1st mistake - using the sponge humidifiers to begin with!!! Buy beads.
2nd mistake - using a liquid or spray adhesive. Should have used double-faced tape or velcro.

Will probably take a few weeks to a couple months for the smell to dissipate depending on the spray adhesive. If it's 3M's 77 - months.

Can your friend say "DOH" d'oh!

He does have the beads but it was more of a cosmetic thinng since the sponges kept falling off. Should have just ditched them at that point

2nd mistake - agreed

I'm working so I can't read through all the posts. So if someone already said this then below me.

Leave it open over night. Tomorrow take a mixture of water and rubbing alcohol and lightly rub it down a few times. Again let it air out. If smell still there then lightly use sandpaper. Don't sandpaper around the seal where you damage the seal or anything like that. Just take a SMALL layer off to bring out fresh cedar smell. Wipe it down again with just water and let it air out real good. Re season and put your Gurkhas back in.

Not trying to be a smart azz but what does the rubbing alcohol do? Does it extract these fumes from the wood?

And, I wish I had Gurkas, those are way above my crappy cigars, right DMV?

Rubbing alcohol is the only thing I know of that is a good astringent or cleaner that evaporates. People use it for mold which obviously isn't tebproblem here but wouldn't leave a smell behind and is a very strong chemical. Or whatever it's called.

Maybe vinegar? Instead of alcohol.

Or just rub it down with a damp cloth, leave it open for a couple days and if thr doesn't work I'd use a little sand paper. Just feel like you should at least clean it with something though. The fumes have obviously soaked into the wood.

I would have just used self adhesive Velcro so you can take the humidifier out once and a while?? PS just use beads it is goof proof

The humidor owner has elected to hypothetically do a light sanding, vacuum up the dust and a wipe down with distilled water. Lid is now open drying/airing out. The humidor owner will pick up some baking soda and put a small amount in a bowl as well. All would have turned out fine if this was a really issue.

Acetone will remove any residue left by the spray adhesive. The adhesive will seep into the pores of the wood and only gum the sandpaper.

Good luck.

keep sanding the affected areas gently every day for a week or so, leave the humi open in a somewhat neutral RH environment (55 - 75)

then let it sit open for another week or so......

Then close it and leave it closed for several days......open....and take a whiff......if nothing...

season it like a new humi

This hypothetical friend of "yours" that "hypotheticaly used this spray adhesive on this hypothetical humidor", should of done his homework first, i.e. google, hypotheticaly it would of given him some words of caution on using glues in a humidor. Or hypothecically this friend of yours could of just asked in this forum what to do and given some type of hypothetical alternate solution to said problem.

Oh,I tried to make sure that the word hypothetical was used at least once on this hypothetical problem. Sarcasm

The solvent in most spray adhesives is acetone.
If the smell doesn't go away in a day or two (lid open) then the smell is from either:
A. the fumes went into the wood.
or
B. the solvent under the "sponge" isn't fully exposed to evaporate and this could last some weeks.

First thing I would do after waiting the two days, is to make a paste with the baking soda. Scrub the interior and rinse well with distilled water.
Let dry.

If the smell is still there, then you gotta remove what you glued and do this process again.

After the odor is gone, re-season your humidor.

Hypothetically, of course.

Hypothetically....ALL IS WELL.....I am happy to announce that the approach of sanding, vacuuming, wiping with distilled water and airing out will work in case this was to happen to someone in real life.

Did you figure out why you did this?

I mean, did you get whacked upside the head by your own shoe?
Perhaps in December of 1979??
Does the name Mike Milbury induce instant headache and a cold foot?

Just sayin...

No hard feelings for Milbury since he single handedly destroyed the Islanders for decades as their GM

True, but that was odd.
The guy knows hockey.
Was a great coach for the Bruins. Took them to two Stanley Cup Finals and even though they lost, we know how difficult it is to even get there.
Then went down to Lewoong Island and stuck the joint up.

Now he does TV up here and he's a breath of fresh air. Calls it like he sees it, even when he's talking about a Bruins player or coach.
Listen to his latest rant regarding Ovechkin.
He's spot on.
