I get a lot of second looks when I mention Kock's Liquor...…...but it's a real place founded by a man,Mr Kocks believe it or not, in the 70's.I'm good friends with his grandson,Brendan, who now runs the shpo....and yes he does protect me.

Generally not a fan of Guinness but there’s been a 6-pack sitting in the garage refridge for months so thought I’d revisit.

Michael - tell me you’re kidding. Or that someone gave you a 6-pack. Or that you stuffed those 5 bottles down your pants when no one was looking. Gonz

I have a hate/hate thing going with that style. It's not a style, it's bad beer. I've home brewed. I've made sours, but not on purpose. I honestly believe, one of the big micro-breweries got an infected batch and went "Crap! We can't just dump all this! What are we going to do?!"

And some hippy said, "Let's call it a sour and tell people it's hip!"

Voila'. A style is born. ThumbDown

Aren't sours basically emulating Belgian Lambic?

Frank, to be honest I'm not a sour fan and have never tried any of their sour offerings. I do know that some brewing org recently name Trim Tab one of the top ten breweries in the nation. I don't know if that was for brewpubs, micro breweries or what. They also have been named B'hams top brewery for the last three or four years. Their stouts are good but where they excel is with their Light Visions Collection of 10 small batch hazy and New England IPA offerings. This probably does not help but what are friends for?

it's pretty cool actually.
In this amazing golden age of beer, almost everyone has a highly regarded brewery or three close to home.

In recent years B'ham has taken off in the beer and food scene. A lot of good things happening in those arenas.

Kind of. I think. Those have a definitive fruit signature though. Sours just hit me as, how do I say it, infected. As a brewer that's how they hit my palate. I really just don't get them. But it's like cigars, palates vary. To each their own. Beer
