So Cal Ripken is retiring. I've heard many friends and players close to him state that the next few months will be tough on him because of the farewell reception he will get in every ball park. If that's the case, then why did he announce it so early? He could have waited until September and his "grief" would be a lot less. I think he likes the spotlight, which is OK, but please don't pretend otherwise.

I have always been a Cal Ripken fan, but this "final tour" thing is getting trendy in sports and now Tony Gwynn has done the same thing. I think both are great credits to the world of sport and baseball. It seems the owners are as much a part of these announcements as the players due to the "gate" potential from city to city! It is a sign of the times. Charlie
