Holy Crap, I totally forgot about him. He'd edge out Tom Chambers as my 6th Man on "Team Foh Sho".

Jamestown, Big Ups to Clyde(my favorite of ALL-Time) but imagine if they traded him and drafted MJ instead of Sam Bowie. Porter,MJ, Williams, Robinson & Duckworth. With Kersey and whomever they would have gotten in the Drexler trade. Rip City Dynasty

Ok, here's my real squad with the players in regards to their "real" respected positions:

PG Oscar Robinson
SG Michael Jordan
SF Lebron James
PF Karl Malone
C Bill Russell

Bench:
Magic Johnson
Kobe Bryant
Elgin Baylor
Tim Duncan
Kareem Abdul Jabbar

Coach Red Auerbach

and the sad part is we didn't get to see Sabonis until the twilight years

But if people want to list a white team, I don't know how you can omit Bob Petit, Tommy Heinsohn, John Stockton, and Kevin Freakin' McHale!
Special mention to Jerry Lucas, Jack Twyman, Steve Nash, Billy Cunningham...and Bobby Jones for DEfense. plenty more.

Oscar ain't getting nearly enough love.

so Bill Russell is at best 3rd team? The greatest team player in the history of team sports? 11 Titles in 13 years, one year lost because he broke his ankle? He can't make varsity or JV?

I'm not really taking it seriously, there's nothing more uncertain than these lists. A little early on Durant, but you just might end up correct about him.

I'll admit to a bias on this one. I was a huge 76'ers fan in the 60's, when they had Wilt, Dave Gambee, Wally Jones, Chet Walker, Hal Greer, Luke Jackson, and Billy Cunningham. As a 76'ers fan, one was obligated to absolutely hate the Celtics. I listened to many a battle between Wilt and Russell on WCAU.

I Will admit Russell was a rebounding machine 2nd only to Wilt, but I gave Jabbar the nod as most do not give him his due. His sky hook was a devastating shot the likes of which we will never see again.

Here is my list:

Center-Who Cares?
PF-Who Cares?
SF-Who Cares?
SG-Who Cares?
PG-Who Cares?

The NBA is a joke. College ball is much better IMO.

Hey, we hated Philly right back! But I did list Cunningham, and Bobby Jones too, in post 15. And I loved (hated, but loved) Greer and his free throw jump shot.

Rebounding for sure, but Russell was a defensive innovator and tried to direct blocked shots to team mates instead of the upper deck. He and Auerbach created the fast break, the success of which depended upon the rebound and the pinpoint pass to mid court.

Remember, Russell won virtually all of those titles while Wilt was playing, as was Nate Thurmond, Walt Ballamy, Zelmo Beatty (briefly) and others...all of whom might have won titles IF NOT for Russell. Heck, before he went to the 76ers, Wilt played with Thurmond on the SF Warriors after they left Philly. Zero titles.

Jabbar lost once to (like 6'8") Dave Cowens! and more or less split with Robert Parrish. I'd rank Jabbar 3, Walton 4th.

But Bill Russell stands alone as the greatest winner in the history of TEAM sports. And you get paid to win, not look stylish.

College basketball has pretty much sucked for the last 15-20 years since the one and done rule came into effect. What college did Le Bron play for?

Rodman and Pippen, Stockton, good as they were, do not belong on any list without Oscar, West, Baylor...

Stockton has the most steals and assists in NBA history. It's a toss between him and Magic as to who is the best point guard ever. To me Pippen is the second best small forward ever. Lebron is truly positionless. Rodman is as good of a defender and rebounder as there has ever been. Robertson was amazing and he was hard to leave off. Though West and Baylor were generational players they did not defend like Pippen, not even close. Defensively Pippen shut down whoever needed shut down 1 through 4. Defensively Rodman shut down 3 through 5. Russell never averaged big points yet he is the best center ever due to his rebounding and defensive dominance. Though Kareem was great, it would be silly to say he was better than Russell. Saying West and Baylor before Stockton and Pippen is just as silly. Robertson, ok worth debate. Rodman is as unique of a player as the league has seen and evaluating his career takes just as unique of a perspective.

It was *really* tough to narrow it down to just 5. So many great players, so few spots.

I was an avid Lakers fan growing up so it pained me whenever Russell got the better of Chamberlain so when it was time to pick a Center, it hadda be Bill. Just win, baby!

As far as Kobe goes, he's not the power forward I was looking for and Larry Legend had the SF spot sewed up a l-o-n-g time ago.

I don't disagree with your reasoning, but felt I had to shoehorn Kobe in there somewhere. Can't in good conscience bench Jordan, Bird, or Johnson so Tim had to go. It may be a bit awkward in the preseason, but they'll adjust to the new setup

every player you name is considered very good or great.

But stats don't define the greatest, though if they did than hard to knock Oscar out of point guard, he nearly averaged a triple double until his last couple of fat body years. Or Wilt! Averaged 50 a game one season. Led in assists another.
Rebounds...fugggetaboutit.

Baylor was the first of the lineage that led to Dr. J and then Jordan.

Jerry West was not just a great shooter but one of the great defenders as well. They don't call ya Mr. Basketball and use you on the logo if you're just pretty good or generational. He'd have been amazing today if born in 1996.

Pippen and Rodman fall into the very good player category, excellent complimentary pieces on the right team at the right time, much like some guys on the Russell years like Tom Sanders. But there are many I'd have to consider as all time best well before them though.
Bob Pettit
Kevin McHale
Rick Barry
Walt Frazier
Willis Reed
Isaiah Thomas
Nate Archibald
John Havlicek
Wes Unseld
Moses Malone
Elvin Hayes
just off the top of my head.

We do have to account for different eras though. I've always looked at it this way...watching old b&w tapes of Cousy wearing old fashioned sneakers and stuff is misleading. But I believe he and probably every great from previous eras would be the best in future eras had they been born later and afforded the same training techniques, diet, liberalized rules, etc.
