jimbarr ... and hopefully enlightening these folks (and those new to the forums) from further 'dead horse' issues. Unfortunately ... most of the five years of really informative threads and posts are gone, because of the new format ... so searches are pretty much futile.

I have come to the conclusion, that the CigarBid forums have become a great place for the beginner and novice cigar smoker ... as there will always be new people who have just discovered cigars for the first time coming on board ... because these auctions are a great and 'hopefully' cheap way for them to try out different cigars.

But, after awhile, and I've talked to many 'oldtimers' who have left, this becomes just to repiticious for them to deal with anymore, and they are not getting anything out of sifting though countless threads looking for something worthwhile to them. They have moved on to more 'established' cigar forums ... where most of these 'novice' issues don't abound ... and the threads and comments are a bit more 'evolved'.

the limited search is definitely an issue.

the name calling has been around as long as i have been posting. it goes in cycles. we are FNGs and FOGs the term is not a problem.

You need moderators.

I'm with the Bassdude on this... moderators would clean up the trash and let us get back to the things we enjoy to chat about, like cigars...

imho.

I've said this many times before ... all forums need to
be moderated at some level ...

... but the staff at CB doesn't seem to want to offend any of their customers (bad for business) unless it really gets out of hand ... so they pretty much try to stay out of it as much as possible, and leave us to our own devices.

To me ... this just doesn't make much sense ... and gives the impression that the CB staff doesn't care all that much what goes on here.

Trish has come on board and given us her rare obligatory 'spanking' ... several times over the years ... but I personally don't think that holds much credibility with many of our posters.

I just post here part time. :-)

My feelings on this issue are mixed. On the one hand, I think we're all adults and can handle a little 'adult conversation', whether it be profanity, sexually explicit or just plain mean spirited.

On the other hand, I think some folks just don't have thick enough skin, or 'adult mentality' to handle an unmoderated board.

In the end, it's all up to the c-bid staff to run it as they will, but if any of you good folks out there are having trouble sleeping, or find yourselves stressed because of something you read on an internet forum, then you're taking things here much too seriously.

That's my 2 cents as one of the good guys, or one of the bad guys, depending on your perspective.

Smoke on...

good thread.

lotta good points here. the point was brought up that there are other places to go, with less crap to contend with is a great one. i find myself hangin other places more & more, and have found other places to buy, only because of this.

not sayin i won't bid here, but the less i visit this board, the less i find myself bidding. it kinda goes hand in hand with me.

hope this thread draws the right attention.

what black just said. My daily checking of this board has declined because of the lastest wave of noobs and A-holes that found this board. I no longer check the board 10-20 times a day. I bet i dont check it 3-5 a week now. And because of that my bidding has slowed to as blackfoot said, it goes hand and hand. When i spend lots of time on this board i often never go a day without checking the listing on auction. last week i checked the auctions only once total.

I have found another community board to waste time at lately.

Someone keep me posted on the idoit meter over here from time to time :)

Making a slight change to the forum would fix the problem. Instead of posting the person's CBID username as the Author of the post, put their full name. People hide behind their username. Half the garbage would not be posted if people had their first and last name beside it.

Unfortunatley ... that is a violation of an individuals right to privacy.

There are programs (such as spam-bots) that would pick up on that information in a heartbeat ... and 'could' open up a whole world of stuff you would wish you never had to deal with.

Trish:

I think all members must agree to written terms as to what is and is not acceptable. When CBid notices an infringement on the rules the member should be notified via email by CBid. First instance is a warning, the second a 30-day suspension of posting privilages, the 3rd lost of priviliges for a year. Beyond that permanent censure.

CBid should make it easy for members to report the infringement so that not all the monitoring is CBid's responsibility. CBid can then review the reports for accuracy.

They have done that since the day these forums started ...

... all one has to do is:

Log on to your account and submit a 'Customer Service Request' ... then 'Post New Customer Service Request'.

They read them and respond to them (and you) very quickly ...

Yeah, Slim you definitely know how to do that---you are THE pro.

I guess this is going to be a tattle tale kind of place from now on. And you wonder why it is loosing people. It would be nice if people could police themselves and we wouldn't need to have baby sitters.

CBW -

That's was my reasoning with you all policing yourselves. For the most part, you're already doing it and doing it well.

Slim is correct though. We DO remove posting privileges but we believe that this place was created for you guys and so we have a hands off approach. There are a few here (some of whom responded to this post) that need to take a deep breath before they respond to 'hot' threads.

Ask yourself, "Would I say this to him/her if I was standing in front of them?" If the answer is Yes, then post. If the answer is No, then rethink it.

Thats all I'm asking from you. Kinda like the golden rule of Forum use.

Great Post Trish,
I have not left, but I spend alot less time here. I am on several other forums, and lately this one has been dropped from my top priorty, to second. I love this board, and will never just up and leave. This is a great place for newbies, to learn more about the joys of the leaf, and the brotherhood surrounding the love of the leaf. I used to enjoy the misc. forum, but lately it I have to sift through a bunch of BS, to find intelligent arguements. It irritates me to see people resulting to personal attacks, when they cannot come up with any arguement to counter with. Also taking a posters words, out of context, to try and mistate the posters intention, to use against him. I see this alot, both in the media, and here on the boards. The constant use of propaganda techniques in debate, again because of lack of a reasonable rebuttal to a post, is widely used here. This is irritating. People, if you want to debate politics, learn to do it in a proper manner. Research the topic, formulate a reasonable arguement, or rebuttal, and post it. It is that easy. Do not just quote the popular party line, but dig into actual legislation, and see if what the politicians are telling you is the truth, or just spin. If you do this, you will never have to resort to propaganda techniques, or personal attacks. And as an added bonus, you get to learn something along the way. And always remember. Sometimes you need to just AGREE, To DISAGREE, shake hands, buy each other a beer or smoke, and find a new topic to debate.

You got that right, cigarbidwidow ... they don't call me the 'LOD' for nothing. I've earned it ... and I wear it proudly.

Call it what you will, but I've been helping the CB staff monitor these forums long before you (and many others) stumbled on to this place ... and I'll be doing it long after you leave (should you decide to do so) ...

"And you wonder why it is loosing people. It would be nice if people could police themselves and we wouldn't need to have baby sitters."

I guess you would like to believe that it is the people like me, who help out to keep these forums up to the standards set forth by CigarBid (and i'm not the only one by a long shot) that are running folks off ...

... but you are so mistaken.

Unfortunately, as nice as it would be ... there are many who have come and gone from these forums over the 5+ years I've been here, who just don't know how to police themselves ...

... and couldn't care less.

"many" ... gosh, that's scarcely the word ...

There've been quite a few departees who left after demonstrating an inability to police themselves, but whose behavior before going caused muliple times thier number of really good people to leave ... I could name at LEAST 6 dozen guys we seldom if ever see anything from because they got so sick and tired of bullsh** ...

CBW, i think you're too hard on ol' slim. he's actually straightened me out once or twice, and he wasn't rude about it. somebody has to be the one to help set the tone for the new folks that show up. the new guys may not know much about the group they're about to trade words with. i know i didn't when i first arrived. i know a little more now, and i actually have slim and some others to thank for that. i appreciate his contributions to the shaping of this forum. it's a good place, and he's one of the reasons for that. i think warrants a little more respect than many are willing to extend to him.

at the risk of sounding condescending, keep up the good work, slim.

Here's another little tip that works well for me. Before you click on the "Post Message" button read your post aloud and see how it sounds. If it sounds condescending, insulting, asinine, hurtful or stupid, it probably is. A little re-writing goes a long way in helping to convey the intended meaning and or tone of your message without pi$$ing off others and embarrassing yourself. With that said, I still manage to pi$$ off people from time to time and embarrass myself...just not as often! :-)

Why is everyone taking what I said as a bad thing? Reread it--without using your own spin on it (even chuckle at the end). "Yeah, Slim you definitely know how to do that---you are THE pro." It can be taken many different ways. How does anyone know how I meant it? I find it funny that a lot of you are jumping on me. Slim has been appointed THE pro. Is that a bad thing??? Not necessarily. I was not coming down on him with what I said. I was stating the obvious. He even said---"You got that right, cigarbidwidow ... they don't call me the 'LOD' for nothing. I've earned it ... and I wear it proudly." He is proud of the title. So why is what I said being taken as being nasty? It just goes to show that things can be written and others can take them the wrong way. That is the WHOLE point of this entire thread and many other discussions---people need to lighten up and not take everything that people say as being rude or nasty. When you read something always put a little chuckle and smile with it. If it is truly meant as being nasty, you will know. And then there may be a problem. At that point it can be handled.

My thing is that we shouldn't NEED Slim to be the moderator. We should be able to conduct ourselves in the proper manner. Every now and then people will slip and every now and then people will get out of line. But... that doesn't mean that every one has to jump on them. If a person apologizes to the person they offended then that should be the end of it. The dead horse shouldn't have to be dragged out again and again.

I have said it before---people come and people go. What's that saying---why can't we all just get along?

You're spot-on with that statement ... we shouldn't.
Unhappily, the need for an LoD has been greater than his ability (or that of CBid collectively) to provide ...

The problem, from my perspective and that of a great many others, is that overall quality of participation has declined markedly in the past couple of years ... sure, there's some really fine folks have come along during that time and they've added to the experience here ... sadly, there's also been a big influx of boneheads and squirrels and to our detriment, a LOT of good people have taken their leave of the forum.

Many of those who once participated in this forum are now quite active in other cigar oriented BBSs. While I do believe that this forum, in recent months, has been plagued with a general lack of courtesy and respect for others' opinions, I, personally, think there are myriad other reasons for people to gravitate to unsponsored cigar forums.

Only the unsponsored forums allow all retailers to post their special sales and only on the unsponsored forums is there the opportunity to interact with many owners and manufacturers. All the unsponsored forums, in which I participate, have several moderators. If a post crosses the line of what's proper, it's gone and the initiator is warned and given a recess, if not banned.

My guess....and it is just a guess...is that for many novice cigar smokers, the CBid forum is a first exposure to the cigar internet community. After a year or two, they find other cigar communities and resources where they feel fully welcome.

Just because we have to have a thread like this is one reason i frequent this board less and less. I can't stand sifting through the pile's of crap to find a decent thread to read. I seldom trade on the board anymore because of all the newb's (no offence). I trade at least once a week but always through private emails. There is a large network of FOG's who do most of thier business behind the seens. With the limited search it is hard for the newbs to know who is a newb and who is a vet. I post just enough to keep my standing here but that's all.

yep ... "advanced" will double the search capability ... which is a tiny fraction of the capability that existed prior to the "improvement" to the search function.

uhhh ... defective math? ... LOL

You're right, of course ... it DOES go back 18 mos and when I made that post, I hadn't looked at the advance feature since the day it was put in ...

But, even though my recollection of how far back one can now search was incorrect, my point is unchanged ... it's still a long way short of what we had before, which was the ability to go back to the beginning of time ...

I ran into the problem when looking for something I remembered posting sometime in '02 or '03 and learned that sadly, it's now inaccessable ...

I am so happy I didn't just turn this site off again but then I see a couple old timers on here like Slim and trish and a couple others. As far. As the ones who dish out garbage on others it's just best to ignor them even when it hurts more than any thing. I tried to post a pic but it is big from my I phone will have to find another way. To answer a couple questions asked about my post yes it is true I am only able to walk short distances with the ad of a walker and for the bad gramer and spelling that is from the stroke. So I guess if you can't stand trying to talk to another human being that wont give up. And. Dry up the. Your loss.
