why a point spread and why does it change. this is a test. hint "vig"

I'm not a gambler, (and I don't understand the "vig" reference) but I believe the point spread is intended to help even-out the betting for each team. As the bets heavily favor one team, the spread will change to offset that disparity. It prevents them from going broke on an upset. The "over/under" on the other hand is based much more on each teams ability to score and/or defend. It tends to change more with injuries or anticipated weather than with the betting trend. Many folks tend to bet "one way" all the time. My brother in laws favorite expression is "you're never out of it when you take the over". He's now broke...

perfect. the vig or vigorish is the ten percent you pay to place your bet. as you said the bookies want even betting and are making money on the vig. today the rams under/over was 59.5. total score was 59. vegas is a great place if you don't gamble.

Don't know what you are getting at Rick..........duh the spread in Register is Miami favored by 9 pointsd and if you feel so strongly about Miami beating them you can spot me the 9 points for a couple of nice cigars! Are we on? Charlie

You vastly overrate Miami and it is going to be like a home game for Nebraska with the 80% plus Red in the stands. Oregon sure looked pretty damn strong last night! Charlie
