I recently concocted a pipe tobacco of my own. It is heavy on Latakia, with some Perique, Oriental and Virginia tobacco. I was hoping to "copy" Penzance but it isn't close. On the other hand, I think it is quite good, at least for a first shot. I need some help. I would like three (3) EXPERIENCED pipe smokers to try it and tell me what I can do to improve it. Please PM me and I will send it to you at my cost, including postage (@ 2-3 ounces.) NO MOOCHES PLEASE and, if you don't like Latakia, please don't contact me.! I need some input. Thanx guys. Angel

Or Jamie/ZRX. I'm still kinda noobish on pipe tobacco but your English-Oriental sounds good. Does this count as a mooch?

Still a N00b at that too!

Desolbones IMHO is without a doubt one of the best tasters I have ever herfed with............and he digs latakia, which I still don't understand.PM him and I can assure he will help out.He does some blending of his own....maybe y'all could swap casseroles or at least the ingredient list and measurements.

Shameless name dropping post:

When I met Joe Lankford one night at a Seattle Pipe Club meeting, he laughingly said, "Don't get started blending! Only took me nearly 40 years to (inhale forcibly) at it, and it doesn't look like you've got 40 years!"

But for those of you that can do it, have fun. My only "blend" is the tin of scraps and crap that's too little for another bowlful or cigarillos that bust apart traveling. No idea what's in it by now other than NO flavored pipe baccy.

I tried it a few times and gave up. Smoking the pipe tailed off several years ago and I spent many years looking for the perfect tobacco.

Thanks Q, but I don't want to restart that pipe tobacco quest. The better the tobacco, the more I smoked, often over a dozen pipes a day. Now I smoke only cheap tobacco and only when I don't have the time for a cigar.

Up to you, but I enjoy both of them (pipes and cigars.) The pipe relaxes me more for reasons I don't really understand and nothing, absolutely nothing can beat the taste of a good cigar.

My favorites were and continue to be Staghorn mixed with honey clover. I think that is a *inderbox blend.

Paddys Irish runs a close second.

I rotated the tobaccos depending on mood, and what was for dinner.

Now days I am just hoping to find something I can afford by the pound for long voyages.

I'm not sure I understand why anyone who enjoys pipe tobacco wouldn't want to dabble in a little blending. I smoke mostly VPB blends I concoct from leaf I buy from various sources and, sure I've ruined good tobacco time to time, but I've hit on a balance that usually tastes quite good to me. Also, being one who tires of any one tobacco if I smoke it constantly, it allows for plenty of variety in my smoking "diet". Have I blended anything that is close to my favorites? Nope. It's true that to really nail a recipe takes pretty deep understanding of tobacco chemistry but what I come up with makes me happy.
Mileage may vary.

I don't blend or even mix tobaccos. I do tweak some milder blends if they seem weak or boring. Any tweaking involves some bulk Perique, Latakia or Tambolaka. Haven't had the 'urge' to mix any of those three together. The more I read about blending and pipe tobacco in general the greater my need to 'learn' more before starting to blend. I wanna know how to swim before diving in.
Herbs blend sample was in the mail box, thank you. We're supposed to have rain tomorrow, should free up some time to sit on the porch and enjoy a bowl as opened. It's a little moist, not enough to adhere to itself but still springy.
I plan on starting with a small capacity brier, if it smokes well I'll set enough out to dry for 2/3 more bowls as it dries. Then move up to a larger bowl and vary the rh. If there is still enough left I'd like to try the same inna morta davida. Sorry I slipped there for a moment. Hope to have something ready to post by mid next week. Don't know whose leg Ron's pulling (both of us?) but I don't think I have that developed a palate. Guess he got impressed with Greek Style grape leaves or chocolate graham from cigars or over ripe mango from Erinmore......was I pulling his leg? Regardless, Thanks again Herb, I too am looking forward to my input.

Interesting (to me) that you bought up the aroma. When I was packing it, the aroma came through the sealed package. The thought occurred to me that the postal service would notice it and think that I was shipping pot to you (guys.) I had visions of DEA agents and SWAT teams breaking into my home and arresting my wife and me. WHEW!!!! Anxious

Got a little feedback from Chaz on my pipe tobacco:

"Smokey sweetness. Smooth with little bite. I notice a little goopy build up when I cleaned out me bowl. "

I don't think that this was bad considering that I am no expert and this was my first try. It was a lot of fun. I hope Chaz forgives me for posting his reply but he made me feel proud of myself and I wanted to share his response.

So now that you are getting reviews can us "pipeweed" n00bs start shamelessly mooching? Sounds like an interesting blend as I gravitate to the English/Orientals

I've done the briar pipe bowls in 3 levels of moisture, things got hectic around the house and I've put off the morta pipe bowls till I can sit back relax & pay attention. I think I'll have enough left to try a coupla bowls inna cob. I waiting to post results till I can work in the differences/similarities by pipe and by Rh, could show some interesting variations. If I don't post something by next Fri some should gently remind me....the 2x4 will beside the front door.
I can say that I've gotten a fine very light gray ash from each bowl so far and the Rh changed the profile of each. Greg

Cripes, have fun guys. It's just pipe tobacco, not molecular gastronomy for crying in the sink! I rely on what my palate tells me is good and my blends don't rely on chemical analysis and mass approval. I'm the only one needs to like it, can't imagine why I'd need anyone else's approval unless I was planning on marketing it.
But, do carry on gents, you're cracking me up...

I was pleasantly surprised, I was expecting it to be put together with some of the cheap no name bulk you can get on some sites. The smokey flavor was a little less powerful than what I expected from the smell, which I'm cool with. The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the cut, it's a little on the fine side for how I like to pack. Other than that I'd say you did a pretty decent job. Now I'ma shut up and keep smokin it!

"We" do it because we're interested in making a better pipe tobacco. I did it, not to market it, but to get other's thoughts on how to improve it, given that everyone's tastes differ. And, people always get a good laugh over things they're too dumb to understand. horse

I've had comments from people I know that it was too strong; so I guess that proves that everyone's taste differs a little. Sometimes I too, find it a bit strong and then, at other times, mild. I guess it has chamaeleon-like qualities. The "cut" i can't change, but that is a personal desire. Please don't "shut up." I need all the input I can get.

Oh, man, you should take your act on stage! Funny! Please, rookie, explain to me with your vast knowledge why you think you need other people's opinions if you are not marketing what you're blending...unless you just don't trust your own palate and need verification...? think someone else can tell you how something will taste to your palate....that is, given you understand everyone's palate DOES differ....maybe I'm just too dumb to know I shouldn't be able to mix a few leaves together to get what I like...fog

I never claimed that I had a vast knowledge; quite the opposite in fact if you can read, which is highly doubtful. I value other people's (except yours, of course) opinions. I do understand everyone's palate differs and I am taking that into account. And yes, you are too dumb to know but I guess you know that already. horse

Just one more thing and I will let this die. For no particular reason except perhaps to be obnoxious,, hoyodude barged in on a private transaction that I and 3 other people were involved in. He made stupid, insulting remarks for no particular reason I can discern. If he, or anyone else thinks I will stand by and ignore it they are sadly mistaken.

At least you are funny. He is not.

Man, the hits just keep on a'comin! YOU are HILARIOUS!! And, by the way, if you want to conduct private business why would you do so on a public forum? Kind of defeats the whole "private " thing, no? I mean if you get your poor widdle feelings hurt so easy...well, maybe you just need to grow up a little, son.

Ladies, ladies. Take it easy. Sheesh. Some guy wants to try something different. Maybe he's proud of what he made. Either way, if it's not your business then why are you taking so much interest. Just let the noobs play in their sandbox and ignore them like all the other old farts.
