Over the years There have been hundreds of truly great rock and roll songs but I keep going back to "Gimme Shelter" as the greatest ever. Mick showed his genius by having Merry Clayton join him on the vocals Her shrieking "Rape, murder it's just a shot away" launches the cut into the stratosphere
What's your pick as best r&r song ever?

I agree, my # 1's change with my mood, time of day, people I'm with, and many other criteria
a song I generally say is my favorite every time I hear it is Pink Floyd-Shine on You Crazy Diamond.......not a real "rocking out song", but I really like it.......I just settle back and listen........takes me to another level, I don't even need the chemical assistance anymore Herfing Beer Applause

Whole Lotta Rosie - AC/DC
Gimme Shelter - Stones
Whole Lotta Love - Led Zeppelin

Don't....case might be made for last two....first four not worthy of this discussion....besides; the thread title is singular

Well I doubt my #1 will be on most peoples' list but as a young kid when it came out Nirvana Smells Like Teen Spirit hit a nerve in me like no other song.

I would say the greatest rock song of all time is Led Zeppelin Kashmir though

I'd argue that Whole Lotta Rosie could absolutely be in the discussion.
From the blues riff, to the fun lyrics and the sheer intensity as the song blasts you out of your seat only to gain even further momentum as the song goes on.
If your heart ain't racing by the songs climax then you just don't like Rock and Roll.

With that said, it's not on my personal list.
I just thought it was silly to dismiss it and claim it unworthy.

I recall when I was small, how I spent my days alone.
I would climb the garden wall, with a candle in my hand,
I'd hide inside a hall of rock and sand.

Boo hoo!

Music is a different (but a similar) hobby than cigars. Yes, I DO realize which forum I am in.

Ironically, I was 12 years old when I asked my older brother this same exact question over 30+ years ago. His answer was "Either Gimme Shelter or Comfortably Numb - you pick".

I never heard Gimme Shelter but I CAN say I get the same enjoyment now than when discovered that song for the first time.

Someone mentioned "mood". As I have learned, mood has a LOT to do with music (and everything else) that you enjoy at any given moment.

My take is the best rock and roll song is the one you have not heard yet. For every song posted there are hundreds of others that you have never heard.

Discovering those from days long past can give you the "best rock and roll song ever.......tonight".

Everyone may have a "go to" (and I can say Gimme Shelter is a STRONG go to for me!) but life is always changing.

All I can do is..."encourage enjoyment" for all!

That'll Be the Day - Buddy Holly

Say what you will but I would strongly contend that this song and his overall influence is w-a-y greater than anything before or since.

Kick Out the Jams - MC5

20th Century Boy - TRex

Trash - New York Dolls

Might seem like a weird choice but I'd have to stick "Spirit in the Sky" Norman Greenbaum in there, too.

Live at Monterrey version of "Like a Rolling Stone" - Hendrix. Watch the video....the joy he exhibits and the absolute mastery of his instrument is astonishing

Born on the Bayou - CCR

Not gonna argue but I would include "Rumble" - Link Wray. It got banned for being too violent. It's an instrumental. Link pretty much invented the fuzz toned power chords that are common place today.

Had to refresh my memory on this one. But you're right, in the pantheon of r 'n r, this song did lay huge groundwork for those that followed.

Unfortunately, that's how it is today, very few look at the roots of something, mostly only what they know in their lifetime.

I'll go along with Kashmir, but Hotel Cal... is great and what about Baba O'Reilly, behind Blue Eyes and Won't get fooled again by the Who.
Favorite Christmas song is Mistress for Christmas by AC/DC..

Have you heard about the boom on Mizar Five
People got to shout to stay alive
They don't even have policeman one
Doesn't matter where you been or what you've done
Do you have a dark spot on your past
Leave it to my man he'll fix it fast
Pepe has a scar from ear to ear
He will make your mug shots disappear

Ooh
Ooh
Ooh

Well, she's all geared up, walkin' down the street
And I can feel the slime, drippin' down her sleeve
Well, you can't refuse and you just can't choose what she's gonna do
Well, you can't refuse and you just can't choose what she's gonna do

Ooh
Ooh

Well, it's late at night, and I'm all alone
And I can hear her boots as she's near her home
Well, you can't refuse and you just can't choose what she's gonna do
Well, you can't refuse and you just can't choose what she's gonna do

Scratch, scratch, she's clawing at the door
Whoa, no, I can't take it anymore
Crack, crack I'm feeling so sore
I never should asked for black leather
Black leather
Ooh, black leather
Ow black leather

And you can try to hide, but you won't get far
You can let her in, and you'll start it again
Well, you can't refuse and you just can't choose what she's gonna do
Well, you can't refuse and you just can't choose what she's gonna do

Scratch, scratch, she's clawing at the door
Whoa, no, I can't take it anymore
Crack, crack I'm feeling so sore
I never should asked for black leather
Black leather
Ooh, black leather
Ow black leather

Ooh

FWIW, I'm not sure there is a greatest all time song. Way too many great songs to rank one above the other.

A list seems more appropriate. To it, I would add numerous songs by Pink Floyd, the Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana, The Doors, Aerosmith, Little Richard, Styx, Lynryd Skynrd, Cream, The Band, BTO, Iron Maiden, Ozzy & Black Sabbath, Bob Seeger, Led Zepplin, Queen, GNR, the Eagles, Steppenwolf, Kansas, The Beatles, Journey, Metallica, Rush, The Who, Buddy Holley, The Kinks, Kiss, Boston. Did I leave anyone out?
