Of course, I ordered a box of toros as well. My concern is that CI's current offering, which is an attempt at a re-make, also gives the same description as far as the 93 rating and flavor profile. Guess we'll see.

Anyone know for sure why La Perla changed the blend and the packaging of the Black Pearl morado in the first place?

Well blended cigars attractively packaged are certainly not rare, and they always seem to find plenty of buyers as they were originally blended and packaged. Think

I've been looking all over for this article, and finally found it. This is an interview with Doug Wood, the founder of LPH, back in the fall of '07, the year the Morado was introduced.

“We wish we had enough of this tobacco to produce several years’ worth of our new Black Pearl Morado (Purple) premium cigar,” explains Doug Wood, founder and president of La Perla Habana Cigars. “But, its featured Cameroon wrapper is in shorter supply than we expected, so we can only offer limited supplies of Morado in three shapes: Robusto (4.75" x 52) Toro (6" x 50), and Torpedo (6.25" x 52).” In 2005, La Perla Habana marked its tenth year in business, and this was the cigar Wood wanted for that celebration. He first experienced the character of this blend through Rafael Guerra, a Cuban friend he met on a trip to the island’s Vuelta Abajo region. As the anniversary approached, however, Wood was disappointed to learn there would not be enough of this Cameroon wrapper leaf for production. He would not substitute another wrapper, feeling it necessary to have the best for this cigar. “The tobacco is now ready,” reports Wood. “Its long-filler blend combines genuine African Cameroon wrapper, Nicaraguan-grown Habano binder, and Nicaraguan filler tobaccos. The cigars are hand made in the Toraño family’s Esteli, Nicaragua, factory. ........

.......... The line has received much media attention, as well as earning excellent ratings and reviews by the cigar press. "Throughout history,” notes Wood, “the color purple ... morado ... has signified royalty. I believe Morado is the finest cigar we’ve made ... with the first one I smoked, I knew it was perfect.” Manufacturer’s suggested retail price for the Morado is $9. The Black Pearl Morado will be available at tobacco retailers nationwide this August .

Note the rare, limited wrapper and very limited production. Also the fact that they are Torano rolled (which makes sense once you smoke one). Futher proof that current production and these are not the same.

just to clear things up, what your saying is that the current production are not the same (of course) but the boxes we ordered/should be receiving should still be the original?

Let's see if I can make this crystal clear.

1) Morado comes out in '07 in limited production with a rare Cameroon wrapper.
2) Cigar is considered a premium stick, sells at a premium price, and garners high reviews.
3) Doug Wood, owner of LPH states that label will be retired once wrapper is gone.
4) Production ends and by early 2010 last few boxes disappear from retailer's shelves.
5) Early 2011, cheap sticks, wrapped in the Morado band show up here, that are claimed to be “the same as the original”.
6) I acquire one, smoke it side by side with an original release, and pronounce it a “dog rocket imposter”. Other Morado fans come to the same conclusion.
7) CI Weekend Spotlight claims to have found some of the original release '07 premium sticks, and are clearing them out at about ½ what their dog rocket version is going for.
8) I order some, and then tell you folks about them.
9) You folks order a chit load of them.
10) Now we're all waiting with baited breath to see if what we ordered are really long lost, '07 release, original blend premium Morados, that CI found in an abandoned mine shaft, on the Island of Misfit Toys.

Got you up to speed?

They taste good too.

Too bad I couldn't re-use these trays in a cooler though.

YES.

I don't see how they have the balls to call the knock-off a 93 rated smoke.

I am now smoking my first OR Morado and let me tell you,the shit knock-offs that I bought under the assumption that they were these, aree no where even close to the OR.

Since Steve swore up and down that the knock-offs were the OR I feel totally screwed by buying them as I did.

Then I am either wrong on when they got the 93 rating, or these sticks are from '08. Either way, they are one heck of a lot better then the current cr*p, and I'm more then satisfied.

I'm really glad that you're enjoying that stick, Chris. It's also nice to know that others now understand why this Morado knockoff thing has been such a pet peeve of mine. I'm doing a side by side Beli smoke off tonight, just to remind me how bad those knockoffs really are, lol.

Don't waste your time. But I know you will anyway.

I smoked a knock-off first. As you know Dave they are filled with soft spots and have an uneven burn.

This Robusto is heavy in the hand,NO soft spots, burn is crisp and clean.

I'm almost an hour into it and the flavors are amazing.

I'm not a smoker that can pick out nuts, leather, coffee etc.

I can and will say this.

This OR has FLAVOR.

The knock-off to me just tastes like stale tobacco.

When I say stale tobacco,I know what I mean.I smoked cigarettes for just over 20yrs and had my share of stale tobacco.

I will even take this one step further.

IMO the PI maduro is better than the La Perla knock-off.

The above statement is not for shit and giggles but just my honest opinion.

To anyone here that bought these OR.If you do not want them, contact me and I will take them from you.

If it was not for CI's bait and switch with the La Perla line I would have easily bought 6 or more boxes of these.

I'm stuck with 1 though.

I did not want to take a chance and end up with the same crap I allready have in the cooler.

Hope these are as good as you say, got a box coming Friday(ordered Sunday). Got a fiver of the so called morados a few months ago, had 1 and thought it was a rocket, the rest are buried. Had high hopes for a 93 rated only to be totally let down. They should be in the "unsmokables" section!

I have a few left of the originals. They were quite a deal and I could have kicked myself for only buying 1 box. I just jumped in the redo's and ordered 2 boxes. I will be doing a side by side this weekend if the shippment comes in by then. Man, the originals are good and I hope these compare favorably.

For those who would like to try the REAL LP Morado, the one that got the 93 rating, not the reblended, resurrected crap sticks CI has been selling under the same name for the past year, now is your chance. From what I can tell, these are the original 2007 release, complete with the rare Cameroon wrapper, cedar sleeve and cedar tray boxes. A real gem of a smoke, and a steal at $39 to $49 per box. Once you taste one of these, you'll understand why I'm so upset with the current production of dog rockets that have been passed off as these premium smokes. Of course I've already grabbed a supply. Get them while you can, boys and girls.

Unfortunate indeed that La Perla chose to continue using the same name for the reblended line, with much cheaper packaging no less. It would have been the easiest thing in the world to retire the original names and come up with new names for the reblended series. Then, if the original tobacco blend became available once more, they could have reintroduced the original line to more than likely, a very appreciative cigar buying public.

But no.
