Nick was such a good sport I couldn't pass on this one, hehe.

Here's the progress on my organic tobacco. Leaving one flower head, broke the other off. This is an heirloom Connecticut Broadleaf, trying to seed early 'cause of the drought I spose,

Makes a decent wrapper, yes I know it's green, but given time it might be decent.

If you're ever through West Tn., you're welcome at my little farm anytime, I can use all the pros tips I can get!

Hey I was looking for some fermentation tips,

I've already got enough nibbling critters and worms, hehe.

They do look good, some are pretty large, some have worm holes, gonna try my hand at curing and aging, some folks are gonna get a surprise leaf or two in trades, eventually, who knows, maybe a hand made cigar?

That is how I got started on tobacco as a kid, my grandparents dipped powder snuff, but this region of TN is known for chew, they (mods) shouldn't mind since they don't sell cigarettes or chew, It' usually in the Co-ops, etc. All over the country, nice mild, good flavors natural.

If you want I can send you some, (addy required) as it has fallen under the no ship laws. I have a co-op in my home county that keeps it.

google Stoker's chewing tobacco. The family company shop (old man Fred passed in 09) has been closed, but the baccy lives on!

Some old guys that worked with my dad on the RR grew their own and would make their own twists, now that was meeeaaannn tobacco for chew, I think they got a kick out of a 15-16 yr old chewing strong stuff, thinking they would see me go green, hell I had been dipping powedered snuff for a couple years by then, That's when SKoal, etc. was new, I was dipping Garrett sweet or scotch snuff, hehe.

I am a chewaholic, been buying wolf straight the last few years ever since Skoal decided there stuff was made out of gold! I actually can't tell the difference between the two.

Would love to try some of that local stuff one day Numi

We may work something out, but this is not fine cut, it is like pouch or "plug" tobacco.

I actually preferred the hard plug tobacco they once had an apple that was very tasty, but now all types of chew gives me terrible heartburn/reflux

I chew long cut, but that plug tobacco can get rather juicy! Used to chew up a piece of bubble gum and then take a wad of red man, wrap the gum around it. That's when i was pitching ball. learned it from a Okie that moved up here for a while. Ahh the good old days, Baseball !

Skoal original fine cut is my chew.
I do like me a good leaf chew though. And I also remember a brand called Apple Jack that I can't find anywhere anymore. I'll give ya ring sometime soon, I found all kinds of coins so I need to know what to look for, lol. You gave me a lot of info in a small amount of time last call.

that part I'm sure of,

but my sense of honor (probably foolish pride as well) is bigger than my current ability to properly reciprocate, unless you are into collectible coins, LOL

I've got a number of those, why I keep my addy rather close, don't want harm to come to anyone.

Not Bad my friend. First of all clean up the first two set of leaves. Those bottom leaves are robbing from the other leaves and should not be used. How old are the plants? looks to me about 40 days after you planted them. If so after you clean up the two sets of leaves from the bottom. You have to break of the flower. The first plant is to late and I will tell you how to collect the seed for future plantings and how to store them correctly. Wait a total of 60 day and then pick the first 2 sets which will be your seco(light leaves used for combustion) then wait 7 days for your next set(viso) Which are medium in flavor. Then wait another 7 days and then you will pick (ligero) strong in flavor and thinck in texture. Remember from the bottom up. Lets do this because my fingers arent the best. PM me and I will call you. I dont know what you put into the grown and your seed looks like Criollo98. I also have to tell you how to make a small hanging space etc. I will post a picture now of one of our crops. When I get up to TN. I will have to check it out.

Hope this helps you a little.

Check out the Perdomo DVD. (No I am not trying to sell it) But it has great info on all aspects of cigar making from seed to the final packaging of all Perdomo cigarcdfs. But be aware it is 3+58 minutes long. But if you love cigars and really want to learn. This is it!

All the best.

Great info, thanks NIck, I just did this on a whim, got the plants from these guys,

http://www.newhopeseed.com/tobacco_plants.html.

You are correct it may have been a little longer, been quite a drought for me here this year.

I grew tobacco from seed years ago, I don't really have a set-up to do so right now, and if my back/disc/spinal stenosis allows, I'm gonna try more next year.

I will do that(PM) I hate typing as well, played a little country dumb, but can use the cigar style help, left the flowers on the one plant for seed (a connecticut B-leaf)

better gimme a few years, I gotta feeling that it may need to age, those top leaves are very thick, sticky and mean smelling, hehe.

I've been picking the little flower heads off as they pop out and I'm very sticky afterwards.

There should be a pod at the base of the dried flower and it will be full of little mustard sized seeds, very, very small

I've wanted to see that as well. I'm hoping to do the tour in Esteli next year, however. We'll see if that works out....
