lately one of the biggest attacks by the scare mongers has been on genetically altered crops. Personally I feel this is the best thing to happen in agriculture ever, the potential is unlimited, the benefits equally so. So now I would like to see a genetically altered cigar, the best of the best, a cigar created from spliced genes of all the best qualities of tobacco plants. Think of it, no more plants lost to the blue mold, the weather conditions become insignificant, year after year, crops yielding the finest to offer, more plants per acre with no soil erosion, leaves that produce the most flavorful smoke imaginable, the possibilities are endless. And I dare anyone to tell me of any case where this has caused harm to any person anywhere.

I have a couple scares for you.
1) Corn syrup: The first product made by genetic engineering. Bacteria were manipulated to produce an enzyme that catalyzes increased sugar production from corn starches. The down fall..many people have allegic reactions to this super-concentrated product causing psychotic episodes. I know from experience
2) Didn't Taco Bell put some Genetically altered feed corn in their tortillas? That's a hurt I don't want to feel.
But seriously, what if super potent molds evolve to feast on the fruits of science? I guess it could be adios to Cuba. Later

You're probably right about the Taco Bell shells, they won't harm you when you eat them. The problem with genetically altered crops is two fold. First, no one knows for sure the consequences 20-30 years down the road. I think further testing is required and it should be closely regulated until it is done. I don't want you to think that I'm equating this to the tobacco issue, because I believe that the in depth studies regarding tobacco have been made and that the general public is completely aware of the risks. Personal choice drives the use of tobacco products and I think that's the way it should stay. The second reason for being wary of the genetically altered crops is that preliminary test have shown that some crops are capable of exuding the pesticide the plant is programmed to produce, contaminating the soil with the pesticide. Other crops are programmed to withstand stronger pesticides so that they can be sprayed with them and survive. Studies have to be done to control the effects of these pesticides being accumulated in the soil. So, even though that taco shell won't harm you when you eat it, who knows what it's capable of doing to all of us later on. Don't get me wrong, I think that genetically altered crops can work and will be a viable way farming, but we must be careful not to do irrevocable damage.

we must be reading completely different studies. The pesticides are produced by the plant naturally and have shown to have no ill effect on the soil, in fact quite the opposite, soil erosion is much less. Also this has been tested to death, I mean with all the scare mongers are anti technology terrorist buzzing around, many governmental bodies have their noses deep into the issue. You know though we have been altering plants and crops for a very long period already, it is simply science has found a much more efficient and natural way of doing it. Organic foods have been altered by radiation and which involves a much more drastic process. When one really reads the science and not the hype they should be astounded to wonder what all the hype is over. The benifits, especially to third world countries that have difficulties growing anything are very great.

I agree with you, when it comes to the enviroment there's people out there that would like nothing better than to scare the s**t out of the general public to get their way. I'm aware of their tactics because they're trying to close every single off-road trail in the US by scaring people in to beliving that jeep owners (of whom I'm one) must be heart-less monsters. They'll stop at nothing with little if any sience to back them up. On the other hand, I don't feel that we should just go willy-nilly and introduce new technology without assuring ourselves that the consequences will not out weigh the benifits.

Nature always seems to find a balance. We end up deciding if it is good or bad based on personal perception. I really do agree, despite the earlier post, and say roll the dice.

I don’t grow tobacco

IF they haven’t already hybridized tobacco I’d be shocked.

In short I’m suggesting this was already happening prior to this post in 2000.
However there’s just no actual way of creating the best of the best “ perfect plant”. It’s likely they do already have tobacco plants that will in theory yield the most. They have a separate plant that withstands mold better. I’m sure they even have plants specifically that taste the “best”. Each would taste different yet in different regions /soil/variables.

Hell I even think you could use raised beds to grow tobacco that would taste considerably like Cuban tobacco if grown in the correct region.
You’d need to amend the soil with the correct minerals etc. I’m pretty confident on this one.

I'd just like to point out that Taco Bell is one of the healthiest chain fast food options. Granted, that's along the lines of winning a beauty pageant for burn victims, but still

Most of the "domesticated" plants are genetically modified. Not in the sense of DNA or gene manipulation but through generations of selective breeding.

More drought tolerant, disease/pest resistant, longer shelf life, more compact and higher yield...
