Too much is being made of this aging issue. It is such a subjective thing that it is hard to put a timeline on every cigar. Sure aging usually helps, but is not always a necessity. I smoke many cigars right out of the box and they are fantastic! I look at it this way, I buy a box, try one or two, and if it tastes green, I let it sit. I remember that in the future I let those sticks sit a while. ( I agree with letting the 5 Vegas sit…they do calm down in the humidor) Then there are other times, my cigars taste better out of the box than they do sitting for 6 months. For instance, CAO maduros are awesome right out of the box. Same with La Gloria Cubana Maduros and Arturo Fuente Don Carlos smokes. Don’t get too caught up worrying if you’re giving your stogies enough time to age. Smoke `em and enjoy!!!

I am forming the opinion that the stronger the cigar, and/or a maduro cigar, the better they get from age. I don't think it makes too much difference with mild cigars, and I may even put forth that on average most Dominican cigars don't need much aging, but cigars from the Honduras and Nicarauga will almost always improve with age. It also depends on the manufacturer, some rush the cigars to the market, others let them age before putting them on the market. And the majority of cigars will taste at least respectable right out of the box, aging only enhances it. There are other variables as well, but nothing to do with mangos in syrup though.

one other important factor, for many of us, aging cigars is all part of the enjoyment of our hobby as it may. Some people just like to buy a few cigars here and there and smoke them right away, that's fine for them, and how ever one approaches the cigar experience is an individual affair, and I am not one to knock someone else on their preference. But there are many of us that love to age cigars, and experiment with it, I almost consider my cabinet my cigar nursery, and I greatly enjoy the results of my tlc and also learn from experience on what ages better and when aging doens't matter.

I have to agree with Aberdeen, aging does help with the stronger cigars. Just like your stronger wines Bordeaux, Cab. etc. the longer you age them the better they get. If you age them to much the wine/cigar may go past it's prime. But most Pinots or a Chardonnay is at it's best when it is first bottled and gooes downhill as it gets older.

Like a kid at Christmas, I have never been able to resist trying a cigar a day or two after the box arrives. I always find that they improve after a month or two, but I don't consider that to be aging. To me that is just letting them stabilize, or "dry out". Aging, in my opinion, begins at about nine months and goes on for years. I have a select group of expensive cigars that have three years + on them. They are worth the wait, but I smoke too many cigars to let my everyday smokes get that much time. It depends on what you start with. If you are aging cheap cigars then you usually end up with old cheap cigars. If you are aging powerhouse Cubans, or the like, you may end up with the Mother of all cigars. Regardless, it is still fun to nurture them along and taste the fruits of your labors. It's like watching your garden grow.
