If you just use your tv to watch tv... a simple tv will do, right?

I have never had a smart tv, so I don't know.

If you have Netflix or like to watch YouTube videos, use network apps etc.a smart tv is convenient because you don't need an external interface. I have one in the cave. I would buy another.

Do not buy a smart TV. Buy a $200-400 cheaper dumb TV and them plug in any number of $50-100 smart TV appliances into it. Roku, apple TV, Fire TV, etc. Most smart TVs don't receive security updates ( which are essential for any Internet connected device) within just a year or two of release. Then often times they fall out of support of mainline streaming services, rendering the smart bit a useless hunk.

Most TV's you expect to last 5-10 years, but those 1-2 year guaranteed updates make smart TVs a non-starter for me. With one of the little plugin doohickeys, it goes out of support you toss it and plug another one that is supported in.

I just replaced a tv that was about 8 years old.

I rarely watch tv in the living room, so I was going the cheap route. I bought one of the cheapest 55 inch tvs I could find. Somewhere around $300.

It's so much better than what I had.

I just can't spend a ton of cash on a tv. Other things, yes, but not a tv.

Some day they're gonna put real stores in MS...like the ones here up north where you can go into them and look at the difference between tv's....hope that happens soon for you, Ray.

I've got a 70" LG, going on about 4 years old....primary seating is about 7 or 8 feet away. It is not blurry...I have no clue what the resolution is....I do know that it is not 4K, nor ultra....I was truly blown away by the higher end tv's in the stores nowadays....and tho I'm not the least bit of an AV techie aficionado...I could tell a huge difference. When I bought mine, the difference was about $3K between mine and the one that the cool kids were gettin....too rich for my blood...no clue what any of them go for today

That said, I have NEVER, ever watched my tv and thought..."Gee...I wish this was an ULTRA or 4K...(or whatever the new great thing in TV's is)"....it's kinda like bluray; I can tell the sight/sound difference from a bluray dvd....but if I'm watching a regular dvd, it never occurs to me to think "I sure woulda preferred if this was bluray"...I just don't care enough.

As to the smart/not smart; my main tv is dumb; the sound/dvd system is smart. Works perfect for us.

One of the smaller tv's is smarter - and I like not having to use the peripheral type gear when I don't want to....it sorta goes both ways.

The tv that is in the 'exercise room' is very smart -- and perfect there -- I'm not looking for better sound system or dvd's or anything else...but the tv alone will stream Netflix and Amazon as well or better than that stuff clckbang mentioned...never had a problem with firmware not updating

4K is nice, but expensive and as TG pointed out some time ago, if you sit back very far, (normal viewing) you cannot see the extra details anyway.

Make sure the content you intend to watch is available in resolution you are paying for. Content labeled, "High Definition" is not necessarily 4k resolution. I found this out with Blueray DVDs, many titles were just ported over from lower resolution masters. YMMV

I've got a Samsung 60' SmartTV...with 3D and love it.

Had it for over 5 years now. No problems except with the internet we had at the time. Our TV was telling us that the internet connection wasn't good enough for the TV...it wasn't. We upgraded as soon as we were able to. It's the price of living out in the middle of nowhere. No FIOS, no cable modems...just DSL.

Meh...

Didn't buy the TV for the 3D...it came with it...it blew away the other TV's it was near in the showroom. Bought it, and when we bought a few 3D titles...whoa...it's amazing. I saw "How To Train Your Dragon" in the theaters, and at home the 3D effects were sharper and the picture much better.

I'm pleased with the purchase and if I'm in stores I'll look for my TV...it's only gone down in price like 400.00 so I feel like I bought a really good one!

Oh...almost forgot...if you like to play video games...WHOA! It's so awesome.

I've got a 52" Sharp Aquos in the living room and a 37" Vizio in the man cave. Neither smart, but I just watch TV on them... and won't be replacing them until they don't work.
