The Clinton comparison has been much in the air after President Obama’s deal to extend the George W. Bush-era tax cuts. But a more apt analogy for the present lies in 1990, not in 1994, and with George Herbert Walker Bush, not with William Jefferson Clinton.

It was in 1990 that Mr. Bush broke one of the most celebrated promises in modern American politics —“Read my lips: no new taxes,” as he put it in 1988 — in order to control federal spending. In the same way that Mr. Obama struck his deal to secure lower tax rates for the middle-class and win an extension of unemployment benefits, Mr. Bush gave on tax rates to get “pay as you go” rules — meaning that no further spending could be approved without compensating budget cuts or revenue increases. It was the beginning of the fiscal discipline that helped create the budget surpluses of the 1990s.





So - according to a leftist liberal - it wasn't Clinton that gave us a "budget surplus" in the 1990s (which there was no surplus), but Bush 41.

Sucks to be a liberal these days...

I support the legalization of pot, think that we should have much stricter regualtions on welfare, border control and illegal immigrants, am indifferent on gay marriage, against free health care for everyone and I consider Canada the 52 state. Does that make me a Liberal, Conservative, or just Awesome? Oh, and stricter punishment for people arrested for violent crimes, and anything to do with children or old people.

Oh those dang liberals. If only there was such a thing. But I guess if that's all you got, then that's all you got. Keep ahold of it tight. Like a drummer at a shaman convention, he's the busiest guy doing nothing.

Bush didn't create the economic downturn, which helped Clinton beat him.
Clinton didn't create the budget surplus that occurred during his presedency.
