I'm not a newbie, by most definitions, but recent consumption has risen within the last year to about 2 to 3 smokes per week.
My question to all of you 'gar gurus is this: What size cigar do you prefer to smoke, and WHY? Please don't mention "short sticks when pressed for time" or other obvious reasons. What size in length and guage and even shape, do you smoke when nothing else matters?

good question...I always prefer the bigger (at least 48)ring guage because they burn better, cooler, and can be a bit more complex. Other than that the biggest factor is MOOD. If I'm gonna go water the veggies I usually smoke one of my less prized cigars. If I have all the time I want to myself......then its just whatever looks tasty at the time. I like to keep a variety of sizes on hand. If I know I can smoke all night I generally choose a presidente size. That way I dont have to smoke 2 or 3. But sometimes I just cant wait to smoke a robusto, then after that, its that other tasty looking one, oooh! then that one!

Well...I prefer larger ring sizes (45-52 robusto or toro) for the same reasons as the unk and also they seem to have a better draw. I have had way more draw problems with coronas and lonsdales. I am also all italian and look better with a "gumba" cigar....haha!

You know, there are only two kinds of people... Italians and those that wish they were...(from an actual fellow-Gumba, not a wanna-be)...!!!

Generally, I like anything thicker than a lonsdale or corona x > 46 ring gauge, but like unklebill, the length is dependent on my mood. Generally I like the Robustos because my time with them is short and sweet and low maintenance, sometimes Churchills and Presidentes just get a little harsh after about half-way through, then I toss it and it feels like a waste of good tobacco, so I usually stick to Robustos. Man, how many times did I repeat myself repeat myself repeat myself there? :)

I like a smaller cigar in the morning if I'm giing to have one with my coffee, like a Lonsdale. Later, I prefer a Toro but, only when I have the time to just relax and enjoy it. I don't see the sense of lighting up a 50 ring cigar if I don't have the time to finish it. I used clip them if I was half-way done and had to go by putting the remainder in a cigar tube, but no more. I find they tend to taste burnt and the flavor isn't as good because of the tar build up in the cigar. So, for size on a regular basis, I'll take a Torpedo, I just love the shape and if it's the right brand it can pack a WHOLLOP.

For the record... Obviously, mood matters. But that aside, I tend to prefer the bigger rings, short to medium lengths. Robusto or Toro. Just thought I'd see what you "experts" chose.

I like the churchill best. Time is usually the biggest consideration when making a choice. In the morning or early afternoon, I will smoke a lonsdale or a corona. Reason being, my days are often filled with spontaneous hell and so I have to keep it short. In the evening, I tend to smoke the bigger sticks. I have the time to enjoy and savor the flavor of the larger sicks.

Berry works for the department of redundency department.....As for the question at hand. Time is the biggest consideration for me as well. When it isn't a consideration I prefer the torpedo or the double corona. They have the potential to be the most flavorful and complex. However there is a cigar shop here in Nashville that has a small cigar that they contract with a Honduran factory to make for them. It is by far the most flavor small cigar (about a 35 ring guage and about 4 inches long) I have ever smoked. It's a bit pricey at 6.50 so it's not a very good value for the money but it does qualify as an enigma.

Well, I know that the "time is the big consideration" answer is not what you were looking for but you have to realize you are not talking to fellow 3-5 cigar / week smokers like yourself. You are talking to morning, lunch, and evening cigar smokers....so of course, you know what kind of answer you will get...time... I think the better question is, "In your private cigar smoking time, what determines the size you choose."

I absolutely love the robusto with the a dark wrapper because it delivers an enjoyable favor while producing a large volume heavenly scented smoke and being self employed, I can make the time to enjoy one twice a day. Besides, it also makes me look like a tough guy..LOL.

^Corona gorda is such a nice size!
Interesting that most of these posters liked the larger ring gauges. From what I have seen people post on here the last 2 years, that consensus seems to have changed. I, personally, find most of the larger ringer gauges lamentable. Sometimes the larger size works, but more often than not, no.

It's sad that 52rg has become the norm for a toro.

And they're not at all phallic.
