How about a rousing Raspberry for Daryl Strawberry ?! This gifted piece of **** has yet again shown his inability to take responsibility. He belongs behind bars where he'll find a new meaning to being hooked on "crack". He is not just an addict. He is a self-gratifying celeb who thinks he can get away with anything simply by blaming everyone but himself. The only victim is his family, but it's probably too late for them.

i think you should back off him. i have seen recent pictures of him, and he is a sick (mentally and physically)old man. he can't take responsibilty, the drugs have destroyed him. i know he shouldn't have started. i know he was a gifted athlete. i know he screwed up, but he is a dying old man. let him die in peace.

If MY tax dollars go towards his rehab/punishment, then he can't die fast enough. He had enough chances, and I supported most of them. Ok, maybe I didn't, but so what.

Old Man? Rick, he is only about 40 years old! He threw his life away and ruined the lives of his family at the same time!

Look, people, where is your compassion??. As Rick said, alcohol drug abuse is a MAJOR problem in the U.S. Not just for sports athletes either. I know in my heart that if (god forbid) my son or daughter got into trouble with drugs or alcohol, I would get them the best help I could. A person on drugs is not responsible for what they do, believe me. You're thinking of it as if he made a decision to become an alcoholic or addict. This is just not the case. Alcohol and drugs rob our ability to fight, they beat us into submission and then steal our souls. Most alcoholics and addicts are physically, morally, and mentally bankrupt by the time they hit their bottom. And that's just what they need to do to get well. Take a look at all the movie stars that turn to the bottle becuase they can't cope with the real world? This is NOT about a conscious choice, it's about a sickness, a disease. Drugs are out there to steal our children folks, we better know what to do and how to act when and if the time comes we need to get help. There are alot resourses out there for help but one thing is for sure. They can't get well if they're not ready to surrender........(remember too, that this is someones son, someones brother, we all deserve a chance)....Brent

Brent and Rick, yes I agree that it is a sickness and that they should not be tossed into jail, or placed against a wall and executed! I don't have the answers nor do I pretend to have them...........but how far must we go with this problem? Charlie PS-I gotta run to work.....later on this subject!

Brent, your points are well stated and 100% true. HOWEVER, this is not your run-of-the-mill drug addict, and my ridicule is not regarding his disease. It is the persistence of this piece of **** to BLAME someone else. He has done it umpteen times before, and he will continue to do it until he takes that one last breath from a rancid crack pipe. I wouldn't give two pennies to that scum even it meant he would be off of drugs for good. I would have offered it the first time. And the second. And the third. Get my drift? He's had the chances, and he's had the best help Steinbrenners money can buy. He's a punk and the world will be a better place without him.

He needs to want to stop. No one can make anyone do anything they don't want to do. When he hits bottom and
doesn't have anyone enabling him then he has a chance to recover. Be it in AA, NA , religion, psycology or whatever he has to want it more then anything else. It's a hard road but thousands if not millions before him have done it. Glenn

Tailgator, I totally understand where you're coming from. The disease is a total bitch, it's insidious and cruel. The other problem with the disease, is called DENIAL. You and I both know that you can do the same thing over and over again and get the same results right? Well, addicts are so much in denial about their illness, they're blind to it, they will literally steal from their mother or take their son's piggybank money for drugs or alcohol without so much as a tear. Do I think that's right or OK?, **** no. But I do understand it's the illness that makes them do it. I have known people in my life that I totally gave up on. I wouldn't have thought for one minute these people could get help but they did. God intervened in their lives (after their admittance of hopelessness), and after losing everything they had. They were loved back to health by the fellowship of AA and other great programs. There are many, many actors, famous people who went down that road many, many times. With help, they have become some of our nations most competent resourses. Would I have wanted to give up on some of my dearest friends because of drugs or alcohol. Yes, I have. I let them go and then prayed that they find recovery. Some get it some don't. It's a thousand to one chance, but it can happen, to Daryll Strawberry or anyone else for that matter.....Brent

Brent, I can not and will not argue with that. Well stated once again. I understand compassion and applaud those like yourself that can so readily hand it out. It is alot like welfare. Many people NEED the governments assistance. Others abuse it and EXPECT it. Daryl is the latter. It's also a lot like suicide. It's tragic, but it is the cowards way out. Period. Daryl is not a victim. This is truely self inflicted. If he were a despondent street bum, then my heart may bleed for him. But he wants to live the high life without regards for his family. I can not and will not ever feel badly for the perpetrator of this crime. It is the family that deserves Steinbrenners money and it is the family that deserves your high quality compassion. Daryl should be behind bars because in addition to this being a heinous crime against his family, it is also against the law.

I had a little fun last season on a similar subject. I was sitting 2nd row in right field (near Pesky's pole for you Fenway Faithful). The Yanks were in town and when Doc Gooden took the mound in relief I was able to garner David Justice's attention by "pointing out" that he had a Coke Head on the mound. Justice's mistake was acknowledging that he could actually hear me. From that point on, the entire right field section gave him endless crap. Classic Sox/Yankee rivalry. The kind of stuff that brings tears to your eyes in anticipation of telling your future grandchildren...

That's back when the term "Dodger" was in regards to street cars rather than drive-bys....

Where have I been during this post? I am a lifelong baseball fan who thinks that artificial turf and indoor baseball should be retired from the sport. The Red Sox are a jinxed team, with a great history! Billy Buckner, forgive me, has to have made one of the biggest blunders in all of sports. What a f_ _ k up! He will be remembered forever and will never know peace in Boston. They need to get rid of this whacko Carl Everett, and get Nomar back in lineup. Too bad that won't happen soon enough. I have Pedro Martinez on my fantasy team! Charlie
