The Goonies is another good one but I'm afraid he might be to old now to really enjoy it. I can't watch Rudy with him because he doesn't need to see his dad tear up and start blubbering like a baby;-)

I need to watch TKFM again one of these days.

Someone told me Movie 43 was like it. What a sad comentary on state of comedy today.

As to OP, good challenge. (My interpretation: List 3 films everyone MUST see, but may not have previously come across without some prodding or guidance.)

I liked Casablanca, Star Wars (orig...whatever episode its called now), Wizard of Oz, Godfather, and a few others but I suspect he's probably seen those.

How about:

Seven Samurai
Citizen Kane
To Kill a Mockingbird

Also some of my favorites:

The Patriot
Braveheart (Let's get the Mel Gibson GOOD movies out of the way)
McArthur & Patton
Young Guns
Heavy Metal

I second M*A*S*H,
and would add,

History of the World Part 1

A Clockwork Orange

Blazing Saddles

Animal House

A Bridge too far

Lonesome Dove

And though technically not a movie,
the HBO miniseries The Band of Brothers

"Old movies every kid should see?" How old's the kid? 57?
Many if not most of these titles are classic yet totally inappropriate for children.
Stick with G ratings, possibly PG. Animated series such as Ice Age is nice. Stooges are slap happy but a must. Almost anything old Disney...

Lots of great movies in those lists...

(Action) The Seven Samurai is excellent, even with the distraction of subtitles. Immediately after watching that, watch the American knock-off, The Magnificant Seven. Both top-notch.

(comedy) Duck Soup or A Night at the Opera: Marx Brothers at their insane best.

(Epic/historical) Ben Hur

(social commentary) Guess Who's Coming to Dinner

Ben Hur's a very good choice as well as almost any epic flick (Cleopatra, El Cid, the Robe, Khartoum, etc.) from the 40- 60's.
Musicals from that era & John Wayne cowboy flicks are good too.

My apologies- eliminate Ice Age from my list- everything else (historical epics, etc) including Watch's excellent list is A-OK except for maybe Goonies.

Btw, 15 is a young MAN not a kid!Shame on you

I know but in my head he's still the little rugrat in the blue onesie pajamas who somehow got around the baby gate and into the kitchen where he found the cats gravity feeder and was shoving cat kibble into his mouth like it was candy;-)

For Bogie fans, aside from the obvious film noir entries, The Caine Mutiny and The African Queen.

Musicals, Singin' in the Rain, Sound of Music, The King and I, Wizard of Oz, West Side Story, I could go on.

Film Noir, Double Indemnity, The Killers, The Blue Dahlia and Richard Widmark in Kiss of Death.

Any Danny Kaye movie, particularly, The Court Jester.

Most all of my other favorites have already been mentioned...Punk!

^ Mel Brooks- that's some good brainy slapstick. Some real classics there too especially the musicals but, in all honesty, when I was 15 I preferred action flicks over musicals and mysteries. I grew into those genres eventually though.

The only thing i remember from that movie (i think it's from 12 chairs) is when one guy tells the other, "you aren't worth spitting on" and the other guy responds, "well you are" and then spits in his face... I was like 8 years old when I saw it...

I just realized I still have this movie... on BETA cassette...

Filmed in Hawaii. My Dad was a carpenter and worked on the set. When the movie was released he took my Mom and I to see it. There's a scene where John Wayne is standing in a PT boat and my Dad said he built the bridge in the shot. He was quite proud of that. I should make my kids watch it and tell them that story.

Mr. Jones listed A River Runs Through It. I can't believe I forgot to add that one. Not sure if I'm ready to watch it with him though because that's another tear jerker that makes me miss my dad real bad. My dad died before any of his grandchildren were born and that hurts... he would have LOVED being a grandfather. So far I'm thinking

Slap Shot
Spaceballs
and either Patton, Tora Tora Tora, or Stalag 17. Can't decide. We've watched Band of Brothers together already and I definitely want a good WW2 movie. I'm going to save Schindler's list for another night when that is the only movie we watch so we can talk about it.

Out of all the "25 or so" I listed....

The most thought provoking one

By a mile is

The Swimmer
With Burt Lancaster

It was never popular..
Rarely on TV
Very hard to buy cheaply....
Some guys on Ebay want $150-225 just for the DVD.

THEY CAN BLOW ME
as teedubya would say....
