This afternoon I was packing my traveldor for a 4th of July BBQ at mom & dad's and I had my cigar menu set for the day (as discussed in a previous post). I went into my Lars Tetens cigar jar (I am NOT wasting a humidor on these sticks!) to retrieve an Asadachi when I thought, "you know, maybe I'll try one of the Stars of Cuba that I've had in there for a while." So I reach in and pull one out and see it covered, I mean COVERED in what appeared to be plume (I keep each Lars in its original bag which has turned out to be a fortunate thing), but when I looked closer I saw the colors green and blue! "S#!t man! That's not bloom, THAT'S MOLD!" I pulled out the other S of C stick and lo and behold, it was starting with spots of mold as well. All the other sticks in there were fine, the Asadachis, the Seizans, the Sun Fook Kas, and the Big Tones were safe and fine as can be so this struck me as odd. Has anyone else ever had this happen to them with this cigar? And is it safe to smoke a cigar when it has been covered with mold spores (out of CURIOSITY alone)? The offending purpotrators of mold are now in the custody of a ZipLock Freezer Bag.

Hey Heg,
I can't answer the question as to why the mold happened, but being fairly proficient at Microbiology I can tell you that most molds are basically harmless. Most molds like either damp, warm conditions or are the result of one or more spores "infecting" an object, (such as a cigar in this case) and growing. It won't harm you but it might taste like crap. Just like the mold that grows on stuff in the refridgerator, that too can be ingested, believe it or not with no harmful effects.....Brent

well of course, I mean whether mold causes harm is of secondary purpose to the cigar smoker. If I see mold on a cigar, in fact the last thing I wonder is this harmful, first and foremost is the loss of a great friend, for I don't think zip loc and all the other recuperative attempts work against mold, and just has to be ceremoniously tossed in the bin. I had only one bad case, that was one of these Ashcroft's I had, covered in mold as well, I tossed it and every cigar touching it as a paranoid precaution in the bin. It had big fluffy mold, the kind you see on bread.

Be a man, brush off the mold, and smoke it!!! Then you can tell for yourself if it effects the taste.....Then report your findings back here.

I'm with unkelbill. I mean really, if you are going to smoke a Lars in the first place, the mold shouldn't bother you. In fact, I bet mold is nothing compared to what is on the inside of those horrid things. I'd smoke a urinal puck first.

Huminie-get off the fence and tell us what you really think of the Lars! Does that mean an Acid is out of the question too?

Huminie, send me your address and I'll ship an urinal puck out to you right away. :) I did not post my original message as a tribute to the outstanding smokes of Lars Tetens, I actually dislike the patchouli scented sticks now. My palate, FORTUNATELY, has grown to appreciate better cigars (no offense meant to those of you who enjoy Lars and Acid) and I was bringing the Asadachi to the BBQ because the scent of Lars Tetens does not offend my family. In addition, I have to justify spending so much on the sticks by at least smoking them... By the way, that was a funny post Huminie, actually made me laugh out loud. Gotta go smoke an R y J now to make myself feel better ;)

the pink piss pucks closely match the flavor of the lars while the evergreen scented mint colored urinal blocks smoke much like the ACID smokes. I have a box of the cherry blocks but can't put my finger on the taste. Macanudo maybe?

Now see, I have to disagree with you there, wanyburger. I find the blue urinal cakes to be more like Lars and the pink taste more like ACID (smell like them too). However, the green ones are most like Te-Amos. :)
