Watched it on National Geographic this evening.

First 10 minutes... I heard this: "Lincoln joined the new, anti-slavery party... the Republicans."

Sure you did. And you also knew that the Republican party was against slavery. It's just most liberals who seem to have forgotten, or overlooked that fact.

The Republican Party, founded in 1854, in the time of Lincoln, was the liberal and progressive party. It was the main party of the northern states and its primary platform was to oppose and end slavery in the southern states. Theodore Roosevelt's abandonment of the party when he ran for re-election in 1912 as a Progressive in support of small business, caused the shift of the GOP to the modern platform of big business and conservatism.

The Democratic Party, founded in 1828 by Andrew Jackson, were originally slave owners, conservatives and populists, and were dominant in the southern states. During the party realignment in 1912, the Democrats switched its platform to progressive liberalism.

So the Republican Party acted like today's Democrats before it became the Democrats and after the slaves were freed. Democrats were slave owners and became Republicans when the GOP switched platforms.

Kinda like both parties had a sex change operation at the same time...

Lincoln... lol wierd guy. He wanted to take all the freed slaves and send them back to Liberia because according to him, "whites and blacks could not live peacefully together in a free society."

With marfans and a voice like a bird apparently.

My guess is if this forum existed in its current form and makeup back then he would have been hated in here based on his states rights stance alone.

The rhetoric and hatred might even have lead to him getting shot and stuff.

That's right. I blame cbid for the death of Lincoln. You bassard.

Yeah....this ironically gets over-looked almost routinely. But don't forget, the entire war was based on and history today still tells us it was ALL ABOUT ENDING SLAVERY....that's it.....that's why it was started, nothing else....just freeing the slaves. Got it?????

When I moved to this area I didn't know anyone and killed time learning the history of the area. I had no idea it was in many ways the center of the start of the civil war. Bleeding Kansas is an excellent book on the subject.

This one.

https://www.amazon.com/Bleeding-Kansas-Contested-Liberty-Civil/dp/0700614923

It's particularly interesting to me because all of the towns are in close proximity to me and I visited them while reading the book.

There are a couple similar titles I can't vouch for. I picked my copy up at a little book store near where John brown fired up the towns folks against cantrails raiders etc. funny think about the trustworthiness of the press it's nothing new. We still don't know what the "sacking of Lawrence" really entailed.

Just looked at my copy. The last hundred pages or so are footnotes/source citations. Well researched book.

I agree with this review on amazon

"Professor Etcheson's book is a thorough, objective view of "Bleeding Kansas," the years leading up to the Civil War (1854 to 1861.) She makes the politics of the time as interesting as the armed combat between the (Kansas/New England) Abolitionist and the (Missouri/Southern) Border Ruffian. Etcheson also looks at all points of view with a frank and honest eye, not lionizing the anti-slavery faction or villainizing the pro-slavery faction.

It is by far the most up-to-date and historically accurate book on this important era. A must-read for the Civil War buff and for those in Kansas and Missouri to understand the integral part the region played in setting the stage for the War Between the States."

You don't have to. The Democrats and Republicans switched sides in the 1912 Party Realignment. You would have been a Democrat before then, and prolly would've despised vampire hunters...you're safe now...

It was said that he asked for it to be played as the lead-in for his address at Gettysburg.

His death was probably the worst thing for any hope of reconciliation with the north. Lincoln wanted to reconcile with the south but the republican congress and U.S.. Grant who later became president only wanted to punish the south for the war.
