October 9th – Today I drove the last nail and turned the last screw. Now it’s time to season the case and abandon the tupperdor.

It took a little more than six months of leisure time in the garage and $300 in materials to hammer this thing out. It was more effort than I thought. But my wife helped with critical design feed back and even found me a piece of re-used glass for the front (so, like we’re green – I think). But it’s done. And a few white knuckle moments aside, it was a lot of fun making sawdust and hacking up the dead trees. At last my Pineapple White Owls will have the place they deserve!

I’d like to thank everyone who followed this and posted all the kind words and encouragement. So here goes: Thanks.

I’m thinking of having a brass plaque made that reads:

“I've got a great cigar collection - it's actually not a collection, because that would imply I wasn't going to smoke every last one of 'em.”

But enough projects for now. Tonight I’ll break into my Montecristos, just kidding about the White Owls . . . .

Brewha, I've been following your posts on this project and I gotta say that it turned out beautifully. I really like the way it looks like it's almost floating out there. Great work I hope you enjoy it. I truly envy the abilities of the woodworkers and artists here. Rock on!

All - glad you liked the postings.

This is the first time I ever chronicled a project, and I must stay I enjoyed it more with the Cbid gang watching.

As of this morning, the humidor is fully stocked and is holding nicely at 68%. It’s great to be able to see what smokes I have after living in a tupperdor and a small desk top unit.

I want to encourage anyone who would try to turn a dead tree into a humidor to give it a shot. It was a lot of fun, and I would be glad to share any info I might have.

Great job,it probably cost you less than buying a new one, how many cigars you think you can store there ?

It maxes out around 600 with room for bead jars. But a practical sizing with random spacing, and not too much fussing, is probably 400. Here is the design break down:

Drawers: 2 rows of 20 x 3 high x 3 drawers = 360 cigars.
Shelves: 4 boxes of 20 x 3 shelves = 240 cigars (this assumes the boxes do not fit well. One brand I like will fit 8 boxes on a shelf).

Today it has 3 boxes and about 180 loose cigars. So it’s comfy and well stocked (at least for me). I also keep my travel humi and cigar cases in there, so they are pre-humidified.
The top shelve is for browsing through the glass; reserved for 5 packs, one offs, yet to be tried, and a few special ones.
A wireless Oregon Scientific hygrometer updates the readout by the kitchen table, so I can eye it during our evening cocktails.

I really wish i had the tools and the patience to make something like that,you sir did a great job,and if i had enough money to afford it i would bug you until you agree to make me one, anyway is all the inside made out of Spanish cedar?

SG, yes, all Spanish cedar. I bought 4/4 rough and re-sawed it to 3/8” thick.
