Humidor can't keep it's level

I have a 70 count humidor that passed the dollar test on all sides. with a humipak of rechargeable beads that's good for 25 cigars.

I have only 10 cigars in it at the moment.

It was staying at around 70% since I received it. No in winter I am having trouble keeping it there.
It dropped to 50% and I couldn't get it to raise back up. Even with emptying the cigars out and placing a cup of distilled water in it.

I re-seasoned the cedar with distilled water and also put the shot glass of distilled water in it yesterday early evening. It read at 80%. This morning I checked it and it was at mid 60's.

Any thoughts, suggestions or ideas how I can get this on track again? I have bought a few 5 packs and such and I'm waiting for them to come in. I need to get it sorted before they arrive.

*EDIT it as an analog hygrometer. I used a calibration bag purchased with the humidor according to directions to adjust its accuracy. Will definitely look into a digital though.

Thanks in advance.

Mid 60s is perfect. Put a bigger 65% boveda in it. Cigars smoke like a wet rag at 70%

My guess is you have an analogue hydrometer.

Those things are trash, get a digital one... you're probably sitting at 85%.

Just use a65 boveda or hf beads. No hygrometer needed. When the beads get white spritz, or recharge boveda when crystaly

Every time you open a desktop humi, the air instantly goes to whatever the ambient humidity is. No getting around that. You mitigate it by filling it with cigars and keeping it shut. If your humidity pack is dry, replace it. If it isn't, don't worry.

FIFY

You'll need a large ziploc bag, a smaller ziploc snack bag with a new clean kitchen sponge soaked with distilled water. Place the smaller ziploc bag in the larger bag and toss boveda packs in the larger ziploc bag to recharge them.

Since I started using a cooler with beads and Boveda packs I've never had to worry about the humidity. Works great!

Don't listen to this guy!....... and watch out - he'll pull more than your leg. Only use a fresh kielbasa sausage. It will release humidity slowly and will add a unique flavor to your cigars.

Or seriously, just do the easy thing and go boveda route.

best bet is to keep the humidor as close to capacity as possible

if you keep having problems, buy this: http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/581929/Ziploc-Weathertight-Storage-Box-16-Quart/?cm_mmc=PLA-_-Google-_-Storage-_-581929-VQ6-137815592578-VQ16-c-VQ17-pla-VQ18-online-VQ19-581929-VQ20-257037103603-VQ21--VQ22-658419993-VQ27-35000414818&adpos=1o1&creative=137815592578&device=c&matchtype=&network=g&gclid=CNC8vo-xztECFYSKswodTqEIfA

wash with unscented soap and distilled water

they are unrivaled (imo) as far as tupperdors go

a single boveda will maintain 66% for >>>6months

its dummy proof (trust me)

you can never have enough storage. curious, do you toss in any form of cedar with the cigars or just let the cigars rest all by themselves?

.
Sterilite-dor (plastic tub with handles that swing upward to lock the lid on). Cheap, huge, transparent (read your gauge, and admire your stash, anytime without opening it), stackable, holds humidity far, FAR better than wood humidors do (very rare to have to refill the humidifying devices inside). 116-quarts (29 gallons!) units for around $17 at Home Depot. Do you like wood's scent and humidity-regulating effects? Throw some of it in the Sterilite, then.

You'll never go back to wood-walled traditional humidors (unless you get bitten by "the style bug" and want to look classy while spending WAY too much money per cubic foot of space and having to endure WAY too much maintenance and interventions).

Same here, but with the transparent Sterilite tubs (not a cooler), gel jars (not beads) and the Bovedas. Works great that way too!

Hydrometers measure specific gravity. Hygrometers, on the other hand, measure relative humidity.

There's plenty of cedar in the boxes. Just buy whole boxes...

I usually toss a few boxes in as someone else recommended. Another option is a cedar tray or two.
