Nomally I take the cigars out of the box and put them right into my humidor. The problem I have now that I have found cigarbid.com, is all my humidors are full. I keep getting cigars in the mail and want to try one. what I want to know is if I take the plastic seal off of the box, how long will they last being in the box and not in a humidor?

Can I add another question to this? What if you leave the seal on the box -- will the cigars last outside the humidor?

For this to work effectively the seal must be fed a strick diet of Herring and have a ball placed on it's nose when not being fed.

disaster strikes if you don't do something after 2 weeks. i thought they'd keep if i just kept them in the sealed box. no dice. so, i accidentally found these huge empty tupperware containers my wife was hiding for some reason. i can fit about 4 boxes in each plus a damp towel. given, they're not the most attractive humidor, but they seem to work just fine for about 2 months. i seem to overhumidify if i leave them in much longer than that. good short term solution.

The best solution to a full humidor is to smoke more cigars faster. I have a second solution, but I know no one can do it, stop buying cigars when you humidor gets full.............Russ

One suggestion.....do like me, buy a larger humidor and keep up this process until you 1) go broke or 2) your wife beats the hell out of ya and you are sleeping in the doghouse. Hey...the doghouse ain't too bad!

I have a few suggestions for you, and I hope one of them helps you out. They range in both complexity and in how expensive they are to implement.

1) Buy a new humidor. I just saw some "scratch and dent" humidors on cigarbid going for $25 right now.

2) Use the tupperdor method as described earlier. This will work for a few weeks and probably up to 2 months. I don't really recommend this method for more than 2 weeks because it is easy to over humidify the cigars and risk having them split. Also you need to open up the container at least once every 2 weeks or so to avoid having the air get stale.

3) Buy a disposable humidification device from your local cigar shop, make some room in a cigar box and add it. The cedar the box is made from will act as a temporary humidor with one of these devices.

4) Make a coolerdor. Convert a large cooler into a humidor by adding a humidification device (oasis foam and a soap dish will work), and line it with spanish cedar. Make sure to use a 50/50 PG-distilled water solution. You can even by some cheap plasic coated shelves, and stand it upright so it opens like a fridge. You can get spanish cedar from some lumber yards...even some over the internet...or by just taking apart some of the cigar boxes you have stashed away. This is an easy way to create long term bulk cigar storage. As with the tupperdor, make sure you open it up every few weeks as it will seal airtight. Coolerdors are also great at regulating the temperature.

4) Rent a storage locker at you local cigar shop. Usually around $30/month.

Hope these suggestions help.

I hear you, I talked my wife into letting me get a 2,000 cigar humidor cabinet, and saying this is more than enough room for me. I got that last November, I am already tossing about the idea of getting another one, purely to age boxes in, (the one I have now, half is used to box age, the other half has cigars loose) I am trying to be tactful about it, making it sound as a joke at first, but keeping it in the back of her mind, so I can slowly work on her, but I can't be too slow about it, the cabinet I have now is overstuffed, I still use three regular humidors for odds and ends. I also don't like that I can't buy cigars at will anymore since I don't have the room, my theory is, build the humidor and the cigars will come.
My other theory is, 20 years down the road you never know what the state of cigars and the law will be in this country, in the least I see more and more taxes, so again, best to be prepared.

My local tobaccoist says to put them in the freezer inside two zip-lok bags. He says that all cigars should get a few days of the freezer treatment anyway to make sure the tobacco weevils (if present) are dead. He says he has had to send back quality cigars due to tobacco weevils.

Also, I think it has already been mentioned, but how about throwing in one of those little cheap humidifiers in old wooden cigar boxes. How long will preserve them?
