Dishonest Cigar Ads

Let's face it guys; all of us, at one time or another have been sucked in by dishonest ads, either online or from a catalog. Our mouth watered when we looked at the airbrushed photo and we salivated even more when we read the ad copy. Then we bought it and discovered it was a dog rocket. When I was a noob I got sucked in by Puros Indios and Indian Tabac. I was also hornswoggled by Cuban Delights, Mr. B, Quorum and a few others, mostly "house" brands, "seconds" and overruns. Then there were the "samplers" that always had some unsellable sticks amongst the good ones. Lets not forget the cigars that some manufacturer had somehow "forgotten" in one of his warehouses for years and is just dying for you to help him take it off his hands at unheard of prices. Last, but not least, are those cigars that you are told were made from Cuban tobacco that was shipped here just before the embargo. So if confession is good for the soul, how were you screwed in the past? Boo hoo!

Black Pearl. What a fuqn joke.
The double perfecto was a favorite. When whoever stopped making LA Perla Habana back when and it switched they bore zero resemblance.
Victor Sinclair....believed the ad on those dung dipped dog or rockets way back when. Yuck! Sick

I've smoked a few bad cigars, but I can't member which ones they were. For the most part I shy away from ad copy when making my selections. I tend to rely on word of mouth from people I trust. Also, I've found it pays to stick with the *major* brands from the manufacturers regarded as the tops in the industry who have been around for a while and consistently produce top product. It would seem they probably get the better tobacco and the *boutiques* get the leftovers.

The worst one I have had was Cuban Rounds, tasted like I would imagine horse $hit tasting. I also was not impressed with RP Sungrown. I have a couple more resting right now, I am hoping it was just my taste that day wasnt ready for it or was off.

Everyone has their own tastes. Mine have pretty high end for a long time, I had the Series 55 in a Toro samer. The maduro are dyed and the sun grown was very forgettable for me.

How long does one have to walk around this planet to know that any advertising is pro product, supposed good points are stressed and shortcomings are never discussed. Caveat emptor.

Victor Sinclair makes crap, if you get a good one it's probably one in a hundred.

Announcing a new release or just keeping your name recognition out there are legitimate forms of cigar advertising. Ignore flowery descriptions and write ups on Internet cigar websites.

As long as one buys the bulk of their cigars at a deep discount they can continue to expect the same thing. You get what you pay for. That's not to say you can finds some real gems out there. You just have to sift through tons of pay dirt to fine an ounce of gold.

Ad copy?
phfftt!....
Have I purchased crap cigars in the past?
Of course, when I was inexperienced.
But never again, as I have a vetting "system".

There's a handful of cigar web sites and Forums that I peruse regularly, where their members do "reviews" of cigars.
Over the years, I have come to "trust" a dozen or so these reviewers.

For example:
Quite some time ago, Pro mentioned here that he smokes lots of Kristoff Ligero Maduro Robustos.
I had not tried one.
I know, from several sources, that Pro doesn't smoke crap. Still, I need more info before committing to buy.
So then I went and checked out that cigar with my "trusted" reviewers from the other said web sites.
Pretty much universally praised.
That cigar is now a regular in my rotation.
BTW, the Kristoff Sumatra is amazing as well.
Good thing I know where and how to get them cheap.......RIP DP.

Here's an honest one from the mothership on Gerants Golden Siesta: "Gerant, like Rip Van Winkle, should have stayed asleep much longer, for smoking this offering will make you wish you were unconscious. Frankly, in comparison with other legendary sleepyheads Gerant is downright Olympian. Indeed, he must have been taking a Golden Siesta at the blending table because these 7"x50 Churchills are so mild and straightforward as to lack any hint of flare. If airballs that are so mild and mellow as to be void of any complexity are what you're looking for - or you want to glom something off that looks good to your moocher buddies...then these Connecticut-wrapped cigars will fit the bill. If you are looking for actual taste, try something else."

I have trained myself to identify and immediately ignore the ads in mags and newspapers. I have to admit that every once in a while a creative one gets my attention, but for the most part my eyes skip over. Its getting harder and harder to do.

Getting cigars based on ads is like picking a movie by reading the box.
They all sound like the best flick ever made. If it said complete waste of time, this is and hour and 30 minutes of your life you'll never get back it would defeat the purpose.
He'll that one I might watch just for being honest. Nah, fuq that chit.
A turds a turd. Cheapo cigars and cheapo booze you get what you pay for.

I like the ad copy on the super cheap dog rockets that pretty much only talk up the cheap price as a virtue of the cigar.

Those are the closest to honesty in advertising as it gets.

The place I've been buying from lately doesn't have descriptions, just the name, sometimes a picture, and a price. Realized while the ad description may be off, at least listing the blend makeup and strength helps me choose.

Then there is Duque which, in the mothership catalog tells you "...it sure beats a sharp stick to the eye." Makes you want to go and buy a couple of bundles.

I've smoked them and they definitely beat a sharp stick to the eye. They also make a Cognac infused variety that a friend of mine described as having the flavor of an old sweaty sock. I did not try them.

Don Rafael cigars are premium mild and smooth smokes, built for Everyman’s everyday enjoyment at bargain basement prices.

Don Rafael Gold is the newest addition to the Victor Sinclair family. Deliciously mild to medium-bodied, with a slightly sweetened tip....the best kind of tip if you ask me....you could smoke these long into the night. Made from all Dominican long-fillers, Don Rafael Gold is finished off with a pristine Ecuador wrapper. Smooth, mellow, and satisfying with a touch of spice. Smoke it any time of day....and don't forget to stock up!

I guess it is an opinion.....is it dishonest? Better than a stick to the eye!

I have tried them, as well as the Gurkha Cognac infused. Trust me on this one--old sweaty socks taste much better and are less expensive. Sarcasm

I won an auction for 100 Fields of gold. Supposedly great everyday sticks. Dirt cheap for sure. Figured what the hell why not. Opened one up and found a damn spring used as filler. What the???? Never will I buy a cheap cigar again. CI and cigarbid should ban this piece of crap cigar.

CI and Cigarbid are here to make a profit. If someone buys a turd for more than their net cost, then they succeeded in those transactions.

FWIW, if you chase turds like this:

Quote:
Fields of Gold has managed to do the impossible in this day and age… make a cigar that can be had for just 69 cents apiece! Handcrafted in the Dominican Republic using a golden, Connecticut wrapper, these mild and creamy coronas are packaged attractively in massive boxes of 100. Whether you break open a box during a gathering and distribute them amongst your fellow cigar enthusiasts or hoard them all to yourself as an everyday indulgence, Fields of Gold is worth every penny.

Then you can expect them it to taste like this:

Starfish

You are better off buying a pouch of Black & Milds.

I'm guessing that in addition to being new to these forums, you are also new to cigar smoking. It's ok as at one time we were all in your shoes. I would suggest that you bookmark halfwheel.com. It's one of the better cigar review sites.

If you are gonna stick with this pasttime, I'd also forget the notion that you are going to find many sub $4 smokes that are remarkable enough to have a second one.

I can’t recall ever succumbing to the virtues of a cigar in an ad but iffin’ I did, it would have happened close to 10 years ago. These days, if and when I read an ad, I just chuckle at the b.s. they’re spouting.

^Yeah. I still fall for this, but within limits. I've realized that the super cheap stuff is super cheap for a reason. I still like smoking daily smokes or yardgars+ looking for something that I really like that isn't expensive.

When I was smoking cigars the first time, I tried Duque, and Puros Indios, Pirates Gold (still have some, anyone want to trade?), Oro Cubano, etc.
