are great rott....but after you've tried some from a few different boxes/months you'll start to get a feel for them. I smoked a lot of these fresh for years, but I don't anymore.

'Sick period' for cigars is all subjective. Only way to tell if you like a fresh cigar is to smoke em'. If you get a box and they smoke well, then keep on smoking em'. If you hit one where they taste a bit off norm, put em away in the humi for another 6-12 months and then revisit.

Cuban cigars have been smoking much better fresh than they have inyears past. Don't have the explanation for that, but it's a general consensus across multiple forums I dabble in. Not all marcas, but many.

As for the patience and space comment you made Dan....I said the exact same thing when I started out. Didn't even really like cubans at all either. Most I'd tried I didn't particulary care for. I was accustomed to the power & pepper blast of the non-cubans. After upgrading my storage capacity to a wineador, and sourcing my own cubans instead of getting a single or two here and there, I can now load up 5-10 boxes plus multiple singles drawers and let the aging thing take care of itself. Until you're able to do something similar, my advice would be to stick to the sites like OLH, or box-splits/group buys with BOTL here until you figure out what it is exactly you like & then begin considering upgrading your storage. Non-cubans may just suit your palate better. All part of the journey, which takes FAR too much time & WAY too much $$ to eventually figure out.

I have to add the BBF to the list. Just got some (Apr '13 box date, IIRC) in Nov, and first one smoked very nicely. The rest are asleep.

Pretty rare to get CCs to you fast enough to still be in the sick period. Most 'new' stock I have seen has been at least 9 months old. Best fresh cc I had in the last year were Cuaba Salomons from '13. Other 2013/2014 boxes that have been good for me:

HdM Epi 2
SCdlH Puntas
Juan Lopez #2s
Punch Punch
H Upmann Mag 50s

All of them have been good when dry boxed, but I get the feeling all of them will improve some with time, especially the punch and Upmanns.

Kyle, I believe part of the reason fresher CCs are smoking better fresh is I think they're using more aged tobacco in the rolling process and not rushing shipments like they used to.

With the way prices are these days, threads like this are, unfortunately, for the vast majority of us, a thing of the past.

Hoping maybe prices will return to competitive with all the other cigars. I’m my opinion they almost have to. It’ll take a few years I’m guessing. But look at how many people just aren’t willing to buy Cubans now. I’m not buying. Several people just on forums aren’t. If Cuba wants to move product the price will reflect that in time

If it’s gonna take YEARS for CCs to come down in price then I’m afraid I won’t be buying any when that day dawns. Not talking

I really need to make a concerted effort to smoke down my CC stash. Not sure what I’m waiting for…. Brick wall

I haven't developed a strong desire to smoke CC's on a regular basis. They are more of an every once in awhile, change of pace smoke...maybe a few a month...

Their similar unique and robust flavor profiles affect my taste buds like Beemans gum....not saying that's what they taste like, but how they are different from non CC's in the way that Beemans is unique among other chewing gums...

I’ll be smoking my first CC on my birthday in March, thanks to Lee.

Im looking forward to it so much that I’m afraid I set my expectations higher than a cigar can realistically meet.

You should like it pretty well overall, especially since you run towards the mild/med end of things. Just don't expect an angelic chorus from the heavens or anything like that

"Just don't like it too much, they are more expensive than cocaine".

IIRC that was a line spoken by Sean Connery while smoking a Cohiba in The Hunt For Red October.
