U.S. Intel: Russians "Own" Trump. Birtherism?

U.S. Intelligence report says Russians have compiled a host a damaging data on Trump that can potentially compromise his actions when he is the President. Is this a birther-like subterfuge designed to distract, undermine, delegitimize and mobilize opposition against the newly elected President? Irony...

I don't know what's up here but I do watch enough politics to know you can see each party's talking points and buzz words early in the news cycle and count on repetition from various individuals along the way. Predictable.

It is interest to me Trump and the Russians are talking with the same talking points and at times the exact same verbiage. Odd.

Witch hunt. Is that a common Russian term?

It could just be a continuation of their psyopps attempts to weaken whomever is our leader which looked like it would be hill and now is Trump.

We need to support our own and recognize who and what putin and his government is.

Interesting. Wonder what the truth is.

You'll find out soon enough, as there should be a slew of experts on here who can answer that.

I don't get what they're talking about the intel that the russians are at fault for this is completely baseless. They're only pulling IP information; anyone can spoof an IP to any country it's not hard to do.

Al is this the report you are referring to:

https://www.theguardian.com/media/2017/jan/10/buzzfeed-publishes-donald-trump-russia-documents-ethics-questions

If so, it's been debunked.

"These allegations are completely unverified, and as BuzzFeed acknowledged some are unverifiable."

Washington Post media writer Erik Wemple lamented BuzzFeed's "ridiculous rationale" for publication.

"It is unverified -- meaning that it requires further investigation," Wemple wrote. "BuzzFeed has started that process and pledges to continue pursuing it. So why post the documents now?"

But would anyone expect anything more from CNN and it's partners???

Abrig I wouldn't be so fast with that. It needs to play out. I don't think it's the guardian, buzzfeed or the post driving this. I also don't think it's necessarily the trump camp doing anything wrong or that the trump russian dossier has been verified to have any merit or lack of it. I also don't think it was the intel community leaking it which is the Trump deflection.

My understanding is an oppo research firm doing work for both campaigns became concerned about russian actions prior to the election, brought it to the attention of MI6 who looked in to it and became even more concerned and brought it to the attention of a republican senator who brought it to the FBI and other intel agencies.

At this point my take isnt that Trump did anything wrong, or that the Russians have anything real. i think at this point all it amounts to is the Russians floating that out there and our intel wanting to make sure Trump is aware of it. The leak is unfortunate but per the reporters involved the leaks are not from our intel but elsewhere (I suspect the oppo firm, the senator, or MI6. You can choose to not believe him but I'd hope that means you wouldn't believe someone like assange as well.

I don't blame Trump for being sensitive about it because my take is no one legitimate is saying he did anything wrong or that the info is real. But people are insinuating that. Just like his supporters are insinuating things from the opposite direction. Both sides playing the game while reality suffers.

The Russians are doing a great job of playing our divisions and we are lapping it up.

if you think our intel really just googled putin and decided he is sort of bad, or called thundergerbil to find the origin of an ip addy and used that as proof it's russian then you might be a red neck (humor...sort of...bad but humor....maybe a few decades old but so are bell bottoms)

And I don't want them to disclose how they found out (the russians want them to) or when our next drone strike is. I agree with trump on the latter.

I don't hate the Russians. I don't trust Putin who is KGB. I also think they are laughing. They are using disinformation as a tool. You don't know what is real or not with them and they are dangerous.

Both of our parties do the same thing and folks lap it up. I don't find what the Russians are doing particularly unique and they have been doing it for a long time. Influencing elections is old hat for them.

I do find it odd that a large number of people place more faith in them than our on intelligence community (and I am dubious of them). While our intel agencies have had their miscues and bad politics where they do not belong, they are not in the same league as the KGB or the Putin government in that regard. To be honest having folks hold them equivelent or trust Putin more is disturbing.

While we do mental gyrations to support whichever side we support (or neither party just anti US establishment) I think we are suspending logic and reality at times.

And they know it.

Putin is the devil (he's not good, is KGB, and is not dumb)
you don't need proof (it is unrealistic to think I will get it real time and plays into Russian hands)
neither does anyone else (they are getting it, and those that are seem to be pretty much (not 100% that will never happen) on the same page
our intelligence communities are always right (not at all, IRAQ is a good example, to not place them in steed with the KGB does not suggest this)
Russia is always evil (see #1)
and you're not a liberal (this is true...it has to be...MACS says so and he knows more than our intel and the kgb combined..

Putin is, without a doubt, one of the least dangerous leaders on the planet... you want bad? Duerte, Gadaffi, Hosni Mbarak, Mugabe... these people are/were dangerous because they're insane...

Putin is smart... he's messing with the US because we've messed with him for so long... we as a nation have zero right to complain about foreign meddling...

Assuming Russia is truly behind the hacking - something which you believe because intelligence communities which have lied to you before are telling you is true - then what they did was the equivalent of trolling... and when someone gets trolled, it's not the trollers fault, it's the idiot who took the bait...

Back to the divestiture issue, Trump has a fiduciary duty to not disrupt operations. Outside his own interests many other companies have parallel interests. If Trump where to divest in such a way as to devalue his holdings it could very well devalue the holdings of others and open Trump to more lawsuits.

Stipulating those are bad actors. As is Putin who is more powerful and can do more.

Yes we've messed with him, and he's messed with us. When we mess with him he reacts, and vice versa. I do not apologize for our actions (I'll leave that to Obammy) and completely disagree that we have no right to complain about foreign meddling in our affairs. I guess I'm not a US apologist and don't think we should act out of weakness.

While I agree it's our fault if our security is breached and we need to strengthen it, that's not mutually exclusive and we need to accept another country taking advantage of it. There must be consequences. Perhaps measured, but consequences. To just concede and say it's ok would be a huge mistake.

Our intel has lied and/or made mistakes. I've repeatedly said I am dubious of them. But if you just decide whatever they do from now on has no merit or does not have the integrity on the level of the KGB then we are really in trouble. I just don't believe that.

That golden shower incident with drafter didn't happen?

I think the report to trump and obammy (whos folks could have leaked it too) was simply the Russians are floating they have a file on Trump and he needs to be aware of it. I don't think it's anything more than that at the moment and it seems reasonable. It should never have been leaked but most things shouldn't We praise it at times and curse it at times depending what's convenient.

Stop blaming U.S. Intelligence agency for Iraq. It was VP ****** Cheney and his buddies from his CIA days with a political agenda to go to war to "re-make" the Middle East into a pro-West pro-Israel region and to provide stability to the world's oil supply. His power, as former director, and connections forced the intel community to ignore all evidence collected by European (Italian, German, English and French) intel agencies of the lack of WMD, re-interpret documents and photos to falsely suggest the existence of WMD, outed a CIA operative/operation in Nigeria and an ambassador/intelligence ofcr because they went public with contrary evidence that Iraq did not acquire high grade plutonium.

The Iraq war didn't accomplish the objectives desired by the neo-cons but did much to de-stabilize the area and created vacuums of leadership that allowed the rise of Al Qaeda and ISIL. Cost us trillions of dollars and thousands of American lives, hundreds of thousands of killed and injured Arabs and displaced millions of Middle East natives.

I do blame the intel community as well though. It's not either or and politics won the day. Interestingly enough though many disparaging the intel community are the same people still claiming it was legit and WMDs existed because their family members and friends saw them!

I dunno that I agree completely....I don't wish ill will on Trump's companies, nor any other companies that do business with him....however, I think his duty to the office of President and to the entire country supercedes any fiduciary duty to those with a hand in his pocket.

You stole my speech Al.

I couldn't agree more. It baffles me to think that an organization staffed by highly educated people could ever believe there will ever be peace in the middle east. The Shiite and the Sunni Muslims are sworn enemies. It is expected that at a meeting of the two someone is gonna die. At least with strongmen like Hussein and Qaddafi there was a relative stability. Since both were deposed and killed there has been a power vacuum in Middle East. It is the fault of any President who was a party to this destabilization.

Except there were WMDs Al......just not the ones that were promised. I've seen first hand photos from family that got shelled with laced artillery. Biggest omission of that venture besides forgetting all the Democrats that lined up to vote presidential war powers.......but otherwise I agree with you.

Yep, they were left-overs scattered around apparently forgotten from the Iraq-Iran war more than ten years old when they were found, and mostly degraded. The mobile weapons lab turned out to be something innocuous. Nothing close to a weapon that could produce a mushroom cloud or labs/facilities designed to make such a weapon were found. The Iraqi informants/experts who said they existed were later proven to be paid frauds.

I was not in favor of going to war with Iraq at first, believing the intel that bin Laden, the real 9/11 terrorist, was in Afghanistan, until Colin Powell's presentation to the U.N. He seemed to be the straight shooting reluctant warrior who famously originally opposed the war and advised "you break it, you buy it." Cheney somehow convinced him to sell it and I bought it.

A top cybersecurity specialist and his deputy in Russia’s intelligence service, the FSB, are reportedly being accused by the Kremlin of “breaking their oath” by working with America’s Central Intelligence Agency.

Sergei Mikhailov, allegedly detained at a board meeting last December, and his deputy, Dmitry Dokuchaev, were arrested by the Kremlin on Jan. 27 for treason and illegal hacking. Then, on Tuesday, Russian news agency Interfax, after hearing from unidentified sources, reported that they, along with Ruslan Stoyanov, the head of cybercrime investigations at Kaspersky Labs, and a fourth, as yet unnamed person, are suspected of passing along secret information to the CIA — or of passing it to someone who passed it to the CIA. The Kremlin, for its part, has refuted such claims through spokesperson Dmitri Peskov, who said, “…we categorically deny any assertions about the possible complicity of the Russian side in any hacker attacks,” adding, “All the suspects have been charged with high treason. This is the sole count in the case. There are no other accusations.”

These are the latest in a series of developments regarding the FSB’s cybersecurity unit and Kaspersky Labs that has unfolded since the U.S. presidential election, colored as it was by the leaking of a dossier alleging the Russians had compromising information on Donald Trump (kompromat, if you will.) The idea is that the Russians could get Trump to do their bidding once he was elected. U.S. intelligence officials did summarize the dossier for Trump and President Barack Obama.

It is unclear if the people just arrested allegedly passed on the information in question directly, or worked with other individuals to do so (The Moscow Times has more on how the four allegedly worked together).

It is also unclear whether this is connected to the charges of illegal hacking levelled against Mikhailov — at least one source has said that the hacking is separate from the leaking of secret information.

What was that secret information? According to Novaya Gazeta, Mikhailov tipped off U.S. intelligence officials to “King Servers,” a computer server rental company run by Vladimir Fomenko. King Servers has been identified by an American cybersecurity researchers as helping Russia carry out cyber attacks.

On Jan. 13, three days after news of the dossier leaked, Kommersant reported that Andrei Gerasimov, head of the FSB’s Information Security Center since 20009, would be dismissed. The center was being investigated for its relationship with certain cyber companies, including Kaspersky Labs. Some speculated that the news was linked to the dossier. But the FSB security center dealt with internal, not external, cyber issues.

Unless, of course, somebody inside the FSB cyber center took it upon themselves to warn those outside of Russia what was going on within it. As Churchill said in a different context, Russia is a riddle wrapped in mystery wrapped in a terribly confusing story of leaks, showers, and spies.

in these troubled times, I find comfort in knowing that I can rely on Russia for the truth, like the rest of American right wingers.

I saw a less detailed report of these arrests in the Sat, 1/28 NY Times. The timing of the arrests, and the fact that the FSB (successor to the KGB) has very rarely publicized these personnel "purges", according to Moscow watchers, is very suspicious.

It looks like more than treason to me. In addition to accusing one of their top officials of leaking info to the U.S. or a British intelligence official (who reported the existence of the Trump dossier to several sources, including the FBI and US Intelligence, and who has now also disappeared), intentionally or negligently, they seem to be removing persons for incompetence. The Russians were embarrassed to have that hacking operation exposed, and dumped the persons in charge.

This could be interesting and bears watching. Trump's refugee detention program launch obscured this story. Wonder how the Senate investigation, the FBI's investigation and the CIA's investigation are proceeding?
