...has GOT to be the Bad Frog...right? I've tried about 2 dozen or so, and the BF is the only one that I don't mind giving up on half way. I heard the Sportsman's Reserves are bad...are those Takomas worse than the BF's?

why why why after 1 bad frog would you try 23 more???

The worst I have had are the Lone Wolf - have not had a bad frog
have a 5 pack of the Sportsmen Reserve that I have not tried yet.

Tonester, you will be disappointed.
The Tacoma is a definate yard smoke. Much more tolerable than the sportsman and the lone wolf.

I have 80 Takoma's in the coolador. I think they are a decent smoke for 25 cents. smokes I found worse than Takoma:

Bad frog
Thomas Hinds Vintage
Ras Tefari
Fonseca
Wall street
Macanudo

I cut the Takoma even though it has a v-cut. I find it opens the draw and doesn't get harsh.

You see, there's the taste thing. I like the Sportsman's Reserve for a yard cigar. The taste grows on you as you smoke it. The Fonseca (mit the Zedar) isn't too bad, either. Everyone has a different set of tastes. IMHO

Dan is right about the Sportsman's Reserve. I've aged a few for over a year. They are fine smokes with time... :>)

I must agree with tonester666...

WHY!!!??? after 1 would you smoke 23 more???

Just looking at them kinda turns my stomach.

Spend more, smoke quality smokes, even if you have to buy fewer, its worth it.

I'm not familiar with the recent incarnation of Sportsman's Reserve, but early production by Nick Perdomo was an excellent cigar. I still have some of the earliest production. I think Jonathan Drew was just getting started when these were made. They certainly weren't pretty, but they were more than a yard 'gar.

I believe you meant to say, reincarnation ... but the 'Sportsman's Reserve' is no long in production, and the new line is called 'Outdoorsman's Reserve' ... and is made by Drew Estates alone, exclusively for CI ...

I'm not sure what you mean by, "early production by Nick Perdomo" ... as the 'Sportsman's Reserve' were always a joint effort between Nick and Drew. Sometimes they were advertised by Nick, other times as by Drew ... but they were one in the same.

And Drew had been around a long time before the two collaborated on the 'Sportsman's Reserve' line of cigars. The 1997 RTDA Show in Orlando began the formal birth of Drew Estate.”

As I often note in my various reviews, we each have different taste ... some of the cigars name above are not so bad, IMO ... some are worse than they're being described ... but the all time, worst cigar on CBid has absolutely, positively gotta be "Legion" ... these babies had the flavor profile and the draw you'd expect from a capped 7" length of 3/4" galvanized pipe ...

Here's an excerpt from a post I did last year on them, followed by two others that appeared on the board earlier in the year ... as you can readily see, there are 3 of us who agree ... the Legion is one serious dog rocket ...

-------------------------------------------------------
"Legion … the absolute worst cigar, bar none, I've ever tried ...

Got a box of these about a year ago ... lit one and kept hoping it'd smooth out part way through, but NOOOOO ... it got worse ... by the time I nubbed it (a robusto size nub) I was easily able to say it was by far the worst smoke I ever tried ...

Amazingly, I gave one to my neighbor and he liked it ... I thought he was either BSing me or being incredibly polite, but then a few weeks later, he actually asked if I had another ... difficult as it was to do, I did not burst into laughter, but said, "hey, let me take a look" ...

Through the spring, he raved about them so much, I got wondering if a few months in the humi had been some sort of magic-wand turn around on these guys ... I sent one as an "extra" in a trade I'd made and smoked one myself, anticipating something good had happened to them ... BBBZZZZZZZZZTTTTTTTTTT !!!!! W R O N G !!"
-------------------------------------------------------
"These (Legions) suck big time give them to the loudmouth that says he knows all about cigars and insists Backwoods are a quality smoke."
-------------------------------------------------------
"Legion Churchills which are so bad they prompted me to post a thread about them. New solution for that expense: Soak one or two overnight in a solution of witch hazel and distilled water (doesn't matter how much of each). Remove and discard cigars. Pour solution (through one toe of a worn panty hose) into an empty plastic spray bottle (recycled Windex will do). Apply light spray to delicate house, yard and vegetable plants as one of the most effective insect repellants ever made. Good gardening. Another solution: Gag gift for for your ex-wife's new boyfriend."
-------------------------------------------------------

The all-time worst cigar I've had from this esteemed company was the Evelio--it was not bad in the sense of having no taste, it was plain bad to the core with an overpowering ammonia taste...completely unsmokeable. This despite many years of aging, judging by the very yellow cello. To try and be fair, I did try a second one a few months later and after three puffs decided it was no different from the first. The rest went in the trash--they were so bad I wouldn't feel right giving them away even to a novice. Thankfully, such experiences have been very far and few between.

I find this interesting, but I think the worst I have had was when they did the closeout on the Hamilton House Coronas. They were horrible and had a cheap bordello perfume/bathroom spray smell. Not even a yard smoke.

It was my understanding that Nick Sr. produced these cigars while Jr. was still directing air traffic. Jon and Marvin got involved in the marketing, but really weren't into production. I think Jon may still have been in law school.

Question...I should have asked above.

The Cbid promo copy for Outdoorsman Reserve says this is a joint project of Drew Estate and Perdomo. Is this incorrect? Is Slim's post, above, correct that these are solely made by Drew Estate for CI/Cbid? If the Perdomos aren't involved in the manufacture, it would probably best for the ad copy to reflect that information. JMHO

Steve*R --- I just noticed that too ...

That description is the exact same one they used for the 'Sportsmand Reserve' ... I think someone just went in and changed the name ... but nothing else.

The description for the 'Outdoorsman's Reserve' is more correct over at Cigars International, except it is not entirely correct either.

They state:

"Not long ago, when I was visiting Drew Estate’s factory in Esteli, Nicaragua, I discovered an untouched load of these bundles. Without hesitation, I jumped all over it, and scooped up the whole shootin’ match. But lo and behold, the damn things sold out in record time. Thousands and thousands of bundles disappeared in a matter of days, no exaggeration. The moment we sold out, there was so much belly-aching from my customers that I knew this was a winner. So now it's made exclusively for CI customers by Drew Estate. Now that I’ve got my mits on them, you’re in luck because this is an unbeatable deal."

... when in fact, it was the 'Sportman Reserve' that they originally found ... and sold out ... the ones that were a joint effort between Nick and Drew.

The worst I have ever had from Cbid was a pack of those Chantillys I bought as a joke for someone. To this day I can't believe that I actually lit it and tried to smoke it.

The worst non-aromatic cigar that I tried was a five pack of the Rastafaris. NASTY!!!

Smoked 2 and tried to give the other 3 away at work. I often leave a few cigars that I'm tired of on the counter at work and they are usually gone in a couple of hours. The Rastafaris stayed for 3 days. LOL!

The worst cigar experience I had was a Perdomo The Cigar which tunnelled after a half inch.... I smoked a couple most of the 10 I bought and they both canoed badly. Gave one or two away and put the other 5 to rest and haven't touched them for 3 years. Maybe they are ok now....

Thomas Hinds Hondurans are often mentioned in the dog rocket category....I personally tolerate them as a lawn smoke and don't mind them at all.

The worst cigar at CBid is no doubt the Vega Fina Spanish Corona tubos.......I bought 160....smoked one...unraveled one to see what the hell was inside...and gave the other 158 away. Maybe the tubes were good for sumpin but the tobacco is crap.

The worst I tried here was one of the bundle's of Tamboril Cordova Torro's (another boom gar bust) that were on special three or four years ago. I attempted to smoke one and it tasted horrible. Couldn't even get a quarter of the way into it. In fact, I didn't even try another. Tried to pawn the rest off on the guys at work. Three coworkers turned them down before one finally wanted them and he never paid for them.

heh... well, i do have to say this: I LOVE TAKOMA!

*nod* it's true. rickamaven graciously sent me a fiver of these when he bombed the hell out of me along with some other sticks (like montegues, which i also think aren't too shabby).

anyway, i smoked a lone HDM machine-made isom i discovered that i botl had sent (thank you!), and it was the most amazing cigar that i wanted to cry when it was gone. not too long afterwards, i smoked a takoma, wondering about the rumors of ISOM tobacco in it. honest to goodness, the takoma was ALMOST as good as the HDM isom!!

now mine is far from being a palette that knows ISOM tobac when i taste it. that's my first and only ISOM that i've had. but i gotta say that the takoma was really not that far off from the HDM at all.

sooooo... when i got my allowance for feb, i bid on and won 2 fivers of these. i've shared 2 of the 5 i had (still awaiting comments) and smoke 3 of them, and each one has tasted very very good to me.

for what it's worth...

Tony, I am probably not one to ask about the taste of a Cuban cigar. I am not one that seeks out or will pay for Cubans. I've had quite a few, when on vacation and some gifts but I'm happy with too many "legal" brands. Not in my budget to pay Cuban prices either.

Anyway...I would have to say no, they do not taste like any of the Cuban's I've smoked. Milder, certianly not as strong not the same construction. They do have a decent flavor however. I would have sent you a few if I would have known you never tried one, but for the price here, give them a shot.

Any cigar with a description that starts off, "A casualty of the Cigar Boom..." is a doggie.
The worse I have ever tried was a Torcedor, with a picture of the sun smoking a cigar. Yuk!
Thanks to this board, I have never tried a Bad Frog.

I'd probably agree w/ TubeDoc most of the time that "
any cigar with a description that starts off, 'A casualty of the Cigar Boom...' is a doggie."
I have tried Torcedors & do NOT recommend them. However, I have a stash [lifetime supply?] of them & smoke them occasionally when there's call for a yard cigar. I may be delusional, but I think they [marginally] improve with age.

rickamaven sent me a fiver of takomas in the red package -- LOVED them. i hate that i've only got one left. :/ i bid on and won 2 packs, but they were the blue ones -- not NEARLY as good as the red packs. anyone know what the difference is?

p.s. if you have red packs of the takomas you'd like to get rid of, let me know (BBELTRISI at ec.rr.com). i'd be glad to trade you something for them!
