If the technology was available that could detect genetic defects, would test your baby? If the technology was available to fix those genetic defects would you?

The future is now:

Who Should Consider Genetic Screening?

Group

Disorder

Screening Tests

All

Cystic fibrosis

DNA analysis of a sample of blood or of cells from the inside of the cheek

Ashkenazi Jews*

Canavan disease

DNA analysis of a sample of blood or of cells from the inside of the cheek

Familial dysautonomia

(hereditary dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system)

DNA analysis of a sample of blood or of cells from the inside of the cheek

Tay-Sachs disease

Blood tests to measure the enzyme that is deficient in this disorder (hexosaminidase A)

Possibly DNA analysis

Blacks

Sickle cell anemia

Blood tests to check for abnormal hemoglobin

Cajuns

Tay-Sachs disease

Blood tests to measure the enzyme that is deficient in this disorder (hexosaminidase A)

Possibly DNA analysis

Mediterranean people

β-Thalassemia

Blood tests to measure the average size of red blood cells (mean corpuscular volume)

Southeast Asians, Cambodians, Chinese, Filipinos, Laotians, and Vietnamese

α-Thalassemia

If average size is small, blood tests to check for abnormal hemoglobin

I'd hope so. I once failed an IQ test.

wheel,

Not looking for perfection. But if you could save someone from a life of mental retardation or down syndrome, or pre-disposition to heart failure, I would do that.

Hell, even if we're not talking about improving the quality of life, think of how much money it would save in medical costs or educational aids, etc. etc.
