Anyone ever done this?

I'm taking my son this weekend to give it a try. We are using an outfitting service in N Sip.

The guide said that we will use knives but are welcome to carry a sidearm.

I can't wait.

Anyone share any tips or items we need to make sure we bring?

Pics to come, I hope.

I know some Dudes around here that use hunting puppy-dogs... they just catch the hogs tho... take them home and feed them corn for 30 days before hacking them up... Mellow

You're going to kill a wild hog with a knife? Frying pan

The ones with tusks that can rip you a new one?

Correct Macs.

You can see lots of videos on YouTube.

The catch dogs hold the pigs head. The guide grabs the hind legs....the the Hunter stabs him with a knife.

I've never done it, but I'm told it's sorta safe.

I've been warned if the golden child, Ocho, gets harmed I'll be the one being skinned out.

Yes Frank, since you have to jump from a tree on the the hog in order to slit it's throat, it's about as kosher as a hog can get. Just don't forget to say the prayers.

Enjoy Mattie, that's some real man chit bro. Not a lot of folks these days have got the guts to do it the old way.

When dog hunting we use duct tape to secure their legs and snout.Got a buddy with an old cotton rick we turn them out in til we're ready to kill them, usually just til the weather turns cool.It is important to be careful but there are so many myths about wild hogs it's laughable when I hear them."I was charged by a pig"........yea it happens but their eyesight is so poor they are usually just trying to flee danger.I have slipped up on hogs eating and shot them at point blank range...........they make a lot of noise and again their weakness is eyesight.I have been in that cotton rick with as many as a half dozen live pigs, boars included, and have never been cut by their "razor sharp tusk".Now I did have one boar I shot get up on his hind legs as I approached and he did try to hurt me..........but we're talking 300+ lbs of nothing but mean and pissed off with a 117 grains of lead in his shoulder. One through the head ended his rage.........but seriously a hurt animal will lash out at anything that approaches.

The knife method your outfitter speaks of is just for your thrill.......one to three dogs will be holding a pig while you slip up and either cut its throat or slide the blade between its ribs.As long as the dogs are well trained I would say it's safe.I have only done this with dogs I have hunt with previously..........unknown dogs that's your call. You'll know after you see the first catch whether to trust them or not.A good hog dog latched onto a pig will never let go........they'll hold, even gravely injured themselves, until they bleed out under most circumstances.

Have a great time and let us know how it plays out.

I have some buddies that do it, but with guns.
I did see some vids, and the "knife" is pretty much a dang sword!

A friend of mine has some hog dogs. Basically you turn the curs out to bay a hog. Once bayed you turn a pit bull loose to capture it. Once the pit bull has him down you run in and cut through it throats to sever the jugular vein.

The dogs wear Kevlar vests. Every now and then a hog catches one just right. So you carry a cut bag incase you have to do a little field surgery to keep the dog from bleeding out.

Wear heavy pants, leather boots and protect the crotch area. If one hooks your femoral artery you won't make it out alive. Also make sure the knife you use has a strong spine and is razor sharp. I use a US Army Kabar with a 7 1/2" blade. Though I'm pretty good putting an edge on a knife, I have it professionally razor sharpened before every hunt.

It's one hell of adrenaline rush and certainly not for the faint of heart. Did I say it's legal crack? Be careful, don't do anything stupid and have fun.

You don't use dogs for those hogs. Simply fill your pockets with corn kernels and leave a trail they eat to find you.

Easy Peasy.

For the benefit of the forum....

I was not alive in the 50's or 60's.

As for the book/movie. I would have definitely been a bigun in Jacks camp. Perhaps I would have been Maurice.

I choose that character because I'm also a Steve Miller Band fan.

I wouldn't mind doing this, but I'd like to do it with a pig spear.

Be safe and have fun Mattie, I've heard horror stories but never any based on stuff that actually happened. I'd agree with Ron here.

Texas has a feral hog problem.

The state's agriculture commissioner said Tuesday that he has a solution: a human blood-thinner that proves especially deadly in swine.

Sid Miller, the commissioner, said there is only a “minimal” threat to other animals. Hunters will be able to see that the substance was consumed because the fat will be bright blue, MyStatesman.com reported.

“They’re so prolific, you can’t hardly keep them in check,” Miller told the paper. “This is going to be the hog apocalypse, if you like: If you want them gone, this will get them gone.”

The paper reported that the pesticide used is called “Kaput Feral Hog Lure,” which will be bait laced with warfarin—the human blood thinner.

State officials have downplayed the threat to other wildlife. But some hunters disagree, and say poison is not a viable option. Hunters in the state have collected more than 12,000 signatures in opposition of the poison.

The report said that Louisiana is considering the poison, but one state wildlife official warned that the crumbs that a hog leaves behind could affect black bears and other animals.

These feral hogs cost the state’s agriculture industry about $50 million a year in damage. The Austin Statesman reported that these hogs were introduced to North America by Spanish settlers who released domestic pigs into the woods to breed.

The state already allows aerial hunting which reportedly results in about 27,000 killed hogs annually.

“We don’t think poison is the way to go,” Eydin Hansen, the vice president of the Texas Hog Hunters Association, told CBSNews.com. He went on to say, “If a hog is poisoned, do I want to feed it to my family? I can tell you, I don’t.”He also mentioned the risks of another animal—like a coyote—eating a dead carcass. “We’re gonna after possible the whole ecosystem.”

Well very long story short, we got screwed.

No hogs. No hog sign anywhere. We walked about 7 miles and saw nothing.

The stink of it is, this guy says he runs a Christian Guide service. I can't help but believe he knew he was suckering folks.
I explained that if I offered deer hunts for money, I wouldn't take them where there are no deer tracks, rubs or scrapes.

I let him know how disappointing the trip was. I asked that he not post any pictures of me and my son, because I don't want to be affiliated with his operation.

He then told me I was racist. And hung up on me.

Oh well. Lesson learned. I just hate it for Ocho who wanted this for his 14th birthday present.
