Ok, i know a lot of you out there are pretty knowledgable when it comes to humidors. I need a little help. I won a humidor here at cigarbid (yukon), i placed an analog hygrometer in it after setting it up, and the humidity constantly stays at 80 and as much as 85 percent... yes i did calibrate the hygrometer, in a wet towel for twenty minutes...my guess, is i need a new and better hygrometer... would like to have some good input from everyone here who has been doing this much longer.... Here is the kicker, i live in houston, tx, home of humidity...house stays at 75 degrees or cooler... thanks guys...

Well, your hydrometer could be off, but I would recommend performing a salt test on it to be sure. Take an object similar to a milk cap and fill it with salt (something flat rather than a 2 liter soda bottle cap. Add enough water to the salt so that it is a slushy consisancy...don't disolve the salt in water. Place the guage and the salt in a baggy, and then double bag it. Leave it for at least 12 hours. After 12 hours calibrate the guage to read 75%. That's it. If it is still reading high, then perhaps your "credo" is too wet. Dry it out a bit. I would also highly recomend using a PG/distilled water solution. The PG (propolyne glycol) will absorb the excess humidity. Hope this helps.

I have had a problem of late with hygrometers in my new 'dors. All of them register about 80% and I have recalibrated them using the wet towel approach. So, I went to Radio Shack and bought a digital hygrometer. I tested it with the wet towel and after 6 hours it showed 97% humidity. I have been using it lately to test the 'dors and found to be about 10% low. One thing I have learned, not all 'dors are alike and the cheap little hygrometers aren't worth a flying flip.

You are right about the cheap hydrometers...they are useless unless calibrated to 70% RH. Do this by utilizing the salt test. What ever the reading then shows will be your actual 75% RH. For instance after the salt test your reading is 80% then your hydrometer is reading 5% high so adjust to that reading. Simple!
