"VILLIGER SAN’DORO COLORADO ROBUSTO" #21 on CA's 2016 list.

Was gifted this very nice looking stick from a lobbyist who gets them from some tobacco guys. Let it rest in the humi for a while and fired it up. I had never tried a Villiger before and didn't even know it was on the CA list when I started smoking it.

The good: Perfectly constructed, easy to cut and light. Perfect burn and draw the whole time. Had a rock solid 1.5 inch ash still on it when i bumped my arm and knocked it off.

The taste.....meh. I mean there was nothing there. This should be right in my wheelhouse, Nicaraguan innards with a Ecuadorian wrapper. But there was zero to talk about. No spice, no earth, no wood, no savory-ness, no aroma, not even really any noticeable tobacco flavor, no strength, no complexity. Nothing. Nada. Cardboard. Not offensive in anyway mind you. It never tasted horrible, just a waste of time it seemed.

I about tossed it out halfway through when I looked it up and saw it was on the CA list at 21 and rated 92! I figured i MUST be missing something so kept giving it a chance. Nope, stayed the same. At least it was consistant.

Perhaps I was unlucky and this was just a bad one, but there is no way the one I had was the 21st best cigar I have had in the past couple weeks let alone #21 overall in the world for 2016. Maybe they just looked at it and saw how pretty it is...

Your palate must be ruined.
Any cigar in the CA top 25 must be a flavor bomb, cause those guys at CA are so smaht.................................and stuff.

Advertising dollars is a major factor in CA ratings ... in any event, however, why be concerned about the opinion of others, irrespective of who it is and how they arrived at their opinion ... it IS, after all, THEIR opinion and has no bearing whatsoever on what YOUR opinion might be ... my take is that if YOU like it, smoke it and if not, let others do so ...
.
One of my longtime favorite stores in San Francisco (now sadly gone) used to display ratings prominently in their walk-in, but ceased doing so for the very reasons I cite ... the opinion of CA, your brother-in-law, your next door neighbor or myself has nothing in the world to do with how YOU will perceive any particular cigar ... your palate should be your one and only guide ...

I think most people think they want a great cigar which in their minds is consistent, non-turbulant, and fairly mild. CA gives people that. I think it's one of those "These 25 didn't rock the boat kind of things."

But then I remembered they selected the Don Tomas Maduro about a decade ago and the gurkha 125th too so that idea might be thrown out the window.

I was much earlier in my cigar noobness and saw a box of Gurkha 125th cigars at a b&m. I knew CA had just rated the cigar on their top 25. I picked up the box opened the lid and took a big whiff, my nose was expecting amazing rich smells of sweet tobacco like when opening a humidor but what it got instead was all the chemical varnish smells from the box exterior.

I sat the box back down and haven't given CA's ratings much regard since. About the only thing the CA rating really does is drive up prices on top 25 cigars here at cbid. ram27bat

I've learned two things...

99cobra's name is Anthony
Midmofan must be really old to remember My Little Margie (starring Gale Storm...a redundant name if ever there was one).
