Tie rod guard

This weekend, I replaced the front leaf springs in my 69 IH truck. The guy that I got the springs from just happened to have a less common part: a factory tie rod guard. It bolted onto the front axle, and replaced the plate under the leaf spring on the drivers side.

Here it is installed on my truck (along with my new leaf springs).

After we beefed up the body mounts on the passenger side and replaced the springs, we were left with a truck that no longer leans to the front passenger corner, but rather is totally even.

"They don't make 'em like they used to..."

At times it's sad and other times it's a good thing.

I just replaced the rack and pinion and inner tie rod bushings on my car... step 1, pull engine. LOL well, it wasn't that bad, but it took 18 hours to complete the job. But in the end, I saved over $1100 compared to taking it to an independent garage or to a dealer (they quoted me $1450!!!).

Tie rods are easy on the truck. Unhook em, unscrew the ends, screw the new ones in, hook em back up, done.

Weird. I was just telling Thunder Gerbil the other day "people don't post enough pictures of tie rod guards here" then you post this.

calavera,

Same on my car for the outer ends, that's a half hour job... hardest part is getting the jack under my car. I need 3 jacks to get my car in the air because it sits too low! I use this cheap tiny jack that just barely fits under the nose and I can get it onto the sub-frame enough to get it a few inches up, which is just enough to get my two larger jacks under it and take it up the rest of the way and get the jack stands under the beastie.

Now the inner tie rods... that's a whole 'nuther story... gotta love Mopar.

#7 You can really make the job easier with a left-handed feeblefetzer wrench. Of course you also want to use ball bearings. It's all ball bearings now.

I don't know if I could even get a jack under my Honda. It is a Honda civic, and apparenetly 1 1/2 inches of ground clearance is all that is required these days. Luckily, if I need to do anything under it, I can just pick it up, flip it over and hold it!

I would think that before it was mounted you should have powder coated it or at least shot a can of black rust oleum on it

having it chromed would have been a bit much though

But it's been scientifically proven that chrome makes it go faster.

If I would have made it pretty, it would not have matched the rest of the truck. Plus, there is a certain amount of beauty to be found in the fine patina of an underbody component.

No bling on this truck.

What end do you mean? The other end of the axle or the upper part of the truck. Unfortuneately for everyone, I have a ton of pictures of my truck, and love to post them.

Which engine you have in your scout?

No offense intended.

I really enjoy the picture posts here. That being said,I prefer scantily clad Barely legal chicks.Or,a cool fishing photo of a scantily clad barely legal chick holding a barracuda. For me this would have been an ok photo,if there was a barely legal scantily clad chick with that hunk of metal on your old truck.

Just my opinion,

wheel....

You think that I would have been taking pictures if there was a barely legal scantily clad girl anywhere near my truck? I would have been far busier with something else.

Getting beat by my wife.

Considering where it is and what it does, I didn't feel that painting it was necessary. This truck is one that I am restoring, but it is also my hunting truck. It is going to stay utilitarian and functional.

J,

Sorry, I didn't get a chance to reply. I meant the top end. My XLC has the 345 engine. I bought it with the intension of restoring it, but that was before the kids and the house.

Someday...

Nice corn-binder detail shot. Years ago I had a 1965 Scout, a lot of fun crawling over rocks and up canyons out west.

WOW, a tie rod guard. Now that's something you don't see every day.

Btw, it looks like your rear main is leaking...

And you have an oil leak, too.

Actually, the only leak I had was the oil pressure sensor. It was defective. Replaced it, steamed the engine and everything was good.

If Toyotas had tie rod guards, the accelerators would not stick, and there would not have been a recall.

You got to respect a vehicle that has passive steering gear components that are 3/8" thick. The freakin engine block on new vehicles isn't 3/8" thick.

I really miss my old 1975 Chevy 4X4...a 3/4 ton with a 1 ton rear end. Leafs all the way around, 350, 650 Holley on an Offy 360 manifold, 4 speed, dual range transfer case. Automatic nothing. 8 miles per gallon. Linoleum carpet. 4 channel 8 track.
