Living in 1999...

Silverchair - Neon Ballroom....critical success, but I've never found it to be good for anything other than background music...revisiting leaves me feeling the same

Live - Distance to Here...also critically acclaimed; this time the critics got it right. This sounds as good as it did 18 years ago. Slightly better than Throwing Copper, even.

Great time for fusion...at least for me. I never found free-form jazz to be very accessible to me....Pat Methany was one of those that got me hooked on the next generation of jazz...with real melodies..right around 1980...he and Sanborn, Clarke, Syro Gyra, Lorber, Tom Scott....they tread a fine line between saccharine soft rock and jazz. Methany hit the sweet spot for me.

I worked in the retail record business from 1973 to 1982 so got to see the rise of fusion as a young pup. The older guys I worked with exposed me to CTI / Kudu and greatly expanded my horizons so by the time ECM started releasing artists like Metheny, I was ready for him. Still have many vinyl albums from those days (...but no turntable to play them Brick wall ...).

You can still find decent turntables that won't break the bank.

Dkeage - Speak to the hand

DMV - I've vacillated on this for over 20 years. At one point I was going to spend about $1500 for a table and MC cartridge but changed my mind at the last minute. Then I was gonna go the other way and just get a $100 cheapie but changed my mind again. Now that my stereo system is in storage, the urge to get a turntable has been totally quenched. But who knows, I'm a Gemini and can change my mind at any moment. Anxious

Eric Clapton - The Best and Worst Live: The Abuse Years 1974 to 1979

A comp of some of Eric's finest as well as terrible performances during his drunken period. On some songs he's as drunk as a skunk (...slurring, swearing at the audience, sloppy guitar playing...thank goodness for George Terry...), on others, less drunk but pushed by guests such as Carlos Santana and Pete Townshend, he delivers great solos. Was fun to make and listen to once in a blue moon.

"The Abuse Years" is apropos. ..because the drinking was trivial compared to his £8000 per week heroin habit! Scared

interview where he talks about it --> http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=15412830

Thank God Eric's still around. Huge fan.

The original "wall of sound" from just three cats. Their early stuff is incredible.
I learned to play harmonics from listening to Billy.
Hendrix thought he was pretty good too.

Ginger Baker's Air Force....so much talent...so much potential...maybe that's why its so disappointing....because I wanted it to be Cream...or Traffic ....or Blind Faith, even...but its an historic jam that might have been incredible live...but meh

even if the song is not at all about trains in any way, I am a sucker for songs that have that clickety clack forward drive of trains incorporated into them...liked very much, unusual for me on one listen.

Even though they were "popular", I always felt their popularity was wrongly limited due to the perception of being an artsy band.

thanks

Besides Carlos and JM, the rest of the band:

Khalid Rasin (fka Larry Young)
Doug Rauch
Armando Peraza
Billy Cobham

So in a way, there were 6 virtuosos in that group.

As far as the Hawaii show goes, I've been reminded by my friends who were also there that they played for 3 hours that night (...last tour stop and all...). Sure wish I could find a recording!
