Thanks to BOTL CptVimes I think this deserves a new thread. Go to this link and within a minute or two you can send letters to all of THE POLITICIANS in your state with just a zip code and a few bits of information.

http://capwiz.com/cigarrights/issues/alert/?alertid=62606471

Know anyplace else you can post outside CBid? Share the link. Surprisingly and sadly there's a lot of ignorance about this, a lot of cigar smokers are completely unaware of what's taking place.

This is my soapbox, read it or ignore it, but use the link and spread it everywhere else you can.

This is exactly the way the FDA wants it. To exploit ignorance and lack of knowledge to further their agenda. Money to maintain their existence. Now that they aren't government funded they aggressively pursue whatever keeps their money flowing.
Attacking whatever is unpopular, or unfashionable is low hanging fruit.
There are countless TRUE threats to the helth and well being of America that go unaddressed every day, but a cigar is where they have chosen to use funds and resources that are surely better spent elsewhere.
The FDA has very little interest in "protecting" the American public. If they did they wouldn't for example fast track drugs to help people that end up doing more harm and end up killing or maiming hundreds that put misplaced trust in the FDA.

I've heaRd back from my Reps here in indiana. The less than helpful senator's sent me very genric "I'll keep that in mind" replies. My congressman, Toddler Rokita, however did send an encouraging reply as follows:

Thank you for contacting me regarding H.R. 662, the Traditional Cigar Manufacturing and Small Business Jobs Preservation Act of 2015. It is good to hear from you.
As you may know, H.R. 662 was introduced by Representative Bill Posey of Florida on February 2, 2015. I am a proud cosponsor of this legislation. This legislation was referred to the House Energy and Commerce Committee. H.R. 662 would exempt traditional large and premium cigars from regulation by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Additionally, these cigars would be exempted from user fees assessed on tobacco products by the FDA. Please be assured I will continue fighting to pass this legislation.
Again, thank you for contacting me, and please stay in touch as I continue fighting for all people so they can build better lives for themselves and their families.

Sincerely,

Todd Rokita
Member of Congress

Anyone here from Florida should contact Bill Posey to encourage H.R. 662 as well as any member of Congress. The only way to change things is with action.

I went through the process and signed the canned letters and sent them out.

Got this canned response back from Ted Cruz's office.... d'oh!

Dear Bennie,
Thank you for sharing your thoughts regarding the Federal Adjustment of Income Rates Act. Staying connected with constituents is crucial to my service in the U.S. Senate. Hearing your thoughts helps shape my perspective, and I appreciate you taking the time to write. As this issue progresses, I will certainly keep your views in mind.
Thank you again for sharing your views with me. Please feel free to contact me in the future about any issue important to your family. It is an honor to serve you and the people of Texas.
For Liberty,

Senator Ted Cruz

Of course, he was busy trying to become president so I guess he got my letter mixed up, you know, with some other dufus... Anxious

I think we should argue that we are a protected class. Cigar smokers are routinely ostracized and marginalized from mainstream social interactions and thereby are denied the benefits freely available to non-cigar smokers. Cigar smokers are also endangered primarily due to prejudice against cigars. Cigar smokers do not choose to smoke cigars - they are born this way. It is discriminatory to compel them to stop smoking. Any action that reduces access to cigars violates their basic human rights.

Here is the response I received from my Senator:

Thank you for contacting me with your thoughts regarding the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) proposal to regulate cigar and vapor products. I agree with your concern regarding the FDA’s overreaching regulatory authority and welcome the opportunity to respond.

On May 5, 2016, the FDA finalized its rule extending regulatory authority over premium cigars and vapor products. Under the final rule, vapor and premium cigar products on the market since February 15, 2007 require pre-market approval of the design and level of nicotine before sale. Minors are now banned from buying the newly reclassified products.

The FDA first proposed its deeming rule regulating vapor products and premium cigars in 2014. Finalization of the rule was postponed by stakeholders with a number of concerns related to the FDA’s vast expansion of its regulatory authority. Congress already has a regulatory framework in place for the introduction of any new tobacco product, and nearly every state already bans sales of e-cigarettes to minors. The FDA’s rule implementation would burden small businesses already compliant with preexisting safety mechanisms.

With this concern in mind, Senator Bill Nelson (D-Florida) introduced S. 441, the Traditional Cigar Manufacturing and Small Business Jobs Preservation Act, on February 10, 2015. S. 441 would exempt traditional large and premium cigars from the FDA’s rule and from user fees assessed on tobacco products by the FDA. S. 441 continues to await consideration in the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions.

Rest assured, I will continue to support legislation that opposes unnecessary and burdensome federal regulations. The federal government should not step in and take away regulatory authority that is traditionally and appropriately left to the states.

Again, thank you for contacting me. Please feel free to contact me in the future on this or other matters of interest to you.
