so I smoke the corona size (mostly) and i like the skinnier rg's so when i saw the obsidian and pinar del rio reserva half coronas on the bid i was all over it .........

the problem is they smell funny and not in a good way. i handed it off to my buddy who worked at a local b and m and he winced as did the next 2 guys i was hanging with........ they both agreed.

what your experience with these?

...and also are these the same cigar (other tuan the packaging)? they have the same tin, same label same size, same nasty smell, same green sticker etc

thanks and cheers!

Never had the half-corona tin size, but I have much experience with the more normal sizes of PDR stuff including the Obsidian black, Obsidian White Noise and Reserva Limitada.

My experience is that some are great upon receipt, and some are not ("off" smell, bad burn/taste) but become just as great after some humidor time.

I suspect this may be PDR "shipping young", after which the boxes hit the CI warehouse and some get sent to customers immediately (and still require more humidor time) while others spend quite awhile in the CI warehouse before going to customers (and don't require more humidor time).

I have no problem resting them for a long while, when they need it. They're a HUGE bang-for-buck value and I have a very large cigar collection, so giving them extra time doesn't bother me at all.

If the tobacco was to young, it probably would be an ammonia smell.

The previous poster who mentioned PDR shippiing young probably hit the nail on the head. I had heard a while back that PDR had some internal strife and half their sales reps quit. That led to cash flow problems and PDR pushing product out the door to high volume outlets because they didn't have reps to service the brick and mortar shops. Don't know if all this is true or not, although I'm pretty sure the part about the sales reps is. If it is true, it would explain a lot.

Kind of sad, actually, because I always thought PDR could be good value at CBid prices (not so much at retail :-). At the moment I'm smoking a A. Flores Gran Riserva Toro -- the one in the cedar wrap with the red ribbon on the foot -- and I always thought these were a steal when you could get a 5'er for 15 bucks. They made the same cigar in a tin of half coronas and I used to like those for a quick smoke.

Some of the other PDR stuff never made the grade for me. Obsidian, in particular, always smelled and tasted a bit off ... not bad, exactly, just not quite right.

PDR is hit or miss for me. I've had good ones, and bad ones. Aging is key.

Meh, don't want to waste space in my humidors with that crap... especially if I have to age it.

Rule of thumb for me, if I don't like em when they're young, I definitely won't like em when they're old.

Oh, not sure why pudding is answering your question seeing as how he never had an Obsidian in the tin... I mean, seems pretty hypocritical to me, responding without actually having an answer for the OP.
