There is no ONE best, all listed are gifted and music is like tobacco, different tastes...that said:

Living - Lifeson is my favorite too, Hands down.

Dead - Jimi was amazing, still is.

Another guy that gets NO credit .........Steve Marriott. SHOULD have been the lead singer of Led Zeppelin. Can you imagine how much better they could have been? A singer better than Plant who happens to be, at least, Page's equal on the guitar. As much as I love the mighty Zep, I can only imagine what they COULD have been.

impossible to settle on one, that's a given. Some arguments get settled by lifetime totals, that's how Yaz got into the Hall of Fame.

Considering that (longevity) as a factor, and the fact that he mastered many styles, and the fact that so many musicians are in awe of him, I can't believe I just read 3 pages without a mention of...

Richard Thompson! and he's got yet another new release out! probably not my personal #1 but has to be in the mix. And Shoot Out the Lights isn't even my fave stuff by him.

Never saw her play maracas.
I saw the cuchi cuchi gal display her guitar prowess on Mike Douglas back in the 1970's. Very impressive.
She's gotta be at least 60 by now. Xavier Cugat was a lucky man.

Looks like a lot of people vote for Jimi Hendrix as the best guitarist...I did too.

I was just reminded of one candidate that hasn't been brought to the table yet.

This is the man that Jimi would go to for "lessons" and technique.

Anyone know who he is?

Buddy Guy?
Junior Brown?
Shawn Lane?
Tom Morello?
Ritchie Blackmore?
David Gilmore?

well I didn't want to make my list a "pottsian" style post, so I had to leave a few off

now if we were talking Bass guitar, I have Billy Sheehan all alone (I know there are others) but he was just crazy live

Blushing

Sheehan is in the same category as Vai to me...I can appreciate the guy...it's just in a band...say...those 2 were in the SAME band!...they shine a bit brighter!

Bassists?

Think

Chris Squire
Bootsy Collins
Paul McCartney
Flea
Geddy Lee
Geezer Butler
Steve Harris
Ryan Martinie
John Taylor
Jaco Pastorius
Norwood Fisher
Graham Maby
Gene Simmons
John Paul Jones
John Entwistle
Doug Wimbish
Phil Lynott
Les Claypool

All have a special somewhere in my playing ability...I stole a bit here...grabbed a bit there...liked what they did right there and nodded in approval so much...I took a whole riff and stretched it...altered the time...threw it through a sequencer and made it mine all mine.

Dr... Les Claypool is by far the most inventive and talented bass player, by far! I am very fortunate to have a bass player in my band that can play him to a tee! We break a lot of Primus songs out in our sets and the crowds really dig them. Some even ask if they are our own songs.... silly noobs.

Nope. Not going to risk brain exploding. Entirely dependent on genre and mood of the listener at a given time. Great guitarists are like Lays chips. You can't have just one.

Wait... nobody voted for buckethead?

To add to what SOB said... you got the Gibson Les Paul sound or ya got the Fender Strat sound... and all the accompanying accoutrements to make a specific sound. What'cha wanna hear right now?

And if you broaden it to acoustic guitar then you'd have to add in someone like Andre Segovia.

Many people have been associated to being Jimi's "favorite" guitarist through the years. Billy Gibbons, Albert King, Rory Gallagher and one that has not been mentioned here but damn well should be.....Terry Kath.

Kath got screwed. He was the heart and soul of Chicago and those albums before he died are astonishingly good. The live albums are even better. Kath's mastery of his instrument was total and you could feel the heart he played with. Peter Cetera ruined that band and ruined Kath. This is one of my favorite videos on the intertubes.....The aggressive style and impatience that Kath displays waiting on the drummer is intense. PLUS...Kath had the balls to tell the British press what he (rightly) REALLY thought of Clapton..."HE SUCKS". So while I may think Jimi was the best, Jimi thought Kath was.
