They are within a few miles of each other. There is a unique micro climate at the western edge of lake Ontario about 10 miles wide. The lake itself moderates the winter time temperatures. Also there is a shelf of land that has schist soil and a bed of limestone. All of that makes for wonderful wine growing conditions. I bet you enjoy the Vidal, it is yummy to say the least.

a friend brings back a bottle of icewine for me every Christmas when he goes to Canada to see his family...they aren't inexpensive. This one was like 25 for the little 375!

Afraid to jinx the local football team, but I might save it for a joyous celebration dessert with cigar next Sunday night.

^ A really good bottle. The first Bourbon barrel conditioned wine I enjoy. You can slightly taste the Bourbon. It adds a richness to the wine without overpowering it. 18% alcohol.

2010 Serra Vineyards Pinto Noir. 14.2% nose shows boozyness, but the taste doesn't show what you smell. Blackberry, currents and a nice acidity that paired with the dinner of mashed gold potatoes, broccoli and grilled USDA Prime tri-tip steaks. (200 case production)

After dinner I opened a bottle of 2009 Cricket Hill Winery Cab Franc (probaby my favorite varietal) pissed my lady off because she's dieting and they don't open back up until april. VERY SMALL production, and Duane (the owner/blender) didn't want to do a pure varietal of the Cab Franc (he does right bank Bordeaux) but his wife made him.....it's goddamm spectacular. Dark cherry, bold presence and just a hit of booze on the finish. His Rendeavous 2010 is another of our favorites, it's a blend. This next season his first Rose will be ready, we're probably going to buy a case. He doesn't do memberships, and his prices are 20-29$ per bottle, very good for the quality and definition of small batch.

had some pleasantly spicy Vietnamese food for dinner earlier so I'm now finishing off the evening with a (I'll type all I can read)

2016 Kreuznacher Kronenberg Riesling Spatlese

obviously German, delicious sweetness, other stuff on the label...Pradikatswein NAHE and Privatkkellerei St. Antonius

Spey? Pretty sure I paid peanuts for this desserty pour, wonderful after the spicy meal.

So German wines are essentially graded as Kabinett, Spatlese, Auslese, Beerenauslese, Trokenbeerenauslese, and Eiswein. There are multiple passes through the vineyard. Every pass through the grapes have more sugar. The more sugar the juice has the better the wine. The reason German Riesling goes great with spicy food is the acidity. It cuts through the heat. Also they have fairly low alcohol levels. Mosel wines are about 8%, Rhine wines are about 8.5%. In the Rhine there are 3 distinct regions. Rheinegau, Rheinehessen, Pfaltz, and Nahe. They each have their own distinct terror. The interesting thing is though usually German Rieslings have residual sugar they can be made bone dry. You could for example have a Troken Spatlese. The alcohol levels will go up accordingly. My 2 cents. I am not well versed on German wines.

Pradikaswein means German wine of the highest quality. Saint Antonius is the producer. Kreuzhacher Kronenberg is their name for that particular bottling.

That wine should retail from $8 to $13 a bottle before tax. Nahe wines are a bargain.

$8 sounds familiar...guess no theft was involved.

I think it needs rest, hotter than last release...the Dark Night is good to go though, and their Sangiovese is quickly becoming a go to. We broke down and became members last year. Wish our favorite micro place (his biggest release is 200 cases) did memberships.

2012 Anciano Tempranillo

It was good, but I felt like it may be close to aging out. I’ve got a 2010 and a 2007 that I probably need to get though soon.

Three Pears Pinot Gris 2015 (California)

probably have had a bottle or two each of the last few years. Not bad with steelhead trout and baby zukes tonight, but not the best match I've had with it.

Could not find Roderer Le Hermitage our favorite bubbly in Prescott so we settled for a Conumdrun Blanc de Blanc to celebrate our 27th. Pretty good bubbly with pear and citrusy/tropical notes.

KRIS Pinot Grigio

Not big on white wines but took the kid and my mom out for sushi since she will be away for Mother's Day and it paired rather well.

Blends (meritage) are by far my favorite reds. The various grapes have strengths and weaknesses that when combined make for a better whole if combined correctly.

With the woman and kids at Ledger David tasting room, they just released their first Rosé we each had a glass. Very clean finish, a touch sweet and dry, a lot of honeydew melon. We got a bottle to go. They used Sangiovese grapes, that's a new Rosé for me. Now we're drinking a bottle of cab franc, it's there recent one (2015) that was released that I mentioned was "hot". It's VERY drinkable now, like chocolate after that Rosé.

2016 Novellum Chardonnay, Roussillon, France.

Nose of cara cara oranges, and white nectarines. Clean refreshing, layered, and complex. Flavors of white peaches, bosc pears, and a hint of navel oranges. Medium in body and nice finish with mostly white pears and the faintest note of apricots.

2017 Josefina Rose, syrah from Paso Robles.

think it was 5 or 6 bucks at Trader Joes. Worth double...HA!
Probably will go back for a few more to spread over the Summer, just a bit of sweetness makes it a nice sipper, but still good with a spicy dish.
