I came across 12 humydrole by Atmos humidity bricks. They are 4x8x2 with the metal wraps. I think they are really cool looking but I'm curious if they are troublesome and not effective at keeping a steady RH. I can't find any solid information on how well these things work or what the are worth.

Can you fellas help me on this?

They are a soft ceramic, right?

If so, they should work well, they are like the ceramic humidifiers that were used in humidors a century ago. You just dunk them in water for 15 minutes or so, shake off the surface moisture and stick them in the humidor.

I'm not sure what RH they will balance out at, you'll have to test that yourself.

As for value, probably only worth something to a collector.

Yes, those are the ones. They have the brass metal wraps and appear to be in great condition. The seller is asking $50 for the set of 12. Are these available new anymore? Just want to make sure they are worth the trial effort. I like the nostalgia of them for sure.

I have never used them before. I know nothing about them. I have no idea if they will work. But I say... what the hell go for it; I like nostalgia too!

Seems to me if they were as or more effective than other currently available humidifiers they would still be used and in demand. By themselves they add humidity but don't control or disperse it so they may work fine as long as they are used along with beads, etc.

I was curious so I looked and found this:

Humydrole Clay Elements
Ultimate Cigar Protector humidification elements from Atmos Products use the company’s time-tested Humydrole clay-based technology. Originally developed in 1925 specifically for tobacco use, Humydrole features an improved formulation to automatically provide proper moisture for cigars and tobaccos. The Ultimate ($50 retail) can properly maintain humidity levels for 50–125 cigars; the Junior Ultimate ($40 retail) between 20–40 cigars; and Round ($10 retail) between 15–25 cigars. Humydrole consists of inert organic and inorganic compounds that are harmless to tobacco; the material will not drip once excess water has been drained off, and it appears dark brown in color when wet and light brown when dry, visually alerting users when additional water is needed. Normal useful life is three to five years depending on usage. Also available is Enhancer Solution, specifically designed to enhance the performance of Humidroyle material.

I wouldn't put too much stock in the lifespan claims. These things are basically just a piece of porous masonry, nothing to really wear out. But, if they didn't tell you that they have a lifespan, they wouldn't have much repeat business.

I don't believe any of those are the "gold brick". I'm not sure you can even get these new anymore.
