Had a friend give me a tubador. Most have been sitting in the rapper since 09. Not sure how much attention he gave them. Took them out of the rappers and only one cracked. The rappers were deep yellowed and sticky. He had cedar wrappings in the bottom. They have been in long enough they are stuck to the bottom. No holes or cracks in the cigars. How do I tell if the cigars are still good? I'm hoping so as a lot of them are favorites.

Thanks
David

I would seal them up with 1 or 2 69% Bovida packs or some beads for a week or so to make sure they are or can get as close to properly re-humidified. Then I would try to smoke one and see if they are any good still.

Bought a collection from an estate sale a while back, well neglected cigars in the high end desktop humidor.

Threw in a few 65% Bovedas for a month and opened it up again. There wrte a few cigars that didn't have cracked wrapper leaf. Tried to smoke em but they were flavorless airballs.

Try to rehumidify them gently over a long while and see if they smoke. That's the only way you'll know.

Do not start out with that high of a moisture content the wrappers will swell and split. Start out with at max mid 50s then work your way up over several months this is going to take time not just a few weeks.

We have always called a piece of tubaware used as a humidor a tubador. I was wondering if there something physically I can look for in the tobacco for mold. The cigars wrappers are not hard or flaking. I'll throw a few humidity packets in and see what happens. With the wrappers being on for that long cause issues?

Thanks
David

Is tubaware the case you store the tuba in? You should take the cigars out and put them in the tuba immediately... with the granola...

If you mean the cellophane sleeves, no. Not a problem. If anything they might have helped the cigars sustain less damage over the years of neglect. Only smoking them will tell if they are worth anything or have lost all their flavor.

Mold is unlikely based on your description of how they have been stored. Mold is obvious, very easy to spot. It doesn't look any different on a cigar than mold on cheese, bread, a tomato, an orange rind etc. The colors can vary but the overall look is the same.

Tubas are excellent for preserving necessary humidity. The saliva dribbles through the mouthpiece and ferments inside and reacts with the brass creating a nano-steam engine effect. Do NOT close off the open end of the tuba for fear of creating an explosion. There was a tragic accident where two music students were killed in a car.....and the exact cause of the death was never determined. There was a tuba in the car. Suspicious.

funny, I didn't bat an eye at 'tubador'....sounds familiar even...maybe Pacman had tubadors?...I was more amused by the rappers....but OP corrected that by his second post, so I'll let that slide...like mikey, I'm curious what sort of cigars we're talking about...I'm going to bet that resuscitation is more trouble than its worth...and not likely to be satisfactory anyway

Depends on your seal and average outside humidity. They might be OK if not totally crispy. Do they crackle and disintegrate when you squeeze them? Its not much work to rehumidify. Try it.

Even if the cigars are not good, you now have a musical instrument you can learn to play.

I thought he was referring to some tubos initially, then figured maybe it was a cylindrical humidor like my brother in law's giant shotgun shell humidor.

Tubaware I think it's a jersey thing. The rest of the non Jersey English speaking country call it Tupperware.
