They're at it again! The Orange County (CA) chapter of the Red Cross recently held some event which includes children singing songs. In light of the events of 6 months ago, it was a patriotic theme. Yet God Bless America was not allowed to be performed. Nor were any songs with the words "God" or "Prayer" in the body or title. They didn't want to offend any participants. Makes ya all warm inside, doesn't it?

Sing the songs, don't sing 'em. Pick the ones you like. I would be alot more upset if someone was trying to MAKE me sing God Bless America. This is America and I'll do or not do as I please!

I live in Orange County, and it is one of the few remaining counties in the state that isn't heavily infleuenced by the Liberal Left, and where this came from I will never understand, but it is in fact the truth! I am really ashamed of the Red Cross and will not contribute any money to them again! Orange County is where John Wayne is buried and I am sure that the Duke is shaking his head and wondering what happened to Orange County California! Charlie

John Wayne promoted American values in most if not all of his movies. He worked with the USO in supporting US troops from WW2 to Vietnam. He was the President of the Motion Picture Alliance for the Preservation of American Ideals. The VFW's awarded him the National American Gold Medal in 1973...and was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor in 1979 which read: John Wayne,American! He helped to establish the JohnWayne Cancer institute.....need we go further?

the "duke" was an actor and made some ok movies. so did a lot of actors. he ehlped with the uso so did a lot of actors. he was given a medal. i have a medal.
other than founding the cancer research ctr, what did he as a person do. nothing! i did hear him being interviewed off the cuff and talking about bringing cattle to market. his remark was "good thing they are not holsteins, we'd have to bus them to market" if you can't see the racism in that remark, i can't help you.

Rick: Big John did what I hope we all do and that is to stay true to himself and to his beliefs. Whether you are a staunch liberal or conservative or somewhere in between, each only has his/her beliefs and integrity. Wayne was true to his. What I feel is unfortunate and appauling are organizations (Red Cross is merely one of many) and individuals who, in the name of political correctness or otherwise, apply different standards depending on their audience. Suddenly, those organizations and individuals become puely political and we all know how much integrity politicians have; both liberal and conservative.

I had the great opportunity to have a couple of drinks with John Wayne on several occassions and he was one of the finest gentlemen that I have ever met! He was Newport Beach and he owned the place and its people, would buy rounds of drinks for friends and first time acquantances at such watering holes/resturants as The Arches, The Warehouse, Balboa Bay Club and Woody's Warf just to name a couple of places where he would be seen! I have smoked a cigar or two beside his grave in Newport Beach..!!! Rick, you may not understand this but, Duke Wayne was a hero to me and a great man who never looked down on anybody regardless of their race or convictions! We need more "actors" with the same character and morals that John Wayne had and lived by! Charlie

John Wayne was not awarded the Medal Of Honor in 1979, or any other year.

Maybe that was the Medal of Freedom. Highest civilian honor.

John Wayne died in June, 1979. Shortly after that, Maureen O'Hara petitioned the House of Representatives to commission an award for him. The House passed a referendum asking the President to direct the US Mint to strike a medal in honor of John Wayne, and it was done. It WAS NOT the Medal of Freedom, it certainly WAS NOT the Medal of Honor; it was a special coin authorized by POTUS and struck by the San Francisco Mint.

Actually, the medal was called the Congressional Gold Medal and was given to the Duke's family in March of 1980! My apologies!

Watched "The Quiet Man" yesterday for St.Patricks Day (along with a bottle of Maker's Mark) and as usual enjoyed this movie very much! Who knows what John Ford's real name was (the great Director and long time associate of John Wayne's)? Charlie

John Ford was born Sean Aloycius O' Fearnan in Cape Elizabeth, Maine in 1894!
