Question about Gran Habano

I'm new to Cbid, I have been smoking Cigars off and on for about 15 years.

I Started with a lot of crap in the beginning, and lately tried some Gran Habanos that I like but when I read reviews they are so mixed from some who like them and others who get down right obnoxious about how much they hate them.

I have smoked some of the "premium Brands" and enjoyed some but for everyday I like many of the Gran Habanos I have had.

So I guess I wanted to know what people thought here.

They tend to have a barnyard taste that turns some people off. Alot.

Well yes they are better aged that is true. I guess I need to pick up some of the "better brands " again and do some comparison

this is regarding the GH 2002s............Used to buy mazos of 20 years ago....
decent cheapie yard gar,,,,,always a few turds in the bundle......sometimes the grassy thing Z and Opelmanta talk about......they are one-dimensional, but generally smooth

my tastes went up a few notches I suppose........I don't buy them anymore.....but there's also the "tweaner" factor for me, in that for 25 cents more per cigar, I can get a Bueso Genesis........so it became a no brainer.

There where pic posted of a GH 2002 cut open with all its wonders exposed. The pic was not flattering… short filler & scraps. Not enticing to smoke what ever the price may be. The following link offers the best pic. There have been worse examples of the cigars content.

Are you still eager to smoke one KOC??? If so, why?

Buy better cigars. 25¢ more for a Bueso Genesis isn't saying much for that cigar either IMHO. Anyone cut one open?

Would not a mess like that have a poor draw and fall apart while smoking?

I'm not sure one cigar taken apart is a good representation of the brand and the 10's of thousands made.

After a good sample of a number of them taken apart randomly then I would be more impressed, but the poster said it was a problem before taking it apart, it may have been a DUD. Think

They're a yard gar and not a very good one at that. Pungent wet moldy socks is the flavor that came to mind when I had a GH 2002, the azteca fuerte left a burning plastic smell in my garage. It's just a flavor that I'm not fond of and I say that because I love a good barnyard smelling maduro cigar.

Don't worry about other peoples reviews if you have them in your humidor and they're smoking well for you then that's all that really matters.

Oh and welcome to cbidHerfing

I've smoked a few GH's in my time and I find them a bit too strong for my tatse. However, if you like them strong and bold, they may be right up your alley. Give them a little time in the humi before smoking them.

Great thread.......that I vaguely remember reading before....so I check it out.....and look who the last poster in the thread was........................me!
But I never did follow through and smoke another one.........pretty sure I gifted them all to my mooching BIL.....who loved them by the way.
They used to be a smooth, one dimensional chocolate bomb for me........but a few out of each mazo needed to be tossed early due to that musty/grassy taste, or simply not burning right........I didn't care......cheapie yard gar........I smoked well over a 100 of these back in 2010 and 2011.

The Bueso Genesis Toros and Robs that I hoarded in 2012 and 2013 were great.
Just starting to smoke the ones I bought in early/mid 2014......still fantastic.
I'm happy to hear you don't like them.......spread the word!

If you stick to 3 Siglos (or whatever they're called nowadays) and #5 Corojo, you won't have a reason to complain about GH again. Veer far from that path at your own risk.

With one possible exception? Chazbo, is that VL anywhere near the VL from 9 or 10 years ago? I haven't tried the 'new' one. The old was incredible.

Instead of GH what would be a better value ( budget) Cigar?

No dice, DRFP. You need to earn your stripes like the rest of us. Three years of smoking ****. Or, there's two alternatives off the top of my head:
Ask Rah
Buy better cigars and forgo the initiation

Yeah, gotta say I bought a lot of the bundles and a few samplers and the better of the lots were from another Internet seller, some were so bad they fell apart right after lighting. I have learned a decent cigar costs its only a bargain if you know that brand otherwise 95% of the time WalMart may have a better cigar Anxious

As far as the unwrapping cigars, I took a look around the internet and how they wrap cigars and the filler, how can you know by a picture that its bad? Tobacco is a leaf and once dry it may just crumble and break a part like some of these pictures, Also many cigars claim to use "Blends" of tobacco, so would this not be putting different leaves into the rolling and at times would not the lengths of the leaves be different? I'm just curious how we know whats good and whats bad?

What about the "90 +" rating stuff?

What the heck is wrong with you?!
Are you getting old, slow, or both?
DRFP poses a rambling question regarding cigars, and it's painfully obvious that he wants you to ask him to go camping, so that he can "learn".

oh oh.....I know....let me get the ZRX camping bible that JadeRose sent me for laughs:

Definitions, Section 12.2

Long filler = JadeRose
Short filler = Wheel
Mixed filler = JadeRose and Wheel.........with a Cuban

Well several posted "whats inside" a random single cigar, one had problems to begin with, and the belief, I guess, is that this proves the cigar is crap. I fully question this method of proof. I looked for one of the premium brands "taken apart" like this and no dice. I'm not sure taking the cigar apart proves much unless you can prove that the cigar is misrepresented in some way by the manufacture.

All the reviews I have seen are based on flavor, burn, smoke, draw, these things I care about the most, if its "Toothy" or "no veins" are not as important than the later.

You should care about this, if it's Toothy and you end up with no veins, you need to send her home and go see a doctor.

Why act so butt hurt that someone said gran habano was a piece of crap? Cigars like people only get to make one first impression. Only with a cigar that first impression will determine if a person smokes more of them or not.

A month or so ago I burned an aging room f55 quattro. I was so excited to get to smoke that cigar it had been resting since Valentine's Day and it sucked. The damn thing wouldn't stay lit at all which is my no. 1 gripe about whether I like a cigar or not. I really doubt if I drop the coin for another one after a bad first experience.

If you like them there's no reason to try to defend them or convince others.

Getting back to the OP's question. I have had several of the GH's from samplers and gifts and even bought a bunch 2002's for a canoe trip. Haven't purchased any recently but here is my take:

The 2002 are a good solid pool/yard/camping/fishing type of cigar. Nice flavor, doesn't last super long but burns well and, if it gets wet or have to toss it out early, no great loss. Spicy start that becomes more savory. They go cheap here sometimes and also specials on the various web sites with free shipping. They are good cigars to hand out to inexperienced smokers as well at parties, poker games and the like, since not too strong and burn easy. Also the cedar sleeve looks cool to people. Even with shipping, if patient (or if you can combine shipping with another order of things you are going to buy anyway), possible to get them for around $2 per stick.

I did not like the SLS's I got in some sampler a while back. No flavor and burned way uneven.

The Connecticut: mild and lots of smoke but mostly "meh" not a big deal.

The Azteca was horrible. Reminded me of the worst cigar I have ever had which was a watch-while-they-make-them fresh rolled disaster I bought in Mexico. Harsh, bitter, nasty!

Reading others comments, with GH's, consistency seems to be an issue. There is chance to get a stinker or two even with a bunch you usually like. Indeed, I have seen people say they like the SLS so maybe I just got unlucky.

So, for me, I will likely get a bundle of the 2002's for the next party I have where I know there will be a need to hand some out or when going on the lake or river trip. But, as others have mentioned, you CAN do a lot better for just a bit more. Keep in mind length of smokable burn is an issue especially if you are having a leisurely evening smoke. You can find cigars for only a little more that burn almost twice as long as the cheaper stick. It's the VALUE baby!

Even though it WILL get you a few klunkers, I would shell out for a couple different style samplers and take notes as to not only which ones you liked and didn't like but what types of tobacco, sizes, and styles you do or don't care for - all of that info is on the web sites. Then you can better look around here to see what is a bargain.

Good Luck

While some of the Fogs here will disagree, the new 5V Miami is rolled by GH, and it is a nice smoke. Not as good as the previous DPG version, but still good and can be had for cheap! About a month rest in the humi, and good to go

I've smoked a few GH and they are in the yard gar class, with the exception of the Azteca Fuerte which is one of the worst cigars I ever smoked.

Picked up a box of the new GH VL robbies reasonably cheap @ $2 per. While I doubt they'll be what the OR's were I'm hoping with a nice long nap they'll @ least be an enjoyable yard gar. They feel a bit light in the hand ( not densely packed ) but appears to have decent construction.
