It looks like we're headed back to visit the folks @ Mombacho Cigars in Granada, Nic. just in time for their annual Thank You Party they throw for all their employees for the years hard work!!! Should be a blast, although considerably warmer as we're going end of April first part of May....vs February last time.
I never imagined I'd have the opportunity to go there ONCE in my lifetime let alone for a third time....And frankly wouldn't be if it weren't for the heartfelt generosity of my BIL / SIL supplying airline miles for my flight. Can't wait to go back, the people have been warm and friendly each time we've gone, perhaps we'll get to travel to the top of Mombacho Volcano this time where they grow coffe etc. ( road was closed for construction last time ) We fly into Managua then an 1.5 hr. drive to Grenada, passing active volcano' as we cruise....( beautiful place ) fog

Very nice. I hope to someday be lucky enough to go.

I have a question do you speak much Spanish? Is there a language barrier problem not so much at the cigar factory but more so in the travels around Granada, at the hotel or local restaurants?

Anthony,

No I do not speak Spanish and had I known I'd be traveling there no less than three times in my lifetime I'd have definitely learned some as I think it shows respect to the host country. The owners / blenders etc. of Mombacho are well versed in Spanish / English and do a wonderful job of playing interpreter while were there...as they are typically with us on most of our travels.
The last time we went they ( Mambacho folks ) had hired a wonderful young lady ( and gorgeous ) named Isabella who went everywhere with us and acted as our interpreter. Granada is totally different from Estelli...much prettier and alot of history there. Highly recommended if you get the opportunity!!!!

The last time we went my BIL and I arrived a day earlier than everyone and decided to take a taxi to drop us off/ pick us up in 3-4 hrs. to do some sight seeing....for the same $$ he offered to " stay with us " and be our guide. He was a helluva nice guy who allowed us to buy him lunch and (1) cerveza (his call not ours) and the three of us sat and chatted and got to know a bit about one another, it WAS a great afternoon!!

Paul,

That sounds like an amazing journey and I can see why you've gone there twice already. Enjoy the heck out of it. I look forward to reading your post about the trip when you get back.

My wife and I always wanted to see Europe but with the recent events I just don't feel like it's a safe place to travel to, I used to think that about Central America but now I think it might be the safer choice.

Thanks for the reply!! I'm off to google more about mombacho cigars and Granada.

Anthony

Have a great time, Paul.
You should take a few of your masterpiece ash trays down and barter for cigars.

Paul unless you booze is in the small bottles like they have on the plane most airlines won't allow a large bottle of booze on the flight. Not sure if you'd qualify to buy at the duty free shop in airports, but hate for you to loose good booze to the TSA. Google their rules to be sure.

Have a fun trip!

Hello Ken, How nice to see ya posting my friend!!! IIRC one of my BIL's took a 750ML bottle last year so we'd have a bottle in our roomfor " after hours " . Can a person buy those airline minis by the case? I could hand them out after we arrive..... lol Hope to see ya sometime soon in Marion.

My wife and I were in Paris in 2015 during the attacks. We were sitting in a restaurant enjoying a bottle of wine about a mile away from the epicenter, as a matter of fact, when they went down. However, you can be in the wrong place at the wrong time just about anywhere and so we continue with our travel plans.

Incidentally, my avatar is a photo from the trip. We were walking down a street trying to find the Casa del Habano when I saw two gentlemen leaning against a doorway smoking cigars. I approached them and mimed cigar smoking while asking and pointing "Casa del Habano? Casa del Habano?" One replied in American English "I'm sorry, what?" and I said "Oh you're American! I'm just trying to find the Casa del Habano so I can buy some Cubans." The guy said, "Well, I don't know where it is but we bought five of these and we have an extra so here you go." He then handed me a Cuban Punch tubo. This still is one of my favorite memories of that trip. What a nice thing to do.

I'm about to light it in the photo and my wife is holding a Bolivar, I believe.

So we're ( wifey and me ) gonna head up to Michigan on Thursday for us ( the BIL's ) to fly out on Sat. to Nicaragua.....

BUT Thursday ( running all day ) is a CALDWELL Event, @ 4PM and running the balance of the day Tony Bellatto and Michael Perales will be there signing boxes etc. and meeting people. IIRC there will be BBQ etc. available as well.
I intend to go and wondered if any of the Michigan brotherhood was considering going? It's a nice shop with a nice walk in humi and a great group of regulars and Kevin and Sharon run a great shop.

Trip was awesome....great weather albeit " hotter than a fresh F'ked Fox in a forest fire " This factory and it's owners / master blender Claudio...is really like No Other!! They employ a lovely woman ( Lilly ) who's ONLY job is to cook lunch for the entire staff every day of the week. On their higher end cigars, if one comes out of the press with a bump or rough edge it gets sanded down with a micron paper....ALL cigars get wiped down with a combo of banana vinegar and distilled water to " clean " the cigar from all the handling and for any foreign matter present.

We were fortunate to have tried two cigars of three ( broadleaf to be ready soon ) a new line coming out of Casa Favilli called Patina, a line that their new national sales manager Mo Maali owns, we smoked the connie and habano blends @ dinner one night ( actually preferred the connie ) as it is like no connie I'd smoked to date. PP is to be in the 8-9 dolla range IIRC.
Also we had the opportunity to smoke a new blend that Claudio did for the owner of the oldest cigar maker in Italy after dinner on our last night...it was a really solid little cigar!!!! All in all another bucket list trip Fo Sho!! And to put icing on the cake for my friend and shpo owner Kevin, he will be the very 1st " Mombacho Cigar Lounge " in the US!!
Kevin also ordered (10 ) boxes of each vitola in the Patina line if anyone's interested in how to get some....PM me.
