When Obama was elected, we didn't see prime time sit coms with special episodes to explore peoples "feelings" about Obama becoming president.

Black-ish is a half decent program that did just this in regards to Trump.
They dropped the humor and spoke seriously about Michelle Obama's feeling of hopelessness.

Suck it up, snowflakes.
It's an election.
Someone loses every time, though you'd never know that from the nonstop mewling.

I really like Blackish and had been considering posting about the show several times over the last few weeks.

As I watched tonight's episode, I kept thinking how easy it would be for many (here?) to dismiss it as liberal crap, but I think they, especially the star, actually were fair to the idea of opposition being respected. One needs to hang in long enough to tonight's episode to appreciate it.

It is normally a a very slick show with some great characters that live in the more realistic post-Cosby/Huxtable era of upper middle class black families who ar ealso part of the American fabric. If interested, I'd strongly suggest starting from the first show to better understand the characters...and watch out for Laurence Fishburn! He is spectacular.

I've liked many of Laurence Fishburns movies. I'd probably like this as well. But, as a rule I rarely what anything other than news and college football on the "networks."

Anth, there's no question Blackish has a strong lib bias, but it is realistic in today's America to portray a family like this one in that light.

However, they are able to transcend mere politics and are able to let the total of the family exceed the sum of the parts...or something like that. Characters are clearly individuals as opposed to typical network TV's token portrayal of black people...in my opinion. Though they do slip into comical satirical characterizations as needed for laughs.

Hey, I like it, you may yawn.

Carl, I may be wrong but I think it's called Black-ish because so much of this family has nothing to do with common opinion of American Black culture, as if one could almost substitute any American family made up of people aspiring to attain the best of what this country offers. For sure, they are Black, but they are also whitish, brownish, or any ish that participates in America positively, while maintaining some of their original culture and simply adding it into the melting pot as a gift, not as a demand to be addressed.

In last night's Trump episode, the main character passionately stresses his love for his country...even when his country doesn't always love him back...he still loves it.

His father (Fishburn) explains to the teenage son that Grandfather and father are angry black men, but the grandson is not and they hope he never becomes like them in his heart...because he really can make it in America.

Maybe it's me, but I get lots of positives every week from this show, and I laugh with it.

Absolutely it racist. There would be riots if Whiteish was a hit tv show.

I can't stand the double standard.

I don't watch it either but only because it didn't grab my interest. Haven't watched orange is the new black either but it has nothing to do with orange or black.

Cacaman I poke fun at you about your earlier statement, and will continue to, and know you don't care what I think, but for what it's worth I do not beleive you are a racist. The comment was just easy material. Folks judge too easily.

By the way, mork and mindy was a very white show and was filmed at altitude. Coincidence?

Kidding aside I could see a show called whiteish or something to the effect hitting the air and it could take a number of different paths.

It could be a serious drama or even intelligent comedy that depicts the growing fear of being marginalized, feeling unable to show our pride in our heritage without being labled a skin head, kkk or racist. It could also show how angst and uncomfortableness with certain politically correct postures could also be well thought out, based on life experiences, and not evil or ignorant at all. i probably don't do it justice but it is frustrating that one side of certain issues can be freely spoken about without getting castigated while the other side is supposed to sit down and shut up because of some perceived (or real) unfair privilege over hundreds of years that must be rectified. This part of our culture is toxic and people can justify absurd things by thinking they are on the right side and it's for the greater good. I actually think that is fertile ground for a very compelling show and you could give it a provocative title.

No one has exclusive rights to being 100% right, pure etc. We all would be better served trying to understand what others different than us think and why. We don't have to agree, but should listen and think, and not vilify. And that does not just mean the whites have to understand the various other races. It runs both ways. They do too. It's easy to see when the other guy isn't doing so, but you don't accomlish anything until you really look at what you are doing (as they should as well)

or it could be a skinhead show LOL

All forms of racism are bad. Wake me up when we no longer have an NAACP or a Congressional Black Caucus. As long as it is accepable to have blatant racial advocacy groups by definition we will have racial divisions. FWIW, the CBC would seem to be unconstitutional. It's it illegal for government to discriminate based on race?

I missed the beginning of the episode, but saw it though to the end.
I know what they were doing, and I thought they did a great job.

It's just sad that they felt the need to do it.
My concern is that this helps make the losers legitimize their misplace angst.

Whoa.

I think the show is great (by today's standards).
I watch very little non-sports television. This show is funny and witty and thought provoking and risque.
To dismiss it because of the title is narrow minded.

And to be honest, the double standard that you mention is a prominent feature of some episodes.

Tail I like this post and agree

Is it misplaced?. It seems like the winners are not exactly feeling euphoric. There is something wrong here and it needs to be fixed. Maybe time will do so but I fear the trajectory is going the wrong direction. We are separating rather than going towards. Both sides blame the other and they are right. Neither seems to put any blame on themselves and they are wrong.

I don't think all of the angst by anti obama folks is necessarily misplaced. While some of the actions, vitriol etc may be, the underlying angst is legitimate. There are very valid concerns, needs, etc. that are very often discounted summarily. The pendulum swung and now the other side gets a taste.

I honestly think everyone is unsatisfied and has very valid angst. And maybe I read too far in to your statement as well....

I just think we need to tone it down a notch and get constructive rather than playing the game (which I find destructive).... I know they (insert either side) did this or that. But I hope all sides find and embrace decency at some point.

yes I'm frustrated. I am very concerned by what I see.

true. good post

It may have been good that you missed the beginning, you may have shut it off. I was initially convinced the show was going to be a funeral dirge for liberal America with self pity by libs and preachy lefty warnings...and here I am, a Liberal!

But the two older children, who are even more integrated into a color blind society than their upwardly mobile professional parents, take the lead and allow the fair play to develop...and I loooved Dre's passionate bit about loving America. I actually applauded (Caren thought it was something she did).

Clever moves having the conservative boss dislike Trump, and the "white liberal woman" vote for Trump...some stuff said by her to Wanda needed to be said to all Liberals.

Just saw this:

ABC's "black-ish" tackled the results of the presidential election in their mid-season premiere Wednesday night.

The most-heated part of the episode, titled "Lemons," takes place during a conversation set at Anthony Anderson's character Andre's advertising agency.

Lucy, played by Catherine Reitman, who is white, reveals she voted for Trump and chaos breaks loose.

"Can someone explain how 53 percent of white women voted for the orange p---y grabber?" Wanda Sykes' character Daphne asks. "Lucy, I mean, as a resident white woman, if there was ever a cue for you to talk, it would be now."

She adds, "Fine, as long as she knows that a vote for Trump is a vote for racism."

Lucy fires back, "You guys just said that you would've voted for anyone who was black, but what if instead of Obama, it was Clarence Thomas or Herman Cain or Ben Carson?"

They respond with a resounding no and Anderson's character Andre poses, "Is Ben Carson even black?"

The conversation turns back to Trump and Lucy explains that despite not thinking "Trump is a great guy," she couldn't support Hillary Clinton.

"No, he is the devil, and I should know," Peter Mackenzie's character Mr. Stevens adds.

Mr. Stevens' son Connor chimes in, "I mean, I know we don’t like to think of it that way, but America is a corporation, OK? It’s the world’s biggest and most important corporation. So is it so crazy to think that maybe a businessman, who runs big corporations, might not be such a bad idea?"

Daphne responds, "He runs them into the ground. That idiot goes bankrupt like Khloé Kardashian changes black dudes."

The episode concludes on a more positive note with Anderson's character noting, "Over 50 million people [voted for Trump and] felt something... and I don't think it's possible that ...all of them were nuts, or racist, or hated women," he said. "It's time that we stop calling each other names."
