Freshen a cigar

When my cigar is smoked down enough to start getting a little stale, I just wait for it to go out, then clip off half an inch or so. This cuts off much of the built up tar and makes the cigar much better when I relight it.

Are you saying you clip the foot of the cigar?

Here's an effective way to enhance the taste of your cigar when you relight, even after several hours. Gently remove all the loose, gray ash from the foot of the cigar. With the cigar in hand, hold a flame 1/4 inch below the rim of the cigar. Rotate the cigar slowly until the periphery of the rim is lit. When the coal has spread over most of the foot, put the cigar in your mouth and hold a light to the end of the cigar until it ignites a yellow flame. DON'T DRAW ON THE CIGAR! Take a deep breath, and blow steadily and hard enough that the flame shoots out the end of the cigar. Leave the lighter in place, or remove it if the flame sustains itself. The flame should change colors ... quite amazing. Continue blowing for several seconds, until the flame changes from yellow to blue and gets smaller, perhaps extinguishing. Now take you first puff ... with all the tar and carbon burned off the foot of you cigar, it will no longer taste bitter!

I also tend to cut approx 1/4 of an inch more of the head when it starts to taste stale...Seems to remove much of the tars and nicotine that collects there and tastes sooo much better!...Slim, King of the Copy and Paste....LOL

The only thing I would add to Slim's excellant assessment that has worked for me is, if you know you are going to let it go out, exhale thru the cigar while lit to eliminate any smoke inside the cigar. It seems to taste better upon relighting!

Getting stale? Not sure what that means but iffin’ I get tired of a cigar I either tough it out and finish it or put it down and get another cigar that’s hopefully better.

You can't be cutting um off and tossing them away.
Just think about all the poor souls in cbid land that are running low and running out. Let's not be wasteful.

Is he talking about tar buildup maybe? I find that's not usually an issue if you smoke slowly enough

I don’t fully understand. I smoke a little quick. Fast once in a while.

The relight idea sounded interesting. Maybe plausible. Burning the end off. I’ll relight one once in a while in the morning. If it was decent and a lil long yet.

I have used the blow through the cigar method many times if I know I have to let it go out for some reason. Does seem to make an improvement on relight.

It does, but it's like leftovers vs a freshly cooked meal. I found I'd reach for a new one and end up with a stash of stogie stubs. I try to grab something for the time I can verify I have

I relit a smoke this morning. It was fine. I burned the crap off the end and blew through it 7-8 times. To be fair I believe it was better than it would’ve been if I hadn’t made that effort. It sat for a good 8 hours.

I always felt like it takes an inch or two to get back into the groove. Mebbe it's just my taste buds that need warming up, or I'm doing it wrong. Always a possibility

I haven't not finished a cigar in one sitting in a long time so the only time I purge is when it looks like the cigar is on the verge of going out and puffing on it doesn't work. The purging helps rekindle the burn.

I’ve had luck stopping a tunneling cigar that way. Not that it always works. But it occasionally does. Worth a go if you catch it quick

I here the word tunneling, also canoeing. Not really a noob, but kinda just after a true definition. Can you post pictures of what these are in your own experience?

Don't typically like to leave a cigar unfinished, but actually had it happen this week that I couldn't finish (giggidy). In the rare event it does happen, still good to know if there's enough to salvage for a later smoke.

quick splanation:

canoeing: one side/half of the cigar burns much faster than the other side as you smoke...when you tap the ash off, you're looking at unburned tobacco that looks like a...

tunneling: the inner filler leaves burn faster than the outer wrapper and binder leaves, so when you tap the ash, you have something hollow, that looks like a...

usual causes are poor construction/rolling or smoking too fast

Yeah, I have that problem, but not with cigars though.
